CB500/550 / Stopping hoses “welding” to petcocks
« on: October 09, 2019, 07:35:07 AM »
Rejuvenating and old post maybe but anyone any tips for stopping the carb hoses from seemingly welding themselves to the petcock petcock outlet tubes. Seems they will slide on easily and the be an absolute bastard to get off a few weeks later.

I think I tried Vaseline but that wasn’t much help once.

I guess I need some lubricant that does not get eaten away by petrol

CB500/550 / Interesting K0 at DK

Looks a nice buy, not a super early K0 but looks all original and a running bike. Would need to change those exhausts ideally though

CB500/550 / running like a dog part III
« on: October 01, 2019, 08:08:29 PM »
right now completely at a loss what to do next about this

Ht leads checked
Plugs checked
Plug caps checked
carbs as clean as a bloody operating theatre
float levels ok
no fuel starvation
Head completely overhauled by machine shop (valves checked, lapped in and head skimmed)
Boyer system tested at Boyer and no issues
All wiring to Boyer system checked and all connectors replaced
Have run with Boyer system connected direct to battery and with spare leads from stator plate (ie all loom connections taken out of the equation)

Still getting this afterfire on 1 and 2 and quite frankly I am running out of ideas

It is intermittent, seems to get worse as engine warms and often in initial start get a really loud afterfire

I am sure this is something stupid and obvious but I cannot trace this damn fault

All ideas (however crazy) welcome

CB500/550 / Petcock Maybe Stupid ?
« on: September 20, 2019, 07:13:59 AM »
May sound a daft question but as I am still no further with solving my running issues I am turning to other possible causes

When I have the tank on the bench and open the fuel tap I get flow from only one outlet but if I block one outlet it comes out of the other and vice versa

Is this normal as I would have expected fuel to flow from both outlets pretty equally

This is a virtually new replacement petcock by the way. I have taken it apart and can’t figure out how the internal drilling’s go ie how it is supposed to work

Anyone got a spare tank on a bench they can test to see if this is normal?

CB500/550 / Round terminals K0 connectors- replacements
« on: September 17, 2019, 08:27:27 AM »
I am trying to source replacement round terminals for the K0 connector blocks. Big Al suggested Spark Moto in the USA who think they may have some but are asking for dimensions/photos of the terminals.

As I am way with work for a while does anyone have these dimensions or any pics of these terminals

CB500/550 / Stripped thread on barrel - solutions?
« on: September 11, 2019, 09:54:52 AM »
I think I have stripped the thread on the small bolt on the rear of the head (the one under the 1 in the picture)

Would it be OK do folks think to just put a longer bolt through with a nut? I realise this is not "original" but would it be OK for now

Right and proper  is to Helicoil it of course but much bigger pain so cold do another time

CB500/550 / Running like a dog Part II
« on: September 09, 2019, 06:13:44 PM »
Starting a new thread as things have changed

Had bike at local mechanic who is convinced the afterfiring on 1 and 2 is being caused by a valve issue.

So I am going to pull the head again but could use some help with steps or procedures I should work through to to check this out

I did do a compression test and this seemed ok but my mechanic said really need to do a leakdown test but problem is I don’t have a compressor. He also said that only sure way to do a leakdown anyway is to take the tapper cover off so nothing is pressing the valves

CB500/550 / Getting stuff of chrome
« on: August 27, 2019, 08:17:05 AM »
I have some bad marks on my No 1 exhaust header where my leather key fob was touching and has kind of melted some gunk on to the chrome which has baked itself on well and truly

I have tried a number of solvents but can shift it

I have some pretty aggressive paint stripper I was going to try to see if that softens it but not sure of what effect paint stripper may have on the chrome

Also any other bright ideas

CB500/550 / Inlet manifold clamps

Fitted new OEM inlet rubbers and bought new clamps from DSS but they are not clamping tight

Anyone ever used jubilee clips or can recommend any alternative?

CB500/550 / Electrical help
« on: August 19, 2019, 06:03:33 PM »
Am doing some testing relating to my misfiring issue and I need to run the bike using the Boyer system connected direct to the battery and no battery charging

What wires can I safely disconnect from the rectifier or regulator so I have no battery charging going on.  Haynes manual suggests never to run with the red/white wire feeding the battery from the rectifier

CB500/550 / Regulator Rectifier Replacement
« on: August 19, 2019, 08:49:55 AM »
Am looking to replace the original units(s) with modern kit.

I am sure this question has been asked many times so apologies for any repeat !!

I seem to remember someone posting about a unit that just plugged straight in to the existing connector

I found this on a USA site but cant find an equivalent in UK

https://4into1.com/regulator-rectifier-honda-cb350f-cb400f-cb500-cb550-cb750/

There are lots on fleabay and seem to vary a lot in price but this seems OK

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Regulator-Rectifier-HN-047-for-Honda-CB-400-Four-F2-500-K-550-750/352726351323?epid=601960239&hash=item522020fddb:g:0OUAAOSwhV1ci-0u

ALso Wemoto have a what seems to be same unit but much pricier

https://www.wemoto.com/bikes/honda/cb_500_four_k0/71/picture/regulator_rectifier_-_by_electrex

I am assuming with these units connection as follows

In the existing 5 way connector:_The yellow wires connect to the existing 3 field coil yellow wires and the green (earth) and red (battery feed) to exisiing green and red

The remaining white and black leads are then the field coil connections that go where the existing regulator plugs in. I assume the green existing earth wire from the existing regulator is simply not needed

CB500/550 / Still Running like a dog!!!
« on: August 05, 2019, 11:45:31 AM »
OK now at wits end completely. New head gasket fitted (OEM), carbs fully overhauled and check of all pilot circuits etc and still running like a dog.

Checked for air leaks around carb rubbers etc

Symptoms are it starts up fine and sounds fine but as engine gets warm I get a afterfire in exhausts 1 and 2 and it will just not pull at all.

Am beginning to wonder if I have an ignition problem. The bike was fitted with a full Boyer kit including micro coils 18 months ago.

Anyway here is my question.

As I understand it the BOyer system fires all four cylinders so if this is correct I should be able to swap plug leads 1 and 2 over to 3 and 4 and vice versa.  If I then get the problem on cylinders 3 and 4 instead of 1 and 2 it points to either a plug cap or lead or other ignition issue.

A further question is if I can just swap over the yellow and blue wires on the Boyer stator plate and will this have the same effect as swapping over the plug leads
