CB350/400 / Gearbox/Clutch Noise w/video
« on: April 14, 2017, 05:20:36 PM »
Good Day All -

I'm hoping one of you can help diagnose the cause of what I believe to be a clutch or transmission whine emanating from my newly rebuilt CB400F. It can be heard only when power is being transmitted to the rear wheel - i.e., there is no noise in neutral, or in gear with the clutch disengaged but if I place the front wheel against a wall and feed in the clutch a little, the whine becomes apparent. When getting underway and accelerating, it is quite pronounced but at steady roadspeed, it reduces somewhat. On trailing throttle, I can't hear it at all. Clutch operation is smooth, with no dragging or slipping, she snicks up and down through the gears nicely and neutral is easy to find.  Search results from the two forums suggest it may be normal or it may indicate imminent catastrophic failure! Hopefully the video will help narrow it down.

Full disclosure, here: after reassembling the clutch, there was a part left over :o I wasn't too worried at the time, as I couldn't see anything resembling it in the parts manual exploded view and it wouldn't have been the first time a part from the CB450S my step-son was rebuilding in the same shed found its way into the my 400F's parts bins. I'm thinking now it might be relevant. Can anyone identify the part?

Hopefully, the noise is coming from the clutch, as otherwise I'm afraid I'll have to split the cases again and I really don't know what I'd be looking for as all the bearings were replaced during the rebuild!

Thanks and Regards,
Brian

CB750 / sohc4.net carburetor tuning thread
« on: April 09, 2017, 07:30:11 PM »
Hi Guys -

I've been following a really interesting discussion on our sister forum about tuning the Keihin carburetors (carburettors ;)) on the SOHC fours and it occurred to me that there may be some here who don't get across there too often and who might also enjoy it - it certainly made me rethink my understanding! It starts to get good at posting #23. Fascinating read!

To make a long story short, there appears to be some disagreement on the effects of the air screw...

CB350/400 / Exhaust Gaskets - there or not?
« on: March 11, 2017, 07:07:57 PM »
Hi Everyone -

Man! Sometimes I don't know how I make it through the day... ::)

I took this engine apart a little over a year ago. Now it's back together and has actually run for a few seconds - sans pipes -  to check that the new wiring harness and elecktrickery pieces were connected correctly. I was about to fit the header with new exhaust gaskets when it struck me that I don't specifically remember taking the old ones out during disassembly. I might have done so, but it was 14 months ago and my memory isn't what it used to be  :P

If anyone has a bare 400F head in the shed, would you mind having a look and comparing it to mine? I don't want to possibly damage any sealing surfaces by trying to gouge out a gasket that might not be there!

Thanks and Regards,
Brian

CB350/400 / Rear Brake Return Spring Orientation
« on: February 18, 2017, 07:56:30 PM »
Good day Everyone -

Looking for some advice with the installation of the rear brake return spring I removed a year and a half ago... and of course, I can't remember the proper way to fit it. I tried site searches at sohc4.net and here and what I found appears to conflict with what I think I see in the manual.

This is the only picture I could find in the Honda shop manual (bottom RHS):

The posting returned from my site search had this written description:

Quote
There are 2 hooks on the spring, with the spring around the brake axle the large hook goes on the frame pipe supporting the saddle, the small one hooks on the lug that pulls the brake rod, in front of the lug to pull the rearbrake switch.

This photograph was posted by another member later in the thread:

Can anyone tell me which - if either - is correct?

Thanks and Regards,
Brian

CB350/400 / New wiring harness installation
« on: December 09, 2016, 06:05:27 PM »
Good afternoon, everyone -

I'm in the process of rebuilding a '75 CB400F and have reached the point of installing a new wiring harness sourced from David Silver Spares' U.S. outlet. I obtained new right and left handlebar switches from 4into1.com and everything seemed to snap together just fine with only a couple of things making me scratch my head. I should mention here that electrical is not my strong suit  ::)

There are three unused bullet connectors in the bundle which resides aft of the steering stem under the tank. The light blue/white and orange/white wires I believe should be connected to the front directional indicators when I install them but the remaining blue/brown is a puzzle. The wiring diagram I have seems to show a blue/brown running in one direction to the tail-light fuse and in the other to a black multiple connector and thence to the horn? Do I connect the horn to this wire?

One more quick question while I have your attention  ;)

The wiring diagram shows a red/green wire from the clutch switch. The replica LH handlebar switch I got from '4into1' does not have a clutch switch - I assume ( :-\) that I can simply jump the red/green from the harness in the headlight to any of the many available green wires also in the headlight shell to make it work?

Thanks for your help,
Brian

New Member Introductions / New 400F Member in The Colonies
« on: December 09, 2016, 05:18:34 PM »
Good Day, Everyone -

As I've already had assistance from a forum member (Thanks, Peter!) and from the 'Search' function in advising me on a frame-off rebuild of a '75 400F for my long-suffering wife, I thought it fitting that I introduce myself prior to asking a bunch more questions!

I live on the East Coast of Canada, where SOHC 4s of any size are relatively rare. There's a 550 in my garage as well which is often ridden by my wife; however, even after lowering the triple tree on the forktubes, fitting shorter shocks and shaving some foam from the seat, The Dear Little Thing still finds the 550 a bit of a handful. She had a chance to ride a beautiful CB400F owned by Lynn and Joel Samick of Retro-Tours a couple of years ago and fell in love with it. I've always thought they were little jewels, so when a barn-find presented itself last year, I grabbed it while I could - as I say, they're scarce as hens' teeth around here.

It had been ridden hard, put away wet and stored in an outdoor shed for about 5 years.

Taking everything apart was the easy bit -

and I've now started putting her back together. And there are so many questions... :P

Anyways, I'm pleased to meet you all and will pop over to the 350/400 board now in search of wiring guidance  :)

Best Regards,
Brian
