Title: Mileage
Post by: Moorey on October 25, 2017, 04:02:37 PM
As I have just insured the 750f it means I have now owned it 2years and in that time I have done 7000mls on it plus another 2000mls on the CD175. Which got me wondering how many miles a year others do on their old knackers. [meaning the old bikes]  :)
Someone did say to me last weekend it was time I started treating the old girl with a bit more respect. Bikes were always made to be ridden hard and thrashed its the reason for their existence.

My Honda 90 has covered 24,500 miles in the last 2 years, half of them with my teenage daughter on the back. In spite of being thrashed mercilessly to keep up with traffic (55mph!) the only thing other than fuel has been 25 oil changes and a couple of times cleaning the centrifugal oil filter, and a rear tyre. Like all Hondas, built to last!

I think you are treating it with respect, your still using it for it's intended purpose !!!. My view, for what it's worth, is that if the bike is regularly maintained, the mileage and the way it is ridden is of little or no consequence. I can't say for sure what sort of mileage any one particular of my old classic bikes covers per annum as I ride quite a few but they are all serviced every 1000 miles or so and well maintained.

try to do mainly long trips,

get every thing good and hot .

this year I have ridden North Wales,

been to Lincolnshire and Norfolk, not to mention Mid Wales .

Almost all the damage I have seen on old machines results from either a lack of use or bad maintenance, surprisingly little damage is done by using something for what it's designed for if it is actually maintained. My bikes ain't moved for a while but when the sidecar was running it did track up 3000 mile service oil changes every couple of months. These days my commute is normally nearer  2 miles and needs a car for tools so the bike has taken a back seat as family takes the time and money left over from self employment.
