Misc / Open / Lifespan of a helmet
« on: May 26, 2020, 11:24:43 PM »
So I have a Schuberth helmet - which for me, is perfect. I don’t want to change it, but it is 9yo now, and I’m asking if this is a big deal?

It’s had a gentle life of a couple of hrs use / week, kept dry, and in soft surroundings. And of course, never been dropped.

So... is it good forever, or do these things need replacing on-time?

Other Bikes / Moto Guzzi 1200 / starting issues
« on: April 07, 2020, 04:08:11 AM »
Hi all, possibly one for Mick / Green1 - but welcome all thoughts.

Have a 2011 Griso 1200SE, which has only got about 3500 dry miles on it. Never seen a dealer whilst in my possession, and probably not since it’s 1st service.

Anyways, it’s a momentary-press starter button, which then cranks the motor as much as necessary. Previously this’d be a couple of seconds.... now it’s a full crank cycle of about 5 secs ... after which it aborts. 2nd attempt sometimes catches, 3 attempts and it’ll catch and keep running... for now. After this it’ll run a bit lumpy for the first mile.

I’ve tightened all the manifold and exhaust clamps, which has cured a pop on the overrun. I’ve put injector cleaner through the tank, and only ever use the highest octane / quality fuel avail.

It’s had new plugs recently; and the tappets adjusted iaw the manual.

MotoGuzzi dealers very thin on the ground here in Bris; by and large I’m not a fan of dealerships / garages unless personally recommended.

Anyhoos folks; thoughts please?

Simon

CB750 / Air box to Carb Rubbers
« on: March 19, 2020, 08:35:01 AM »
Hi all,

Having endless frustrations trying to mate my K2 carb inlets to the airbox rubbers, which appear 5mm too short... and not square on. (If I tighten the jubilees too much they simply slide the rubbers clear of the carb inlet manifolds)

The pic describes it better.

Am I missing something obvious, or simply playing with crap pattern parts?

Simon

CB750 / Speedo conversion to kph.
« on: January 25, 2020, 10:14:44 PM »
Beginning to tire of constantly doin’ the math as I drive about a kph country on my mph clocks. Lecram kindly provided me K2 kph faces when I bought new crimp rings, and perhaps the time has come for the change over.
Except I’ve just realised the trip & odometer will still be in miles. Dang.
Anyone know where the difference is... ie within the instrument or speedo drive?
An easy fix... obtainable parts etc?
(I assume the needle will continue to read correctly; as simply against a different linear scale.)

Simon

Misc / Open / Daisy & nipples
« on: May 21, 2019, 01:04:23 PM »
Ok, got your attentions.. (!) 😀 (Steve - hope ya don’t mind a bloody car gate crashing the SOHC Forum - sorry)

Not my Hondas, but rather my Kombi (Daisy), whose spark plugs have those wretched screw on nipples. These nipples seem to be always loose / unscrewing, and the plug leads matings kinda clamped but never gripping... so the question is, are there HT losses / spark inefficiencies in this connector system?
I know it’d be fairly easy to swap the leads over to the screw thread type attachment - but they’re new etc and I’ll wait if no big deal.

CB750 / Red line engineering
« on: April 15, 2019, 11:55:58 PM »
Apologies, likely discussed before...
Interested to learn the criteria in setting the red line (rev) limits on our bikes (or any i/c engine). Whilst I wouldn’t do it - would it be acceptable to take my 47yo K2 upto it’s limit? Is there a 5% rule (or suchlike) that is assumed the engine won’t operate @ the max rpm. Is there a ‘fat factor’... how much? What form would the failure likely take - valves first? So many questions...

CB750 / Front brake lever travel
« on: April 09, 2019, 11:06:28 AM »
Ok, so I need to take up weight lifting...
My K2’s front brake lever begins to bite at about 1/2” travel, with full brake at about 1” - ie my fingers are still pretty much at full stretch.
My mate’s K1; and indeed my 400F, have far gentler brake feels, and are far more efficient hand ergonomics wise.
Any tips to fettles this - barring topping up the system with air!

Simon.

CB750 / Fork oil leak
« on: March 21, 2019, 03:04:59 AM »
...not my week for oil weeps. (400F engine too..)
My K2 has developed a slight leak at the stanchon / fork slider seal,  despite new (DSS) aftermarket stanchions / seals 1000 miles or so ago. My guess is oil’s weeping past the seat of the seal, rather than the oil seal lip.
Is this a full stanchion out job... or is there a quick easy way of popping the seal? Certainly with no pitting and new parts I’m inclined to reseat rather than replace.
All comments welcome.

CB350/400 / Head + Rocker cover torques...
« on: March 21, 2019, 02:32:53 AM »
Guess one for the builders here, Gents...
Slight oil weep on the ‘400, emanating within the fins / RHS. The engine was rebuilt about 500miles ago, and so figured I’d simply re-torque the head.
Which is what I’ve now done...
Have to say, and using ‘Clarkson parlance, “poo was coming out” as I slackened, and re-torqued each to the book figure (15 ft-lb). Fingers crossed the slight weep has been remedied.
The Rocker cover however, was a different matter, and I noted at least 3 thread inserts already in place. And whilst I couldn’t bring myself to use the book figure this time (6 ft-lb)... bloody #12 (the last bolt!) failed to tighten... even to my calibrated elbow.. and well below 5ft-lbs.
So... that thread has an insert now, and job fettled... til next time.
Q - any comments here wrt using book figures on 40 yo engines which may have indeed been apart more than once.  And if so... given how soft these heads are... what are you typically torquing to? There seems to be a finite number of times these motors can be taken apart and put together!

Tricks & Tips / Worn kick start spindle.
« on: December 12, 2018, 01:01:18 PM »
Hi all,

A while since I’ve posted... all bikes safely now in Oz and bloody amazingly undamaged. Cost a fortune... still not through... now need QLD Compliance certificates / thence roadworthy checks blah blah. The things we do for love eh?

ANYWAYS. My wee SS50 kick starter shaft / Kickstarter are splinelees buggers, and recently given up playing together ... and of course those parts now n/a.

(1) anyone got a spare / good condition kick starter for a ‘77 5 Speed SS50 please? (I can actually source a suitable ‘shaft)
...or
(2) tips / tricks for fettling the problem... any mileage in attempting to drill a 3mm hole down the mating circumferences and inserting a peg?

Ta muchly,
Lobo

PS - if anyone can help with a kick starter it’ll be a UK address!

Other Bikes / DIY Tank painting
« on: June 12, 2018, 01:11:53 AM »
Kinda embarrassing after reading James’es / Julie’s restorations (& all the smart stuff everyone here does)... but recently gave new life to a rather tired little SS50 tank. Got it off eBay, complete with minor dents and little bit of internal rust. Took delivery whilst in LHR - it stank of oil, making me fret wrt ‘dangerous goods’ as carry-on for the flight home. So; rinsed it out in the hotel bath (vinegar, shampoo, everything), which only gave me a whole new problem in that I gave the hotel plumbing a run for its money & made the room smell (horribly) like a breakers yard.

Once back home (Brunei) put the tank into a reverse electrolysis bath for 24 hrs which got virtually all of the rust out. Very tidy inside now.

Next up hrs of bloody sanding... and a first in popping the major dent out with a garden hose... simply controlling the pressure inside the tank by varying my fist seal. Dead chuffed with that. For the remaining minor dents - filler of course.

Next up the base layer / rust protection..

And followed by a good few light coats of Kawasaki Green...  I’ve read this is pretty darned close to the original Honda Mighty Green... which my local paint shop simply couldn’t mix up. (I sprayed this via an old compressor / paint gun / 30psi or so)

Then a rub back with 2400 wet & dry.... decals / preserve nature sticker and a good few coats of automotive lacquer. Saddened at the end of all this to have a couple of small areas of orange peel... but bingo, with more light wet & dry + polishing paste these totally disappeared.

Finally - new badges.

The tank, honestly is beautiful, and has a deep rich gloss finish to it. I of course accept it was simple versus the intricate spraying / two tone / flecked / decalling the professionals do, but hey, a  continuing learning curve, and something I’d happily (will) tackle again.

(a couple of years back I did a Parakeet 400F2 tank... came out nicely but with a couple of minor dreaded orange peel areas.  Will go back & see if I can buff them out..)

CB750 / Exporting my bikes
« on: June 06, 2018, 04:01:29 PM »
I guess James - Sussex is the man here, but if anyone can help please chip in. I plan to retire later this year (yay!) to Oz, and want to take the 5 bikes with me - one is post ‘89, the others all pre ‘89.  Any “gottchas” to be aware of; is it simply filling in the appropriate bit of the V5C and bunging them in a crate? I have of course, got an importer set up for the Brisbane bit. All help / comments wrt the UK side of things appreciated. Ta. Simon
