Hi folks
I'm after info on the tacho drive seal on 500/4's, I've done a search and all I could find was mention of the 750 seal.
What I'd like to know is ....are these seals as unobtanium as the Honda SOHC spares bloke at Stafford Show says they are, I thought if anyone had them he would.
Mine's pissing oil out.
And while I'm asking, I could do with renewing the main gearbox output shaft (final drive shaft) seal and the clutch push rod seal if anyone knows where to get them
I have a clutch and cover from a 550/4 and was thinking of fitting them to my 500/4, is this mod worth doing and what do you do with the hole in the crankcases where the push rod went.

All the seals are readily available from Dave Silver, just get the part numbers from the cmsnl website. The engine casings need splitting to replace the trans shaft seal, you may have to replace the trans shaft as well as the oil seal wears a groove in the bearing which cannot be bought separately. You have to dig around on the net but you can find them in America for

You can get a complete engine seal kit from either dave silver or ebay, the man at stafford is talking out of his fundamental orriface UNLESS you were asking about the alloy housing then he was right!

No not the actual tacho drive housing, just the seal is needed.
I've had a look around at the CMSNL and Dave Silver sites and found the seal kits, not sure they include the tacho drive seal but they're

Here (clicky (http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB500K1-FOUR-1972/part_61498/)) is the engine oil seal kit Dave Silver lists, it doesn't mention which seals are in the kit only that it contains "all" 9 seals.
I've counted....
1 Kick start
2 Gear change
3 Clutch push rod
4 Clutch actuator (helix)
5 Selector drum
6 Crank Right
7 Crank Left
8 Final drive
9 Tacho drive
Am I missing any?? or am I to assume the Tacho drive is included then?

Yes the tacho seal is in the kit and no the sprocket seal is not lipped, but then never seen one leak either! Have seen gearchange seal leak tho'---usually because of crud on the shaft, also if the pushrod seal is leaking it's usualy 'cos the pushrod has been broken by a loose chain

Thanks Brian, good point ....is it the final drive shaft seal leaking?
I think I'm gonna have to do a real good degrease under the front sprocket cover and take the bike out for a spin to confirm which seal is leaking, I could do with the 550 clutch cover mod doing first, that way I could take it out for a spin without the sprocket cover fitted to watch for the first signs of oil leak.
I know the tacho seal is leaking, thats easy to see :D

Just fitting the 550 cover does not work!!
You would need
Complete 550 clutch
550 primary gear
550 clutch cover
Modified crankcases as the clutch cover has a different gasket shape
550 rubber blanking plug instead of pushrod seal (now obsoleted!)
LH rear engine bracket
Or to put it another way DON'T BOTHER

I assumed I'd need the cover, clutch, and have to blank the old push rod hole.
I have all the parts needed (including the primary gear which I didn't know I'd need)
I wasn't aware that the crankcases would need modifying! Bugger!
Not worth the effort then.
I have a complete 550 parts bike so may just transplant the whole lump. Trouble is the 500 motor has been with me for so long I'm a bit fond of it (sentimental old tosser LOL)

Engine oil seal kit arrived today from Silvers,
