Desperately Seeking!! / 1977 CB750F2
« on: September 15, 2022, 10:05:50 AM »
Back to searching the internet for some parts,
Looking for standard UK handlebars for a 1977 CB750F2, they do not have to be Honda, I have just bought some from eBay but they are not quite right when I put them up against my trashed standard pair.
Also and this may be rocking horse poo, looking for some seat trim, I do not have measurements for it so could not search everywhere.

Project Board / 1977 CB750F2 Restoration
« on: September 13, 2022, 10:13:37 AM »
Somewhere around 1992 we switched to 12 hour shifts at work so 4 on 4 off became the norm, so I wanted something to tinker with on my days off, in the back garden next door to a friends was a bike which turned out to be a 750 Honda so I bought it as a project.
This is it at the start of the stripdown

I always like the MV Augusta racing bikes so decided to have an all red bike, Vauxhall red was my choice of colour, Halfords rattle cans providing the paint.

Clip ons and rearsets, the old formula, and an Alpha 4:1 was purchased for the finished "masterpiece".
A Power Bronze seat was also bought to complete the look.

The top end was overhaulled, new pistons, rings, valves, valve springs and the engine cleaned up and painted, ready to be installed.
But it was not to be, in 1994 I got a job on a refinery start up in Thailand and we left these shores for the next 10 years

We were out shopping the other day on the Greyhound retail park Chester and saw this in a shop window, could not believe it, the shop sold unlikely items made into lamps.

Misc / Open / I'm geting old
« on: October 10, 2021, 07:54:14 PM »
I decided to get round to fitting the new tyres today, got the bike out of the garage, nice sunny day, the back brake was a bit sticky so I thought that I would also check that while I had the back wheel out.

Got the back wheel out, got the caliper off, stripped it cleaned all the bits and it looked fine.

Wrestled with the tyre but got it off eventually it was a bit hard, mind you I fitted it around 2007 (TT100), then I did something stupid, I fitted the new tyre and tube using tyre levers and I pinched the tube which resulted in two holes in the tube.

Years ago I did the same and swore that I would not use tyre levers again and I didn't until today, old age creeping up on me again.

So I fitted the tyre and tube the way I have done it for many years,
1. Put the new tyre on the rim (one side)
2. Take the valve out of the tube, insert the tube into the tyre and inflate to get it to seat into the tyre.
3. Place the wheel disc side down.
4. Using heels and toes push the tyre onto the rim, took me 5 minutes and no fuss or pinching, I did make sure that I was near a wall for balance though.

Replace the valve and inflate the tyre, check it is even around the rim, deflate and bounce if not.

I then replaced the wheel, refilled the master cylinder with brake fluid and bled it, I cheat and have speed bleeders fitted so it was easy and quick.

This took me all day and I was worn out at the end, what happened to the days when I could take a wheel out and repair a puncture by the road side with not fuss.

Misc / Open / Used Tyres
« on: October 09, 2021, 04:05:49 PM »
Just got round to replacing the tyres on my 750 and wondered what you lot do with the old ones these days, in the old days I would have taken them to the tip but that is not allowed now and no they can't go on the garage/shed roof either. I was thinking of chopping them up and putting them in the bin.

Where's My Old Bike? / CB750K1 RCM 45K
« on: July 27, 2020, 07:07:47 PM »
Spurred on by the CB750F2 thread I would love to find out that my old bike was still chugging along it was a 1971 CB750K1, reg RCM 45K. After a really spectacular camshaft failure on the way to Mallory I rebuilt it with a 900cc conversion, clip ons, Koni's, steering damper and a 4 into one with a Dunstall silencer. Oh and just for good measure I resprayed it white.

Misc / Open / One of those brown envelopes from the DVLA
« on: June 07, 2019, 07:22:20 PM »
This morning one of those unmistakable brown envelopes dropped through our letter box, "darn and dash" thought I just when I was a bit skint but on opening it I was pleased (big grin) to find that it was for my F1 and the cost for 12 months tax was NIL, I like this idea.

Misc / Open / Optimate do I need to disconnect the battery
« on: October 30, 2018, 11:49:05 AM »
As the title says, normally when I bed my bike down (CB750F1) I disconnect the battery from the leads and fit the Optimate cables, I have noticed on other bikes that the Optimate "tail" is permanently fitted to the battery for a quick connect. Is this safe ?

Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / Moonstone Leather Crafts
« on: June 12, 2015, 10:16:26 AM »
Well had a shakedown ride up to the Horseshoe pass for a cuppa and sausage batch at the Ponderosa, but somewhere along the way the zip in my leather jeans gave out, drafty and a a bit embarrassing but potentially expensive as well. My clever wife rang around and found the number for Josie and her business and within a day all was fixed and I did not have to sell any body parts to pay for it. They also do Race leathers, alterations to leather riding gear, and seat recovering, based on the Wirral in Bromborough (North West England), highly recommended.

CB750 / Sat Nav power supply
« on: April 11, 2015, 11:02:53 AM »
Well after some cardiac problems in February I'm back to normal, as I hope to be using the bike more and my sense of direction is still rubbish I want to fit a power supply for my sat nav, at present it is in a waterproof case mounted on the handlebars, but it does not have a power supply. It works great but I'm always aware that it could run out of juice anytime.
I bought a waterproof socket from eBay and my first idea was to wire it up to the old indicator audible horn thingy wires that way it would only be live when the ignition was turned on, but looking at it I could attach it directly to the battery as it would only draw power when the sat nav is plugged in. Any ideas, views, suggestions ?

CB750 / MPG on a CB750F1
« on: September 23, 2014, 09:04:00 AM »
Just spent the day cruising around North Wales, did about 146 miles of mainly A and B class roads, generally keeping to the speed limits (mainly 60 mph), the bike ended up doing 48 mpg, is this a normal figure for these bikes, in the olden days I just filled the thing up with no thought to fuel economy so I have no idea of what it used to do.

CB750 / CB750F2 head gasket
« on: September 16, 2014, 03:37:14 PM »
Well after working on the grandsons bike and getting in some riding time on the F1 I decided to do something about the various lumps of metal dotted around the garage, these make up a 1977 CB750F2 that I bought in the late 1980's to give me something to play with. The bike had sat out in the rain with the plugs out for a couple of years so I rebuilt the top end with new pistons, rings valves etc, stripped the whole bike and resprayed it all red, then in 1994 came the chance to work overseas so off I went for the next 10 years. When we came back (2004) it was time to overhaul the house, this took a couple of years, then another couple of years to rebuild my CB750F1, but I never got around to finishing the F2, I started painting all the parts black and took down the top end of the engine to check it out.
So now I have started to rummage through the parts that I bought for the rebuild way back when, I have found a new gasket set from David Silvers (KP) which I bought for the F2, and the remnants of an NP set which includes a head gasket as I always use genuine Honda head gaskets, I also found another head gasket sandwiched between two pieces of grease proof paper with no markings at all, this one has the small stud holes in all locations so I think it is an earlier one.
The question is as the genuine F2 gaskets seem to be extinct which one should I use the KP one or the NP one as I have no experience of either, trawling through other posts on the subject seem to say keep away from the Athena one.

Cheers
