Title: Engine Bearing Journals
Post by: Brett72 on December 02, 2020, 06:29:33 PM
Evening all. What are the general thoughts on using the original bearing journals? i have stripped the engine down and they look good. Would you just plastigauge them when reassembling or go for new?

Interesting question.

On one hand you only should ever intend to be in there once, so why wouldn't you, a new set of bearings should now outlast you, given how long the old ones lasted.

On the other hand, as I know from experience, however expensive a set of shells from Japan look now, wait until you add P&P, Duty, Vat  etc, it will make your eyes water.

Plastigauge then decide, I reckon. Also you have to select the right colour shells if you replace, but there's people here to help you with that. You can also have fun looking for the near invisible scratched on codes on the crank cheeks, from when they measured the crank journals in the factory.

I would only consider re-using top case No.4 but I would plastigauge it first and inspect it with a magnifying glass for scoring and wear. The others look beyond saving but worth plastigauge test just to see how much they have worn.
To be honest though if it was my engine and I found bearings like that after a full strip I would replace them and especially on a 750. Hopefully DSS or CMSNL have the colours you need.
