Title: Yellow paint
Post by: MrDavo on November 08, 2017, 08:12:58 AM
Here’s a new one, call me shallow and easily impressed but one thing that makes a restored bike look ‘as new’ to me is when you see the little yellow paint marks to show certain safety critical parts such as the rear brake lever and axle nuts are still tight as they left the dealers.

Is there a service bulletin covering these? Is it a specific paint (chromate?).

Sorry i'm shallow and easily impressed as well.
To get the (what i consider) correct colour i mix Humbrol yellow and a tiny bit of orange "to taste" ::)
as for where it goes i try and use my memory and hope .

Ah Humbol ..another old Hull company that went to the wall. Brake disc mounting nuts/bolts definitely had those yellow paint marks on my 1st 400/4  but no mention of applying it in this link.

Never seen a bulletin for this but, all engine to frame mounting bolts, the brake bolts, all banjo bolts, bottom yoke bolts, brake splitter bolt, swinging arm nut, rear brake pedal  and the carb adjuster nuts  ::) Not on the axle as it has a split pin  ;)

Thanks for that list, I'm surprised there isn't an obvious bulletin, they were just using best practice or common sense then. The PDI bulletin was interesting, I never realised there was so much to do including carbs tappets and timing, I assumed they just put the wheels on and gassed it up. really.

I'm going to the Classic Show at the NEC on Sunday, it'll give me something to look out for on the stalls.

I'm not going to do everything on Trigger's list, I dont want it to look like it has the pox.

Not necessarily ...though I only saw that yellow paint on mid 70's bikes.

Bryan kindly loaded me all of his Service Bulletins to scan. What I intend to do is copy the ones we already have in Alladins cave and include Bryan's and make a single PDF download ...now that we have our new posh scanner at work. Will look tonight Rich .. You could ask ChrisR about the paint on CB750's ..he is  bound to know. Also there's a guy called Mick I am in touch with  who worked as the foreman at Freddie Friths in Grimsby who assembled & PDi'd CB750's when they first came out here in 1970. He's the person who told me that the first CB750 they got in was broken out of the crate and the engine sold two two famous sidecar racing chappies (brothers). He's still got a K1 750. Of course Bran may know about the paint but possibly not on 1970 models.

When I had finished rebuilding my F1 I used Humbrol yellow (#69 Gloss) to mark all what I though of as critical nuts and bolts for my own piece of mind as I had never done a 100% every nut and bolt restoration before, so I wanted to be sure that nothing loosened off.
Humbrol are back in production in the UK now, they have switched production back from China

Cheers

My mate Mark, who's a classic bike dealer these days, he used to have a bike shop, turned up yesterday to do a valuation on my bike for the insurance agreed value.

We used to Classic race together, usually in different classes, but we both have the same photo on the wall of the two of us side by side at Brands in 1994 at John Surtees' 60th Anniversary meeting, me on a 500 Triton, Mark on his 350 MV twin ( I beat him, just :) )

I mentioned this thread to him, he told me about Demon Tweeks paint pens, so I don't need the Gallon, Green1!

When I worked for an engineering / manufacturing firm they used paint pens to mark critical bolts on new machinery once assembled, they even had 3 coulors so each build station producing new stuff had it's own coulor- in theory giving traceability to who assembled anything. I geuss it's a nice touch on an immaculate restoration. Interestingly I've picked up some right rough old clunkers that still had this paint on some bolts, probably indicating in these cases a total lack of any maintenence, at least two ofmy bikes have had that still on the headstock nuts so probably never saw fresh grease in the headstock in 30 years.

If they use it in industry, then I guess the reason you never see it mentioned in a service bulletin is that all the places you find the paint marks were tightened at the factory.

If we're a dealer thing I am sure the yellow would vary from dealer to dealer and why would they all stick to yellow
Must be factory applied
