The 400f f2 has a speedo face with a KPH scale on the face in green inside the MPH calibrations. As far as I'm aware machines exported to the U.S. did not have that type fitted.

Misc / Open / Re: Clocks / Instrument Repairs?

If the CB900 instruments are basically the same as the CB750 ones I have a trip reset knob, it's the type secured by a tiny crosshead screw. There are other alternatives if it does not matter too much that it's not original, I've re-machined radio knobs in the past. Then there's tube caps, toothpaste ones are white but some products have back ones. Certainly ideal for a 400f ones that I get on a regular basis to restore, even more so following a 400f feature in the May Classic Motorcycle Magazine. As for painting, satin black I assume, it's better that they are taken apart for re-paint but if they are not too bad it can be done assembled. A decent job can be made with a rattle can. The best can to use comes from Halfords, seems to provide a better Finnish.

Russell, one of our VJMC Kent Branch members rebuilt a CB650 a year or so ago and made a super job of it. He's always at our club nights and would be a useful source of information. Check out our site www.vjmckent-branch.co.uk

CB500/550 / Re: Speedometer
« on: September 21, 2008, 11:45:43 AM »
The post started off as a question about speedometers and has diversified slightly! The speedometer in question still works up to 50mph so the chances are that somthing has become jammed between the internal magnet Quite often the bases corrode inside and a flake of rust is attracted to the magnet. It needs to come apart to resolve the problem.

If anyone needs details of how to get one apart without damage I have details in PDF format with many images that I can email on request.

The original 500f speedo has a straight drive, a tiny screw securing the trip knob and provision for only one bulb.

CB500/550 / Re: non obtainable parts

Having made and had unobtainable parts made I can tell you it needs research. A useful book on the subject of casting rubber parts is:
How to cast small metal and ruibber parts. by William A. Cannon. It's available from Amazon. The book covers mould making and using Devcon Flexane Liquid. A plaster mould might be OK for a 'one off' but to produce a quantity an aluminum mould would be the best way to go. I looked into making an unobtainable grommet but in the end found one I could modify for the purpose.

You could try 'On All Fours' John 01142 889465. He deals in just 400f parts new and used. He has a 'day job' so after 6pm is best. I would think there's a very good chance he can sort you out.

I'm new on here, registerd on the 'other' site and was spotted by eagle-eyed Steve (within 24 hours) who sent me a P.M. Somehow he had even worked out who I was, must have given something away! Had my present 400f for 20 years, in fact I first had one in 1980, that was stolen and another one replaced it a couple of years later. It's a '75 and a clean original example. It's fairly safe to say there's not much I don't know these bikes after 28 years of ownership, yes I'm old! I was an engineer so if it's broke I'll find some way of mending it what ever it is. A few other bikes in the garage, BMW, Trumph, and a Velo. One under the stairs a CB160, restored to show condition, that's why it's in the house! Get some side-ways looks from neighbours if they happen to see if imerge from the front door but who cares!
