CB350/400 / Valve guides and vapour blast cleaning...
« on: May 22, 2021, 01:38:49 PM »
I'm about ready to send my cases and sundry covers away for vapour blast cleaning and I'm wondering if I need to remove the valve guides or not..???
I'm of the belief that vapour blasting is not abrasive (like sand, bead or soda blasting) and therefore wouldn't damage them..??
More than happy too be schooled on this one...

CB350/400 / Helicoil and crankcase thread repair... opinions..!!
« on: May 06, 2021, 02:33:25 AM »
GDay forum folk,

Cracking on with rebuilding a CB400F engine and have managed to purchase the requisite tools (micrometer and appropriate torque wrench) so that I can obtain the measurements to determine the correct bearing shells needed.
As you may have seen on a previous thread one of the crankcase bolts was swapped out with a head stud and topped off with a domed nut.
The previous owner probably did this because they had stripped the thread and the head stud was able to reach the last remaining threads...

So, if I am correct in what Ive read on this and other small 4 forums I need to torque down the cases so I can get a close measurement of the bearing ID and cross reference that with the crankshaft journal measurements to work out which bearing shell is required, however that is hard to do when one of the bolts is not quite right.

The question I have, is one of technical expertise regarding the use of helicoils in this situation. Even double stacking helicoils if need be.
Is this considered an appropriate fix to take or is it not worth it because of the bolts location and operating stress..???

Once agian thank for the feedback.

Regards...

Trevor

CB350/400 / Crank Journal Bearing condition...
« on: April 17, 2021, 09:04:53 AM »
I bought a basket case 75 CB400 four and am in the process of stripping it down for a rebuild.
I'm not one for doing things half arsed like the previous owner did but I don't want to have to spend any more money than necessary.
Anyway, I'm down to the point where Ive split the cases and would like folks opinion as to the crank journal bearings.
Can these bearing halves be reused or should I replace them.
So as to not drown the would be reader in pictures I've posted the lower ones so as to get feedback.
