Has anyone got a 3rd gear dog for a CB400F for sale?  ;D

CB350/400 / Mineral oil and change routine.
« on: February 26, 2024, 07:58:42 PM »
The 10W40 mineral oil we are supposed to use I gather has a much shorter life than synthetic oils, but we do have rather large sumps. How often do you change your oil?

CB350/400 / Painting underside of rear fender
« on: February 16, 2024, 08:29:06 PM »
My rear fender has a lot of blemishes appearing under it now, so sometime soon I'll be taking it out for a good sprucing up. Is it a bad idea to paint beneath it, how should I best go about the job? :)

CB350/400 / Pilot light mounting screws
« on: February 15, 2024, 10:58:03 AM »
Going down the cobbled streets of ye olde Wapping I noticed my pilot light console was wobbling about, a closer look was called for. Recently I renovated parts of my front end that had me dismantle the clocks and I forgot the two screws that secure the pilot light (idiot!) console to the baseplate the clocks fix to.  ::)  I've searched high and low for those screws to no avail. Anyone know what size they are so I can replace without paying through the nose to CMSL?

Misc / Open / The price of idiot light cases
« on: February 07, 2024, 08:36:44 PM »
I screwed the lid of my Pilot Light Console back on and a bit too tight as well, that awful sound of cracking had me stop and just in time, nothing I couldn't fix thank gawd. I just went on a hunt for the two plastic cases the lights sit in and I was astonished. None to be found on DSS and another place ask for £95.oo  :o  ... a guy could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas for that much,  ;D or get new shock absorbers instead etc etc. How the hell can two bits of plastic with a sticker on cost that much?

CB350/400 / Seizing horseshoes
« on: February 02, 2024, 02:39:39 AM »
Much is said of CB400F cam tensioner arms (horseshoes) seizing up, but I don't recall anything being said about repairing them. I'm soon to find out if my own is truly seized up but will this mean I need to buy a new one, or can I get it fixed?

CB350/400 / Elusive springs!
« on: February 01, 2024, 12:11:32 AM »
I'm gathering up the gaskets, seals and cam system parts I want ahead of a planned rebuild in a couple of months, but something I just can't find anywhere, not even on CMSL is the two springs for the cam bar ( bits 53 & 54 in the image. After 46 years I feel they ought to be changed, but is that likely to be necessary? Strange that they are two sizes, does one fit over the other? Anyone know where or how to get them if they really are needed?
Should new piston rings be fitted as a matter of default while the engine is this open? Leaking gaskets is the main reason for this rebuild.

CB350/400 / Starting in cold weather
« on: December 26, 2023, 05:15:03 PM »
My bike lives outside under a bike cover. I've always had a bit of an issue starting the engine first thing in very cold weather, today no exception,  ::) I had to use the starter button for a few minutes before she finally decided to fire up. Is this just a norm with the CB400F or am I missing something?

Misc / Open / What would have happened?
« on: November 26, 2023, 06:16:33 PM »
I must have had a senior moment when I was reassembling my carbs recently, I had forgotten to replace the tube part of a needle jet on the most left hand carb, unless it really was the garage it had been to recently(?)  :o
I ended up breaking down with fuel starvation miles from home and had to be rescued. Now I've replaced the part with a bit of help from Steve at 400bits because they item seldom features in carb repair kits or on it's own. (see image)
I wonder if one of the great experts on here can tell me what would have been happening in the run up to conking out and not starting again?  ;D

CB350/400 / Checking the dip stick
« on: October 09, 2023, 10:01:39 AM »
*Swallows pride* The manual it seems shows this for the 350 and it says oil level should be up to the upper level of the dip sticks measuring area, however it looks different on the 400/4 and I've always settled for the halfway mark, right or wrong?

CB350/400 / Flooding carb..
« on: October 05, 2023, 03:25:20 AM »
One of my carbs has been flooding, ie the overflow leaking. This I can stop by tapping the thing with a spanner a while, but what should I really be doing?

CB350/400 / Starter motor not starting engine.
« on: September 23, 2023, 10:16:52 AM »
My starter motor is sounding ok in itself when I push the button and I know the battery is ok, but it isn't starting the engine. For that I'm relying on the kick start  which is working fine. Any ideas?

CB350/400 / Bike isn't recharging the battery
« on: September 11, 2023, 05:39:55 PM »
My bike isn't recharging the battery, is the rectifier or alternator the most likely culprit?
