I assume that you have the standard electrics?

I have a Dresda and the stuff under the seat is anything but standard...

No. Sold it last Saturday.

Clive Brooker bought it. He runs a CR750 in his European Classic Endurance Racing team (Jim Redman rides it in parade laps occasionally)

Looks like you have a 550 tach. Here's a picture of my 550K3:

If the guys in the US are correct and the ratios are indeed:
CB550 20:3
CB750 4:1

Then your rev counter is reading a factor of 1.67 to high.

750 guys. Is 4800rpm at 70mph more reasonable?

If so, looks like a quest for a replacement (750) tach.

What revs does the rev counter say at 70mph? (Others on here with F2s will advise as to whether this is correct)

Honda rev counters are not necessarily interchangeable (even though they may look similar) and run on different ratios.
There's a FAQ on the US site which gives the different ratios.

Show us a photo of the clocks.

How are your fabrication skills?

Here's a FAQ that was written by "OhioCafeRacers" from the US site.

Basic checks to start with:

1. Kill switch nudged (or shorting out)?
2. Remove a plug - is it wet?
3. Do you get a spark on the removed plug when held against the cylinder head?

I'm assuming that the engine turns over on the starter?

I've also seen duff plugs act like that, albeit on my old Escort and not on a bike.

New plug had a fault that meant it would spark against the cylinder head but not when on the compression stroke.
