The hole in the stand is a guide for a tube of some sort. Rocker breather or perhaps the lead acid battery overflow

Ash - they will clean out just fine. Main problem would be if the pillars supporting the float pin have corroded away at all. Be careful in case they are weak.

Notwithstanding all the above cleaning and prep, once you get past that you might consider finishing the inside like this: http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,4758.0.html

You can also seal small holes with that stuff. The kit I used comes with a small amount of webbing that (I guess) you submerge in the paint in the affected area though this wasn't required in my case.

Not original, obviously, but as a rust solution it works very well.

Crikey! Some experience. Sounds less reliable than a SOHC by some margin!

Might be too obvious but both of the cables look stressed where the flexible leaves the twist grip, they take an unnatural downward turn. Perhaps route them above that brake union? Not sure what the correct routing should be and how customised your bike is.

Cant find any MOTOBATT on DSS.
Any link?

I got mine from mad4bikes via ebay, eg: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400724825719

Check the correct model for your bike.

I have a Motobatt in my 400f that I bought in 2013. Never do anything to it and it's fine. Cranks very strongly on the starter and is good even after a long lay up.

The other day the battery in my VFR failed at three years old. Some brand called LP fitted by the po new. Never cranked that well. Just put a Motobatt in it so we'll see how it goes but cranking much better than the LP ever did.

Has anyone heard from Lobo (aka Simon) the electric guru ?

I correspond with Simon ad-hoc by email and he's doing well. He flies planes out of the far east so isn't often in the UK. His 400 and 750 are running fine even after extended lay-ups due to his globe-trotting life. Top bikes maintained by a top bloke  :)

As you know Tom, I'm no expert but we put a LED relay on one of our bikes to cure a problem, as suggested by Hairygit (there is a post on here somewhere) and the standard filament bulbs were left in situ. It cured the problem and has been working fine since.
rubescube, the fuses are usually found in the fuse box  ::) ::) ::) What bike is it?

Interesting what you say Julie. I tried (quickly) to find out the electrical specs for LED relays, didn't find any so I assumed they can't switch much. Seems the attraction is that the flash rate doesn't vary with the load, which can still be filament levels, unlike the old flasher units. Agree with Ash's comments about the perception of LEDs.

Well a LED indicator relay drives LED indicators, not filament bulbs, which I assume you still have? These draw many more watts than LEDs so you've likely fried the relay and blown the main fuse.

I guess put back the old relay and replace the fuse...

Great it's sorted. I was going to suggest Sunday but, as with most support problems, if you leave it the protagonist usually sorts it out  :P

Glad it's nothing really serious :)

How about those of us in range all meet up at Mr T's for a group effort? I'm in.
