Misc / Open / Re: Agreed Value insurance
« on: March 02, 2021, 02:14:08 PM »
Today I rang Carole Nash insurers for a quote for my motorhome but they won't insure me because I do not have a car. My girlfriend has a car I'm a named driver on her insurance.

I'm insured with Carole Nash for 8 classic bikes, which are my main transport.

Other insurers I have asked for quotes from are more than happy with my motorhome not being my main vehicle. I will be leaving CN next year.

NOT HAPPY with CN!

CB500/550 / Re: Copper Washers on Cylinder head cover and side covers
« on: March 02, 2021, 12:00:14 PM »
Any copper washers can be re-used if not damaged, copper work hardens so will need heating to cherry red colour and leaving to cool to anneal, they are then soft and should not need flattening/filing as they will do that when tightened down against. Of course this may remove the plating.

I make copper head gasket for my 4 cylinder bikes which I re-use in the same way.

The Black Bomber Board / Re: Starter Motor Conundrum
« on: February 11, 2021, 07:01:54 PM »
I had this on an old Ford Escort years ago, I thought the battery was on its way out, so bought new but got the same slow starter motor, turned out the brushes were worn, they looked like they still had loads of life left in them just worn, they were shorter meaning the springs weren't pushing the brushes onto the commutator hard enough. I bent the springs a bit to make them exert more pressure and the motor went like mad again.

Maybe?

As said, assemble dry, then introduce petrol.

Been there!  I had to stick my mitt into the flames to turn off the fuel when the carb spit back and burned through the old fabric covered petrol pipe.  This happened during an attempted bump start.  Had to do a full rewire due to the damage.  Luckily my neighbour was watering his garden with a hosepipe.  I was lucky not to go up with it.  Shat myself!

Paul

My brother had completed a very nice restoration of a BSA Super Rocket, on first kick it spat back and burst into flames, my stupid reaction was to bang my hand over the carb bell mouth instantly putting out the flames with absolutely no damage. What a numpty, I got lucky, imagine it not going out and me being covered in burning petrol. The joys of open carbs.
I have bell mouths on my 500/4, they have mesh at the back, I like to think of them as flame arrestors rather than filters.

Other Bikes / Re: fer forks sake (Honda NF75)

Very similar to Z50R forks. The bike came to me with one chromed lower part, the other missing, and the one I had was badly bent, I was Toolmaking at the time so I put some Galvo pipe in the cylindrical grinder and ground it round and made new nylon fork bushes to suit. That was when my eldest was 1, she's 30 now with her own 18 month old son, I still have the bike so when he's a little older...     ;)

A sheep in wolfs clothing it may be, but its got some nice goodies on it. Wheels, brakes, rearsets, forks (?), and of course bodywork. I'm not sure how well it do a U-turn, where does the speedo go o full lock? or if its fairing frame mounted do the forks hit it? sortable though.

Interesting bike, not so the price :o

Tricks & Tips / Re: removing caliper pistons
« on: January 13, 2021, 03:33:18 PM »
It is a good method.

But why remove the piston pump that comes with the brake - the master cylinder, to fit a different piston pump - a grease gun? I use the master cylinder to pump out the piston.

I've just sent the pic to my daughter, besides her ER6 Kwak, KLX250 Kwak, Honda CBR600 track bike, she has a CB125 (cable disc version) that we are planning a resto/cafe job on, her response was... "Wow can we do that to mine!"

If not available as a reproduction or daft price I would try to find a used one. I would not be keen on repairing until all other avenue's are exhausted.

Always better than repaired, since fitting mine I've found an unbroken original and will swap it over some time.
