You can also get them from TTR400:
http://www.ttr400.com/photo_3.html

They are distributed in North America by 4into1

Not cheap - but gorgeous - I considered buying one to mount in a frame and display on my mantlepiece ;D

+1 on the DOT 5 if you have a clean system. With a new caliper, master cylinder and hoses, I filled my rebuilt 400/F from the bottom  (with a new pump-type oil can - apparently, one of the few disadvantages of DOT 5 is some difficulty in bleeding) and it's worked a treat ever since. Took all of five minutes.

I do remember reading that float needle valves in some of the aftermarket carb kits have a slightly different overall height than the originals. That would certainly affect float level. For that reason, I used the original needle valves - which had next to no wear - with my new carb kits.

CB350/400 / Gearbox/Clutch Noise w/video
« on: April 14, 2017, 05:20:36 PM »
Good Day All -

I'm hoping one of you can help diagnose the cause of what I believe to be a clutch or transmission whine emanating from my newly rebuilt CB400F. It can be heard only when power is being transmitted to the rear wheel - i.e., there is no noise in neutral, or in gear with the clutch disengaged but if I place the front wheel against a wall and feed in the clutch a little, the whine becomes apparent. When getting underway and accelerating, it is quite pronounced but at steady roadspeed, it reduces somewhat. On trailing throttle, I can't hear it at all. Clutch operation is smooth, with no dragging or slipping, she snicks up and down through the gears nicely and neutral is easy to find.  Search results from the two forums suggest it may be normal or it may indicate imminent catastrophic failure! Hopefully the video will help narrow it down.

https://youtu.be/2tdTc9uSn_U

Full disclosure, here: after reassembling the clutch, there was a part left over :o I wasn't too worried at the time, as I couldn't see anything resembling it in the parts manual exploded view and it wouldn't have been the first time a part from the CB450S my step-son was rebuilding in the same shed found its way into the my 400F's parts bins. I'm thinking now it might be relevant. Can anyone identify the part?

Hopefully, the noise is coming from the clutch, as otherwise I'm afraid I'll have to split the cases again and I really don't know what I'd be looking for as all the bearings were replaced during the rebuild!

Thanks and Regards,
Brian

CB750 / sohc4.net carburetor tuning thread

Hi Guys -

I've been following a really interesting discussion on our sister forum about tuning the Keihin carburetors (carburettors ;)) on the SOHC fours and it occurred to me that there may be some here who don't get across there too often and who might also enjoy it - it certainly made me rethink my understanding! It starts to get good at posting #23. Fascinating read!

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,164119.0.html?PHPSESSID=io4l0ho4sg8ugmdte74sj0a2c6

To make a long story short, there appears to be some disagreement on the effects of the air screw...

I hope the replacement works out for you. I have/had the same issue with my newly rebuilt 400/F. The E-Bay reg/rec sold as specifically for the 400/F plugged right in but I could read only 0.05VDC on the white and no increase in voltage at the battery or on the white with variations in rpm. When I put a jumper between the black and white wires, all seemed fine. I'll be plugging in the replacement later today and I hope it works - otherwise I'll be thinking I did something wrong with the new wiring harness - odds are against me getting two duff units in a row, aren't they? :P

I won't be too concerned digging into them with an awl tomorrow morning then.

Thank you, Gentlemen! ;D

CB350/400 / Exhaust Gaskets - there or not?
« on: March 11, 2017, 07:07:57 PM »
Hi Everyone -

Man! Sometimes I don't know how I make it through the day... ::)

I took this engine apart a little over a year ago. Now it's back together and has actually run for a few seconds - sans pipes -  to check that the new wiring harness and elecktrickery pieces were connected correctly. I was about to fit the header with new exhaust gaskets when it struck me that I don't specifically remember taking the old ones out during disassembly. I might have done so, but it was 14 months ago and my memory isn't what it used to be  :P

If anyone has a bare 400F head in the shed, would you mind having a look and comparing it to mine? I don't want to possibly damage any sealing surfaces by trying to gouge out a gasket that might not be there!

Thanks and Regards,
Brian

CB350/400 / Rear Brake Return Spring Orientation
« on: February 18, 2017, 07:56:30 PM »
Good day Everyone -

Looking for some advice with the installation of the rear brake return spring I removed a year and a half ago... and of course, I can't remember the proper way to fit it. I tried site searches at sohc4.net and here and what I found appears to conflict with what I think I see in the manual.

This is the only picture I could find in the Honda shop manual (bottom RHS):

The posting returned from my site search had this written description:

Quote
There are 2 hooks on the spring, with the spring around the brake axle the large hook goes on the frame pipe supporting the saddle, the small one hooks on the lug that pulls the brake rod, in front of the lug to pull the rearbrake switch.

This photograph was posted by another member later in the thread:

Can anyone tell me which - if either - is correct?

Thanks and Regards,
Brian

What is it? / Re: clocks but for what
« on: December 11, 2016, 10:04:33 PM »
Just in case anyone else looks at these pics, they are CB550F2 clocks, also fitted to the CB550K3 bike. The facia is blue which means it's the F2 version of the 550, the F1 version had green facias.

'Kay.., I'm new here - and was exploring backwards through the various boards when I saw this posting from three months ago. Wow!! The very fact that you know this, Oddjob, gives me great hope of finding an answer for just about any conceivable question I might have while rebuilding my SOHC Honda ;D

The accumulated knowledge in this forum is simply stunning!

Thank you for the warm welcome! Plus the advice and encouragement from which I've already benefitted in the few days since I signed up.

I loved the early Raygun 750's,as racers they sounded  wonderful, especially being in front of a MV 3 !!!

One of the things, along with the history and cachet,  I love most about the Old Dear - that exhaust note will rip the yellow line right off the asphalt  ;D (especially compared with the 'potato-potato' sound of most of the bikes in this area. It's also fun at the coffee shop on a sunny Sunday afternoon explaining that the gears are changed from the right-hand side and that lump of metal on the front wheel is a twin-leading shoe drum brake! I've had people (usually younger) ask if it's Japanese (despite the Union Jack on the rear mudguard, the 'Made in England' inscription on the licence plate frame and the wee spot of oil under the engine :-[ ) and whether or not the engine is a diesel.  ::)

but gragually being taken over by masses of 400-4 's !!!

I've been a member of SOHC4.net for years and they were - and continue to be - of immense help with the 550. My understanding - which has recently been confirmed correct - is that the 400/4 was better suited to the tight turns and short straights on narrow two-lane roads in the U.K. and Europe than to the boulevards and arrow-straight dual-carriageways of North America and that consequently, my entreaties for help with the rebuild might reach a wider audience here. I'm looking forward to being a part of the community.

I think there should be a bike version of Wheeler Dealers.  Dunno if you watch that in Canada though

An excellent idea, Mike - maybe they can get James May to host it! We don't get Wheeler Dealers in Canada but I watched it while working in the North Sea.

See you on the boards  8)

....The Br/Bl is a 12V feed from a fuse to the ignition switch.

Tail lamp and side lamp wiring is plain brown.

Hope this helps

It certainly does, Mike. Thanks very much! I'm still a little hazy on where to find the male bullet connector that connects to the empty brown/blue female connector in the original picture, though.

If I'm reading the below diagram correctly, the brown/blue plugs into a multiple black supply connector at one end, proceeds to the right through a br/bl connector to the fuse, where it changes from a brown/blue to a brown/white which then goes to the ignition switch. I checked my ignition switch and harness and they are as in the diagram - a 5 blade plug with 2 browns, a brown/white, a black and a red.

At the other end... what is the significance of the symbol that I outlined in red upper left?  Man.., wish I'd paid more attention in school... :-[

Best Regards,

PS: I guess with bikes of this age, there's not much that hasn't been discussed at one time or another -

I should have searched a liittle harder - thanks for your reply, Mike.

Welcome to the forum, and does that rocket 3 have ray gun exhaust's?

Hi Kevski & K2-K6 -

Yes, the R3 has raygun exhausts. The bike is all stock except for a Tri-Spark electronic ignition. She thinks she's the Queen of the Garage and is certainly the most temperamental of the residents. It's interesting, sometimes, to compare the philosophies of England and Japan when it came to building motorcycles  ;D
