I think you’re right. It’s not obvious in the photo but the lead was in a very shallow spiral path.

Worthwhile job on the coils! Having done three sets of coils now I had a couple of leads that just fell out of the ends of the moulding. Interesting how the lower coil in your pic the ht lead snakes in a s formation, must have been the end of a roll before moulding applied during moulding process?

I don't think a scotchbrite pad will be aggressive enough. May be wrong, but I would expect that to be a long job and lots of pads. 240 grit wet and dry, used dry, might be better, but the creases and corners will be tricky, if you try to get all the paint off. I found the dremel, used with the flexible extension head and a range of brass brushes, worked quickly, got into nooks and crannies and didn't damage the alloy. I then went over once with some wet and dry to key it. Took me 2 to 3 hours to do and another hour to brush clear all the little brass tines off the floor. You do go through the brass brushes in that job.

Thanks all, probably go for the previously mentioned ones, which don’t come with plugs, but are already being used by Ted

My general experience with Chinese parts and tools is not good.

The exception is well known brands with a good reputation.

But as they say you pays your money and takes your choice......

The rear mudguard, grab rail and some fittings have gone to Ashford Chroming who have quoted an 8 week turnaround which isn't too bad. Can't make my mind up whether to have the front mudguard replated as well or get an aftermarket replacement as it’s probably going to be more cost effective. However I’m not convinced that the aftermarket items will be to the same standard as a replated original mudguard.

My rear wheel arrived on Friday from Full Circle Wheel Building and I’ve put a K82 on, just waiting for the sprocket and brake plates which are at the powder coaters.

I’ve turned my attention to the electrics and I’ve started “Ashes fix” on the coils which are in good condition although the HT leads were in a terrible state. As mentioned in the procedure the outer insulation of each HT lead was hard and two of the inner conductors had broken. The coils cleaned up well and the leads were exposed in no time at all using a rasp. Now I know that the coils are good I’ll go ahead and order some epoxy from RS.

I only had the head and cylinder block off, so I couldn't put it in an oven!

I took it back to bare metal with brass brushes in a Dremel.
Thanks for posting this. I am thinking of doing something similar with my 550 rebuild. I plan to rebuild the top end but not the bottom end which seems fairly sound apart from the paint. Do you have any tips for removing the old paint other than using a dremel & brass brushes? I was thinking of using a Scotchbrite pad or wheel to prep the surface before etch primer.

Desperately Seeking!! / CB400/4 Breather Guides
« Last post by Laverda Dave on April 16, 2024, 07:36:28 PM »
Does anyone have a couple of the breather guides for sale?
These are the wire guides located on the main stand pivot tube pinch bolts. They hold the fuel breathers/overflows from the carburettors to prevent them rubbing on the chain etc.
I borrowed a clip and bought a piece of stainless steel to make a couple but admitted defeat after a couple of attempts as it became too difficult to hold, heat and bend on my home made jig.
I have tried DSS, CMSNL and 400/4 bits without any success.
Condition is unimportant as I can get them replated if I need to.
Cheers
Dave
