Misc / Open / Stainless bolt blanks
« on: July 08, 2011, 11:12:26 AM »
Stainless steel nuts & bolts in CEI thread cost a bloody fortune. For now I have found a local supplier where I can order setscrews in Whitworth thread, I cut this off and re tap in CEI. They even come with the heads stamped so I can mirror polish these my self.

Does anyone know of an organisation who can supply 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 1/2 inch nut and bolt blanks in Whitworh spanner sizes in stainless steel please. Both A2 and A4 will be fine. Mind A2 is better cos it's cheaper.

Been a member of the US site for a good while now. Not a big poster, but I do chip in a bit.

I have a 77 K7. Bought it as a wreck in the early 90's. One of the previous 8 owners had made a lousy job of trying to convert it into an F2. Anyway got it running which meant a re- ring and tarted it up a bit. Used it as a daily ride for a few years, adding 20k to the 41k already recorded.

Now it is wearing K7 parts again. It has an easy life as a show bike and warm summer day/evening rides bike. And I love it.

Hi Pete

Frame numbers are good for identifying which model you have. Same way the engine number will tell you which motor you have fitted.

I say this because I bought my bike as a wreck at the right price and it turned out to be a K7 that someone had tried to convert into an F2.

Graeme's advice is good. Contact Swansea, get your question confirmed in writing. Then if you meet any jobsworths later on you have the answer in writing.

I know it's bad to be even slightly paranoid but cases of Swansea losing/denying peoples class a motorcycle entitlement forcing a retest at worst or loads of hassle at best are very well documented in the motorcycle press.

This caliper was only fitted to the K7, K8, F1 and the automatic. The calipers fitted to the 550's and 400 four are the same style but are smaller. They were rubbish when new and 30yrs of use won't have helped. Good used calipers are like hens teeth. This might have something to do with the fact that they aren't sided and a lot of people have decided that a double disc conversion is a great idea ::)

I believe you can still get the master cylinder repair kits. But be aware that the bores inside the cylinders wear, which means no amount of bleeding and/or repair kits will fix that.

Keep checking Silvers. a while back he had a few new calipers for the automatic in stock, people twigged (different part no same part) and they went quick.

Using a stainless piston is fine.

My brakes were a real bitch to sort out. Read 4 calipers and 3 mast cyls. You would have to be dead unlucky to have the same problems as me. keep at it, it will come good in the end ;)

Hi

Iv'e done 40thou on unleaded no probs whatsoever ;D.

We were told to run them on 2 star (remember that) from new back in the day. Mine and my mates got thrashed all over the country on 2 star, didn't seem to do any harm.

Hi Rob

The red stripe on your K7 should be bright red or post office red as you put it.
