Hi.
I've removed the oil filter cover to replace the oil filter. As you do!! The bolt I notice has a spring and piston mechanism within. How can I check this is functioning properly. Why do I want to know this Imhear you all say in unison! Well the bike came with a bolt on oil cooler. Reason not known but previous owner doesn't know why as these bikes did not have a reputation for overheating he said. I removed this at the same time as it looks bog ugly.
Is it possible that this bolt mechanism was not working and that is why someone added the oil cooler?
That it why I want to find out if the parts work before I refit the filter and top up oil etc.

Ricardo,
It is the bypass valve incase the filter gets clogged.
Without testing the spring tension you won't know.
If in doubt buy a new OEM one ;)

These bikes do have a reputation for running very hot, in fact, not just a reputation, its a fact.

Could it have been used as a race bike previously? Racers often need oil coolers because they're pushing the engines harder than normal use.

hi all.
Excellent advice thanks.
Will a new one come with the contents installed if I go down this route?

Yes.
Get a 17mm head one. Makes life easier.
Just don’t torque it up too tight.

There should also be a spring on the outside of the bolt to push the filter towards the engine and a thin steel washer between the spring and filter, frequently sticks to the rubber seal on the filter and gets thrown out with the oil

Many thanks for the advice. Should I re fit the ugly oil cooler or just ride in a leisurely fashion?

Only need the cooler if being an utter looney in a hot summer. Just change the oil and filter regularly 1500miles/annualy

Dear BryanJ
That is the correct answer thank you.
