Remove from the outside,, just carefully press a small sharp-bladed screwdriver into the face of the seal to pierce a small hole, then with a piece of strong wire with a hook bent on the end, pull it straight out. If you have a tool something like a dentist pick you could use that instead.... then press the new one in and carefully tap home with a small socket on the end of an extension bar (1/4” drive will be small enough) put some silicone grease on the new seal to help avoid damage when fitting it.

I find inserting a very small self tapping screw through the seal and pulling with pliers the easiest way.

Thanks again guys , slowly getting to know about 400 fours , balanced my carbs yesterday and he’s 100% better on tickover and slow running . Went for a ride on the north Cornwall roads and couldn’t stop grinning especially having my first pillion passenger with me. Forgot how good these bikes must have been 40 years ago , have to get out of the habit of trying to get my knee down and remembering its not an R1 .

HaHa- but like the R1 of my vintage one, its got carbs that will need attention if left standing...ruddy pilot-jets!
