Thanks den, one last question, the large diameter pipe from the lower rear crankcase were does that connect t? In your photograph it looks as if it's going to the oil tank, is that right?

Spitfire thanks for the prompt reply, I see by the pictures that the tube from the airbox goes to the connector on the top of the breather unit, does the pipe from the rocker box cover connect to the other lower connector on the breather unit?
I see that the very lowest connector on the bottom of the breather unit has a loose pipe which is the drain. It appears that the hose from the lower rear crankcase connects to the lower stub on the oil tank, is that right?
I may run without this if as you say the earlier models did not have it fitted, I'm not too bothered by deviating a little from standard spec so long as it will run OK.
Thanks again, Fatal.

CB750 / 750F1 breather plumbing
« on: August 17, 2008, 02:17:16 PM »
my 1976 750F1 has a breather chamber (part no: 17262-392-00) situated next to the battery and rear of the air filter. There appears to be a number of pipes that attach to this unit. I  have identified the drain on the bottom , the top connector seems to attach to the top of the air filter box, but there is another pipe just above the drain hose, I dont know how long it should be, or where it connects to.
It is so long since I did anything to this bike, and even longer since I pulled it apart I now seem to be having a number of senior moments.

I'm thinking that the pipe may connect to the crankcase breather at the rear bottom of the crankcase, if so the breather pipe that leaves by way of the rear of the rocker cover then just hangs loose down by the swing arm, am I correct? I somehow doubt it.
My other concern is that the sponge breather element has perished with age and is now unavailable, any suggestions for a replacement?

Is it feasible to discard the breather element unit, seal off the connector on top of the air filter box, but then where do the crankcase breather tubes route to. I'll be most obliged for some help on this issue as plumbing is not my forte. ???

The only colours I've seen in the UK were yellow and burgundy, I have a 1976 Honda brochure they don't list any other colours, I can't comment on other years.

CB750 / tyre size ?
« on: December 06, 2007, 05:27:38 PM »
I'm considering fitting Dunlop TT100 K81 tyres to my F1 when the rebuild is finished. Whats the best size; 4.25 x 18 rear, and 4.10 x 19 front, or should I go smaller ie; 3.60 x 19 front and 4.10 x 18 rear  ??? As the standard size is 4.00 x 18 rear, and 3.25 x 19 front, is the gearing affected, will the speedo be way out?

Thanks dave I forgot about mersey motorcycles, only been in a couple of times, it's what a bike shop should be like, I hate all the new look modern Gin Palaces. I go past MM  on a regular basis, I'll call in for a chat.

Hi Peewee, it's been a long time since I've been to Geoff davenports shop, I didn't know he was still trading. I tried the chroming place in Jackson street a few years ago, but the guy I spoke to didn't seem too keen on doing motorcycle parts, so I took stuff to some chap in Altrincham, but I don't think he's trading now, however someone on this site has reccommended a chromers in Oldham which I'll check out.
This is my first Jap bike restoration, the others have been old BMWs (R100S, R80ST, R80/7 and a BSA C11G). I have used Central wheel services in Birmingham in the past but they are expensive but do an excellent job, but it's too far to travel there now. In the past business took me to Brum on a regular basis so it wasn't a problem fetching and carrying the gear.
I try to keep cost down, I don't aim for a concours type finish (they were never that good when new from the factory) I agree totally about a usable classic, "RIDE 'EM, DON'T HIDE 'EM". although I try to keep to reasonable originality I will use stainless steel fasteners often allen head bolts, braided steel brake hose, and non original exhausts, this F1 is getting a Motad 4-1

CB750 / wheelbuilder
« on: November 02, 2007, 09:50:05 PM »
Can anyone reccommend a good and preferably cheap wheelbuilder in the merseyside/south lancashire area ( I live near to St Helens). I am considering having the wheel rims rechromed and stainless steel spokes laced in. I know replacement rims are available but I'm under the impression rechroming may be cheaper.
??? What have people done to their wheel hubs? polished, powder coated? I'm wondering about using silver Hammerite smooth, any suggestions gratefully accepted.

D'ohhh I've just had another look, I've not set the bearing cup far enough in the stem  ;D, (been suffering from a virul infection so not been thinking straight) all sorted now. I must pay more attention  :-[

Thanks Den, I got the bearings from Wemoto. Looking at your photos It seems as if I haven't quite got the bearing down far enough, your rubber seal appears to be more compressed, but the washer on yours looks the same. I think perhaps there was a little overspray of paint at the bottom of the stem. I'll take the bearing off and double check everything. I'll probably need to reorder a bearing as it looks a right tw*t to get off!

CB750 / Taper roller bearings
« on: October 22, 2007, 06:20:33 PM »
I finally got around to fitting taper roller steering head bearings to my F1, but the steering stop lugs are a bit too low to engage with the stop on the head.  ??? I assume this is because of the large thick washer that is fitted at the bottom of the stem, and then the rubber dust seal. The original bottom washer is very thin, and I'm thinking that if I refit a standard size (thin) washer instead of the very thick one then all should be tickety boo.

Has anyone had similar problems when fitting these bearing kits?

P.S. this restoration project seems to be taking forever!
