Title: Battery is it goosed?
Post by: paulbaker1954 on December 30, 2017, 05:34:33 PM
Just noticed my 2 year old battery (Nitro YB12A-A) was struggling on cranking. I keep it topped up with an optimiser.

Just checked and it needed a massive top up so must have been halfway down cells - agggh!!!

Topped up and back on charge but will it be buggered having got so low or will it recover?

Interesting that I heard using optimisers tends to dry em up, anyone confirm this.

Any time you charge a battery whether its a big or small charge rate the liquids need to "Gass" for charge to be accepted so water vapour exits the vent. You may save the battery its a 50/50

I keep the battery off the bike in winter, I charge it for a few hours with the optimate when the voltage drops to 12.4 volts, this is about once every few weeks.

I thought that was what an Optimate charger did automatically for you?

Put a gel battery on my 550 3 years ago, no problems at all, feels like it will crank all day

Optimate half-dried my battery too. Doesnt hold full charge any more.
Still, was going to treat me to a new batt in Spring anyway.
