Title: Engine paint what primer??
Post by: Wenman on September 23, 2018, 07:40:55 PM
Can anyone recommend any engine paint please?

Obv thinking a high temp VHT preferably a satin black?

Also I was going to use an acid etch primer due to the aluminium?
Will any acid etch work? Does it come in a high temp version?

Thanks u lot!

Al

Simoniz VHT, no primer or etch required. If you wanted silver I would suggest SIMVHT31D but I don't know the part number of black off the top of my head.
Edit...SIMVHT20C is black.

Thanks Julie!

Would anyone know if have cleaned and sandblasted the head and barrels, if I wanted to leave it unpainted would I have to coat it with anything to prevent oxidisation etc?

It will oxidize quite quickly if left bare, it would need something i'm sure unless you want to de fluff it every weekend 😭😭

I have my engine with a sandblasted work(about 5 or 6 years ago) and not paint or protection, and looks as the first day, not oxidation, is true that I live in Spain and the weather is different......

I used POR15 engine enamel on my Moto Guzzi engine after cleaning it and preparing it with POR15 Metal Ready/Prep.

It stayed on when petrol and even battery acid got spilled on it.

I live in Madrid and here doesnt rain much (20 days to the year perhaps...).....I think that  salt on the roads is the problem, but here there is not that problem (at the north of Spain yes) or near of the coast zone, not problem about oxidation here, belive me.

I'm hoping that climate change will bring your weather up to us soon! 😎

I wish my Guzzi engine looked that good. Mine looks like its been dunked in the ocean and it only has around 9000 on it.

In 2007ish I just cleaned the engine with paraffin to degrease it and then got rid of the oxidation with my Dremel/Brillo pads/bits and bobs, no primer, then painted it using US Automotive VHT Aluminium paint, the head, barrels, etc that were separate were baked in the oven. It's lasted well but needs a bit of work now.

I did my 500 head and barrels and baked in the oven. But I managed to support them in the oven in such a way that the liners slid out of the barrels  :o
I had to turn them around and put them back in till they got hot enough and slid back in. DOH!
Paint came out okay though.

Not as drastic as Peter's liners but I set the oven to the temperature specified on the can but I am used to working in centigrade at work, unfortunately the instructions on the can were in fahrenheit so the nice silver paint turned yellow, the second time it went great.

Never rated the VHT as it will yellow at high temperature, if a paint yellows at over 93c, a engine gets higher temp than that. I will always stick to my old stuff that cures at 220c  ;)
