Title: Rim Strip or Duct Tape
Post by: Andych on July 24, 2019, 08:37:10 AM
Finally getting around to starting on the CB400 and gathering a few items I know I will need.. including tyres and tubes... but... I was wondering what are peoples preference... Rim Strips sized correctly (hard to find apparently) of Heavy Duty Duct tape?

I am not sure I trust Duct tape that much... well mabey the reinforced stuff would be OK

18" Rim tapes in stock @ Vintage Motorcycle Tyres of Beaulieu, £2 each plus VAT. Good service, this is where i bought mine along with Dunlop K81 tyres (TT100 lookalikes). If you're in the mood for a nice journey, I think you will find they even offer a fitting service, phone call first ay?  I found the rear tyre an absolute B=====d to fit because the standard rim has a very shallow dish, cost me a second inner tube and professional help! Have fun. Regards, Michael.

"Big Whoopsie"!!! When all else fails, as a last resort, read the instructions, (or member's address!). On my way back to The Sunnyside Home for The Terminally Bewildered, I happened to notice that Vintage Tyres use UPS for worldwide deliveries. Am I eligible for forgiveness?

The cost of freight would outweigh the low initial cost I think but thanks for the info..
Yes Julie, I thought it was Rim Tape but it seems they like to call them Rim strips down here.. goodness knows why.
I have found the Michelin ones here but they are to suit 2.15 - 3" which is OK for the rear... maybe I will check out the other ones after all or just set myself to using Duct Tape.

I've always used rim tapes. They only cover the centre section of the rim and cover the spoke ends so the ones you've found should be fine on both wheels.

Whew... that is good as the shipping cost for the 2 Rim tapes and 2 Michelin Inner tubes was going to be 43 Pound or all up $123 plus GST and clearance here... that wasnt going to happen lol

My local no longer stocks rim tapes so I had to resort to gaffer tape.  Plenty of baby dust on the tube helped it go on without pinching.

Well at least the rim tapes are sorted. I needed some seat lock bits so I ordered from Silvers and added the rim tapes and a seat cover as well.
Now according to their site as long as it is under 2kg and less than 60 quid international postage is 8 pound. It may weigh more than 2kg with the seat cover but I will see.  Either way the rim tapes were not going to add much to overall weight.
Now all I need to do is get the Yamaha to Roller stage so I can take it off the lift and throw the 400 up.

Thanks all for the advice etc... my Order from Silvers was shipped overnight (for me at least) with delivery being 8 Pound (I need to find the shortcut for the correct symbol at some stage).
So now I just wait and start cleaning up the Old Girl.

Whether it still exists or not,  there's an postal agreement from commonwealth times that any bulk post arriving in UK  is delivered for £1 item so maybe that's in place to Australia?  It's how stuff is handled here arriving from Hong Kong as I understand it.  And why you get so much trade via there for items that effectively have a competitive advantage in delivery cost.
