Title: 500 Valve Spring Seats
Post by: philward on February 27, 2021, 09:53:28 PM: Just looking through CMSL 500 parts schematics in prep for fitting head (checking to make sure I fit all the right o'rings/etc) and noticed that there is an inner & outer spring seat (12 & 13 in the attached parts list).
I only took out and refitted 1 seat per valve (all the same size) - is this right? If there is an inner & outer, does the one size I've missed normally/likely to stick to the head (oil holding it to head)

Hope I don't have to take the valves out of the head again to check as I struggled with my rather large valve spring compressor!

Post by: Nurse Julie on February 27, 2021, 10:03:05 PM: They usually stick to the head, or the valve spring and then fall on the floor 🤣 🤣 🤣. But yes, there are 2 Phil. They are to stop the spring cutting into the valve guides.

Post by: philward on February 27, 2021, 10:59:31 PM: Had to go and check (much to the annoyance of Gillian!) - it was the inner spring seats I took out and replaced when re-assembling, the outer spring seats were still stuck to the head on the first 4 I've checked thank goodness!

Post by: philward on February 27, 2021, 11:15:59 PM: And one last pre fitting head question. Can't tell from parts diagram as to whether o ring on cam chain adjuster stud goes inside head or externally under washer for lock nut? I think it's externally but worth a check.

Post by: Bryanj on February 28, 2021, 12:39:49 AM: There is a groove on outside that O ring goes in, then plain washer then nut. The top retaining bolt should have a soft alloy washer on it to seal.
As too your spring seats the small one tends to stick on the guide with oil, the big one round the guide to head for same reason, if you have cleaned the head in a parts washer the oil "sticktion" can be removed and they fall out

Post by: philward on February 28, 2021, 08:59:09 AM: Thanks Bryan, cleaned the whole engine manually (it really was squeaky clean - almost like new) so luckily all the inner (which I took out) and outer seats I checked last night are all present. (Few valves to check this morning) and then head to fit. Didn't know about alloy washer so good job you mentioned it.
