You know the saying, 'The person who never made a mistake never made anything'.
Well done for finding the problem 👍

Chatting with Roo earlier when he suggested I used the old K style frame mounted ignition, I could make up a bracket if I can't find an original but there is a wiring difference - 5 wires on my F as opposed to 4 on a K switch.  Is there a wiring solution?

I figured it was time to bite the bullet and see what carburettors are all about!! I have stripped them ready for cleaning and was feeling quite pleased with myself when I saw a small spring that I hadn’t accounted for, it’s not from the internals for sure, I’m confident it is from the hardware on the outside somewhere and I’m sure I can figure that out.

What really stumped me was the diaphragms that I ordered from NRP, I realise that I have no idea how to change them, can they be done without cutting the plastic holding rings, I’m sure they aren’t called plastic holding rings but hopefully you know what I mean!!

Not sure if you have discussed this yet?  when re-installing the slides and diaphragms into the carbs the slides need to be put in the correct orientation with the 2 holes in the bottom toward the rear of the bike. I found out the hard way! if not correct the slide will "hammer" and after less then 25 miles it was all buggered and locked up and leaned one side out. Pipe immediately turned blue.

It would have been nice if Honda put a pin and a slot like almost all the other models.

Initially I plan to retain the standard points system then change over to electronic ignition if the bike  runs ok again.

It must have taken me an hour of checking the points gap, checking the F mark for the bulb to light up in the hope that my static timing is good enough on 1/4 & 2/3 can't believe how rusty I am at setting points. I will use my strobe when it's running.

It would be great if the two small pegs for opening the points with a screwdriver were even close to the recess on the other side of the contact breaker.
Presumably I could move the backing section to achieve this. I assume  some of this is linked to the brand of ponts fitted as well. There is no pitting on the contacts they look very new in terms of use.

We can all make mistakes - some are just not honest enough to own up for fear of looking foolish.

I famously rode my 400 on two cylinders on several journeys of popping & banging  as I had the plug leads on wrong.

My late father told me that the only people never make a mistakes - never do anything. ::) ::) ::)

😂😂🤭 You won’t be the first or last to do something silly! At least you’re willing to admit it too. Very satisfying to get it sorted too.

Well…

Don’t I feel like a silly sausage!!!

I counted the teeth on both sprockets, no problem there, I made sure the wheel was pushed as far forward as it could be, no problem there, I tried the cable tie, no joy. I tried joining the links on the sprocket so as there was as little play as possibly, no joy there either.

I had pretty much given up hope, sat back on the stool and admitted defeat and just sat staring at the bloomin back wheel and stupid chain that wouldn’t fit.

That’s when I saw it, staring me in the face. I’ve heard that nobody puts baby in the corner but someone should put me in the corner, with a big pointy hat!

The chain adjuster stopper was back to front!!!

Two minutes later the chain is on and fits and looks just dandy!!

Thanks for all the suggestions,
