hi all,it will soon be christmas,so is it time to start planning for ride outs? meetings ??
april has a nice rideout for us near/in Wales
http://www.ridecymru.com/
and then the Welsh Rally
http://www.clivemcc.co.uk/wnrforms.php
this is early may time,I did it for the first time this year, and it was great fun,
then,a visit to David Silver Museum,I know it will be like returning lots of spares back to were they were purchased from, but it
should be fun, worth noting, the museum is NOT open on sundays !! ,
if we can sort out a date, booking B&B and camping can be arranged ,
then the BIG one,how about the Classic/Manx TT,
what do you all think ??
-
Sounds a good idea John, a bit of forward planning. I'm up for the DSS museum visit (not sure about him indoors, he may boycott it ;D ;D ;D ;D) but I'm sure he would come along for the ride. Boston Bike Night, 6th July 2017 will definitely be on my list again also.
-
Dont forget the Isle of Man Classic TT end of August. Anybody thinking of going (as a previous post) will need to book the hotel about now really. Then the sailing about Christmas time or you wont be going. We usually pay our hotel bill on leaving and rebook for the following year at the same time. It really is that busy.

John.
Classic TT 2017 is from 19th August to 1st September, that includes all of practice week as well. We are going over Thursday 24th Aug until Saturday 2nd Sept, and we are staying at the Fernleigh Hotel in Peel. We don't stay in Douglas anymore as its died off in the last 10 years with nothing to do at night.
Peel is much more lively at night with things like Beach Races and live bands. MCN also does a bike night at the Creek Hotel, and there are plenty of pubs/chippies/cafes/restaurants. Its not a cheap week though, this year with ferries/hotel/petrol/spending money it cost me £900. But that said, we don't hold off on the spending, and it can be done way cheaper if camping and cooking yourself etc. We also sometimes pay for seated viewing but you don't have to.
Hope that helps.
-
thanks Roy,I found a B&B for around £400 for 8 nights,
but the Steam packet is proving a pain,I guess its to early for them to have schedules up and running,
just have to smile sweetly ,and hope my other half is well enough to leave her on her own,

You won't be able to book the ferry until about February.

Thanks for the Heads Up on the bookings John, never been able to book it this early before. Will get it booked over the weekend. You did well on the price it cost us £206 last year That said we do go out from Liverpool and back to Heysham to get the good sailing times. We can do either as we live about in the middle of the two. Will let you know what it costs me. Cheers.

Thanks partly to this thread, I'm thinking of taking the Honda to the Manx and Classic TT, however it's not long after we get back from a trip to Canada, so it'll be just me and only for race days. The websites aren't a lot of help for actual race dates, they just give the dates for the whole fortnight.
Its a long while since I went to the Manx, in 1997 and I was in it, on a CB600 in the newcomers race. I notice now they keep the newcomers seperate from the experienced riders, as I dawdled round with my orange bib on, particularly in the mountain mist, I always worried that I would be in the way of someone going really quickly.
Looking at the 2016 schedule it looks like I could see all the Classic stuff if I did a long weekend, Friday to Monday, subject to the dodgy Manx weather, of course, so maybe come back Tuesday pm. I'm not that bothered about watching modern stuff race.
-
Booked now for the Classic TT, going for an extended weekend, out Friday 25th August, back on Wednesday 30th, via Liverpool, which is good for me.
On my own, staying B&B in a farmhouse near Glen Mona, between Ramsey and Laxey. All being well I'll be taking the CB750, I hope I can meet some of you over there!
-
I'm booked from Liverpool on the 24th august, back on 3rd sept.
staying just outside Peel at a B&B,
should be my 500,
-
Anyone going to the Bristol Classis Motorcycle Show in Shepton Mallet tomorrow? I'll be going on the BMW as my 400 is in dry dock.
-
Mike, I was aiming on going to Shepton Mallet on the Blackbird but having suffered a water leak in the bathroom during the week I'll have my head under the bath all day fitting new taps :(. Have fun, if you come across anyone selling new CB250RS silencers let me know. A company called Classic Bike spares who make exhausts for brit bikes are now making them for early Japanese bikes. They have some nice silencers for the early CB twins. They make the headers for the RSA and should be making the silencers for springtime. I think they are at the show this weekend.
The Oxford meet up looks like a great idea.
Dave
-
Didn't see your reply until after I got back. I did see a stand with a bloke that fabricates tanks and pipes/silencers. I didn't have a close look but his work looks a good standard.
I'm getting too old for all riding in the cold weather malarkey, I'm still trying to get warm hours later with a hot water bottle down my back.
Hope your plasterboard isn't too damaged.
-
My accommodation for the Manx has gone tits up, and the tourist board have been useless (they find me something then ring back and say it was a mistake - website not updated), so it looks like I'm camping somewhere.
-
well,I have entered the Welsh National Rally
any one else want to join me ??

how about early june ? out of normal holiday season, good chance of fine weather ?
-
Not sure about early June John. I'm in Prague until 4th June with me girlfriends and then me and him indoors are just re planning riding our bikes to Croatia ( which should have happened last year but didn't due to the builders starting early!!!). That trip will be in June also but not sure exactly when yet........I will let you know when I know ::) ::)

last night I was out at Bromyard Conquest Theatre to listen to a talk by NATHAN MILLWARD,
he rode a Honda CT110 105cc ex Aussie postie bike from Australia to UK,and after New York to Seatle and onwards to Alaska,
http://www.nathanmillward.com/
if you get the chance to see him,I would go,well worth it,
he is also riding "Dorothy" as he calls the "postie" bike from Lands End to John O'groats ,starting 9am,May 13th,he suggests it will take a week, camping overnight,
I am tempted to try to get the Little RD125 ready in time,it would be ideal,
The Honda will be used for the Welsh National Rally on 6th May,and I hope to get to Cheddar Gorge on may 29th to show the RD to
the YAM club,
anyone fancy running a small Honda end to end ?? come and have a little ride out !!
check his website,and short video

Can anyone advise about camping at the Manx GP?
The tourist board turned out to be as useful as a chocolate fireguard, twice booking me into B&Bs that were full, they just hadn't updated their status with the tourist board. It seems everywhere really is chokka, so camping it is - do I need to prebook, and where's best?
Walking distance of a pub would be handy, my days of riding round the IOM half cut are over, I hope. 8)
-
I used the "Homestay"
even last september it was difficult,
all I can suggest is e-mailing all the campsites you can find, and ask,

do any of you remember bike writer Dave Minton ?
to me he is up there with LJK Setright,Vic Willoughby etc,
he lives fairly locally and was giving a talk on his career of riding and writing about motorcycles,
well worth a £5 entrance, and a free glass of wine plus nibbles,
a really nice night out,
have a read of one of his last columns ,what do you think ??
http://www.realclassic.co.uk/opinionfiles/opinion03072200.html
-
I remember Dave Minton from the days of going to Slater's in Bromyard when they were the Laverda importer in the 1970's. He was usually to be found there testing bikes for the magazines and, I think lived almost next to the premises for a few years.
Such a pity that he decided to retire from journalism recently!

I know Richard very well, and used to attend his Laverda weekend BBQ at a local pub, they never minded I was on the Honda

Thanks Rob, booked at the Ballamoar campsite online, see you in the Raven for a pint or two! Look for a Candy Blue Green CB750 K1 on site, will you be on the bike in your avatar?
Last time I was in the Raven we were retrieving a broken down rider at the Manx many years ago, he had a knack of breaking down near a pub, and blagging free pints as his leathers conveniently had no pockets. He was propping the bar up and three sheets to the wind by the time we turned up in the van after the roads had opened. After a couple of pints (it would have been rude not to) we raced another rider in his van back to Onchan via the (very handy from Ballaugh) back roads, then the TT course from near Windy Corner. When we stopped a cloud of smoke went past because the van's brakes were on fire!
-
as we are all going to the IOM Classic,we will have to arrange a meet !!

MrD: Yes I'll be on that bike, between 22 and 26 August, and YES drinks are in order.
John: A SOHC.co meet up will be required just as you suggest, but as paulbaker1954 has discovered we all seem to be afraid of commitment, so I think any meet up is best planned no more than a week ahead :D. Count me in though.

-
I am staying B&B in Peel,
have a think,a nice pub with food, sometime not a race day would be better, maybe a ride/parade of sohc around the track ???
meanwhile, there is the meet near Matlock on july 2nd ,
hopefully it will be as succesful as the june 2014 meet at Sammy Millers
-
Sounds like a plan, I'm there Friday pm to Wednesday, as time is limited, and I only want to see the Classic races.
-
lovely weekend ,
had a ride out around the Brecon Beacons,
great to be nice and warm !!,and out in the fresh air !!
-
I am at the IOM Classic for 10 days so count me in for the meet up. Were staying in a hotel on the promenade at Peel, just by the bowling green.

This wekend we are off to the East Leeds Lion rally, at Squires Cafe Bar.
Last year I went out for the day to Tadcaster on the Saturday, which was when I relised my mains were knocking. When I got back I found out I'd also missed the best Classic bike award judging, so a double whammy.
This year they have busses to Otley, a Lion Rally tradition, where we decend on the pubs and charity shops for fancy dress(es).
-
Just got back from the rally, much cleaning of the bike and drying of gear needed as the trip home was in the pouring rain.
Unlike last year's rally when the mains started to knock, the CB750 went very smoothly, one unexplained big cough on the M62, which made me wonder of something had shorted in the wet, but not like the tale of a Trident owner I heard over the weekend, of 70 in the wet being fine, 80 would drive water into the electrics hard enough to lose one cylinder, but if you'd got to 90 first it would lose two. As a former owner of a few British bikes myself, we reminisced over a beer about Joe Lucas, the true Prince of Darkness.
I need to leave some wiggle room with the packing, as I had to find room on the trip home for not one, but two trophies - Best Classic and Best Bike Overall :D I don't know if I got them because she looks so shiny and new, or because someone appreciates the attention to detail with the number 8 bolts and the correct, rare as unicorn poo, (unless you know people on this board) cylinder damper rubbers, but I suspect it's the former. I saw the poster for the NABD Rally that we're going to next month, my bike's on that too!
-
Well done on the trophies, I bet your well chuffed. Attention to detail goes a long way (not that any of my bikes would win any prize of any sort). What with yourself and Rich (RGP750) winning a prize a couple of weeks ago, looks like we are getting some exceptional bikes owned / built / restored by forum members....
Bloody good I reckon.
-
Well done from me as well. I only ever won one trophy (for best Jap bike) because the bad weather put off the show ponies from going on the run.
-
Like to see a picture of the finished bike. You don't have what we call numbers 8 bolts on a K1, I call them second generation CB 750 bolts.
-
What with yourself and Rich (RGP750) winning a prize a couple of weeks ago
This proves that sucess in shows actually comes from using the correct grey dampening pucks between the fins, as I got mine from Rich, who must use them too ;D
Like to see a picture of the finished bike.
When the sun comes out and I have time, I will get her out in the countryside and take some decent pictures for the gallery with the good camera, in the meantime here's a couple I took at home yesterday after a good clean. I regret not matt blacking the stainless hoses, too blingy for me, I'll do them when she's having an oil change anyway. They are a pain to get on and off (very rigid).

anyone around in North Wales on saturday ? May 6th
I am doing the Welsh National Rally,
start near Welshpool, then via various waypoints to Ruthin,(Doofs Cafe) to Anglesea, then Caernarvon airport,on to Harlech,
a few more checks and then back to Welshpool,
any sohc's about? give me a calland we could meet up
-
Off to the NABD Rally near Knutsford, Cheshire this weekend, for bikes, bands and comedy.
I was going to take the Harley, I got it out on Wednesday, put it in gear and ......nothing. Then I saw the broken drive belt on the drive. £240 for a new one, now on order from HD :( . Upside is it didn't go in John O Groats last summer or somewhere up there with no mobile signal, and hey, it lasted 12 years, longer than the crank pin.
So its out with the CB750 again. :)
-
Yamaha day at Ace Cafe this Sunday. Thought you'd be there too John ;)

Yamaha day at Ace Cafe this Sunday. Thought you'd be there too John ;)
the little RD is together, and looking good,BUT will not run over 50% throttle, seems to lean ?? but not sure,it spins up tp 6K rpm on half throttle ,but open them any more and it chokes !
carbs rebuilt using KY-0160 kit from NRP,
head scratching time !!!
enjoy your weekends out !!
-
back from the WNR 2017,
well it was cold, damp and fun !!!!!
no sunshine, misty drizzle, but the roads never seemed wet !!
previous days weather forecast, claimed 10% chance of showers !!! fat chance,!!
so after booking B & B for friday night,a very welcoming place to stay, very hospitable, good evening meal, great breakfast !! well I need building up !! for the day ahead !!
started around 8.20 am,original plan go for top award ,Platignum, with 15 villages /clues and 3 manned checks + 10 general questions to be answers at each !
from start via 2 villages to near Bala ,then up to Ruthin, this s were I started to loose time, knowing the road numbers I needed and the area to find villages at times up to 5 mls off the main road began to get tricky !!,I had hassles in Denbiegh, went through the centre 3 times !!,but onwards, getting villages and clues filled it,on to Bests-y-coed and north on the A5,this is a truely brilliant biker road, very little traffic, dry by this time ,wonderful corners ,straights and scenary !!,brilliant !! so off over the Menie bridge to Anglesea,
this became a MAJOR hiccup, poor road signs,,jeez I must have wasted over an hour trying to find Bethel !!,
it very tricky reading a map,as the pages blow away as you open it at 60+ mph !!,(grin-joke)
this made me very late ,making it impossible to get all the visits before the check at Harlech closed at 6pm,so a nice ride back via
Caernarvon Airport, and south along Llanberis pass to Beddgelart and Port Madoc, fill up with fuel, knowing I could get home on a tankful
from there, open garages late on saturday nights are VERY rare !!
so back to Welshpool, finished at 8.20 pm,
gave the score card in,couldn't get the award I wanted, but they gave me a GOLD ,for distance, number of places visited etc,
followed by a warming meal,a few laughs ,swopped hard luck stories, finally got home about 10.20pm,
a few stats
mileage when I left home 63680
start of WMR 63750
Finish 64101
mileage at home 64166
total riding time for rally,as near as 12 hours as dammit,
rally mileage 351,
total saturday miles 417,
the bike seemed to do between 10 and 12 mls per litre,
ran well all day,
I got a few aches after !! mainly shoulders !!!
now,if anyone want to join me for next year,do a sohc team ??
pic from friday night
I didn't take any more,as the phone charger cable got damaged when I shut the end in the seat lock !!
-
Bloody hell John, you really do go for it big time. Sounds like you had a great time, good on you.....you put some of us 'youngsters' to shame ;D ;D
-
I thought you'd gone all hi tech with a sat nav on your handlebars instead of paper maps. Mine jew, it's best to have both so you can see the big picture.
Glad you enjoyed it all.
-
I didn't use the sat-nav.just reading maps and what remains of my memory,
I don't think I can plan a route with 18 way points to return to the start !!,I will use the nav when I go to the Crick show, and also when
I go to IOM and Liverpool docks,
but maybe next time I might use the little Yamaha,
that would be a task
would love to see those big BMW posers match that !!!!
-
time to go out mid-week to the biker nites
this was on the A40 between Ross-on-Wye and Glos,
Billy from this Forum was there with his CB750 K6,this well modded 400,a couple of aircooled RD Yams,in Kenny Robert yellow ,

can't fit a clubs on the bike !!!

Don't worry. just borrow Triggers baseball bat !!!. RAF Coningsby, home of the Dambusters, and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight are only 2 miles from here. There were 4 Spitfires flying over the garden today, looked and sounded wonderful.

After an age fettling bloody carburettors, finally getting some miles in. Took the boy out for a 70 mile round trip and stopped at the Harrold & Odell country park for an ice cream. No other bikes there, sorry.
[attach=1]
The 500 never missed a beat (bar when I had to put it on reserve 8)) and has plenty of grunt. Low down power seems weak but rolling on the throttle while at 80 she picks up with gusto. Never had one before so guess this is standard.
-
My 550 is gutless low down and no amount of fiddling seems to improve it so I assume its normal too.
-
After rebuilding and refitting the engine, I took it for its MOT. Passed, obviously, but has an oil leak which appears to come from the sump. After removing, resealing and refitting the sump, it still leaks. The leak seems to come from the LH side. I had a look at the oil pump but I couldn't see anything. I'll have another look sometime, probably the oil pump O rings as they were a bit hard.
It's not major but I don't want it behaving like an old British bike.
-
Mike, if its leaking under the cover and the oil pressure switch is OK it will be the oil pump cover O ring for which you use the Goldwing part posted elswhere
-
I haven't established where it's leaking from yet, as the oil pump looked clean. I'll use my pressurising -the - crankcase dodge when I get a bit of time and report back.
-
Put my 400 in to a bike show at Caerphilly Castle. There were about 20 bikes, more bikes than visitors due to the total lack of publicity. We enjoyed it though.
-
Looks like a great day out in a dramatic setting, nice one Mike.

Just got back from Matlock Bath. It was a nice ride out, a lot of bikes there but to be honest not a lot that really interested me in the world of two wheels. Mostly modern superbikes and Harleys, kind of strange that my 91 Zephyr was the fourth oldest bike there, beaten by a Beezer, a Trumpet and a Norton. Not one single SOHC did I see while I was there. Only took a couple of general pictures as I knew Mrs.Wife would have liked to have gone but was looking after her Dad.
-
I was there yesterday! (sorry no bike pictures) with the air-cooled RD club annual event. It was absolutely rammed with bikes and a music festival in full swing.First time I've visited Matlock Bath and was really impressed. Lovely little spot and I think I must have counted about 10 chip shops! Even had a ride on the cable car. Wonderful

I was there with a friend (me on my CB750 K2 and him on a CB1100 EX). We held out until just before 12:00 p.m. and then left to call into a local show on the way home. I counted only ten 1970's bikes at the busiest time whilst there (from 08:00 - 12:00).
All a far cry from a few years ago when there was not a parking space to be found after 09:30 and you could hardly see the bikes past the number of people dressed in period clothing!
I think that we have both decided to drop this event from our calendars for the future, it certainly doesn't justify a 220 mile round trip of which 30 or so are in the thick of London traffic.
-
So true. I think you can see from the images how few bikes were there. Only 40 miles away from me so not such a sacrifice but was very disappointed with the turn out, especially when it was such a big event a few years ago as you point out. Sorry to miss you, you must have been leaving as we arrived.
Peter

Missed this one, went to the Raven for breakfast a few weeks back but not on the bike as the builders have been in since May building an extension on the house and the bikes have been stranded in the garage by a large scaffold blocking the door, but got the F1 out yesterday and went for a spin. At least I now have a new garage for the bikes to live in.
I will have to get up to the Ponderosa once the decorating slows down a bit, but the breakfast at the Raven is better.
Cheers
Dennis

Yes John, it is British but I think that is a 're import'. Nice raffle prize, don't drink it all before you ride home
-
Why do you say it's a yankee bike? Am I missing something?

Thoughtful prize, if you run low on petrol going home you can pour it in your tank! Please don't ride home with it stuffed in your jacket ??? ???

No Mike your not missing anything but lots of those bikes went to USA and then have been reimported. It makes no difference to me, I think its a stunning bike, I will never own one or ride one but I just think that and the BSA Goldstar DBD34 clubman are magnificent bikes.

The Honda car is closer to bikes than generally realised, think it shares half it's engine with the nc700 road bikes.
Quite a few Vincent went to Oz as well, the engine designer being of that country, Phil Irving. Alot of race stuff out there now and still casting new engines as far as I know.
That bear is very thick to need a spoon for it :) ;)

I used to have a Suzuki GT550 like the one above, but with 4LS drum brakes, the colour was close to Honda's candy gold. It used to get bunged up around town, on the open road it would make huge clouds of blue smoke as it burned the oil in the exhausts then go like a rocket! All fun and games until the front drum brake got too hot, then I could sail through red lights with the lever to the bar. :o
At the Manx I never thought to get a picture of one of the Manx Ices I had, so here are some motorbikes instead, click on the thumbnail.

Why would you want to drink heated beer in the garden?
-
Can't stand heated beer.

Can't stand heated beer.
I was to polite to question how they heated the beer,or bear ,
maybe it helped it brew?
the fun of posting about food to to help those that don't like cooking,it provided a list of bike meet venues with food,
ideal if you want to ride your bikes after work ,and save time by not having to cook dinner !!
see,its a service we provide,to get you out on the bikes !!
grins =)))))))

Out and about at one of our local pubs, The Red Lion at Revesby. Saw this lovely old lorry, restored, manufactured 1963. I quite fancy it for going out doing the shopping ;D[attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3]

You sure Julie? Flat out at 35-40 Crash complicated Scammel 3 lever gearbox and iffy brakes. Apart from that great and the mirrors are so small you can't see the queue behind you!
-

used to Very heavy hauliers from Newport,South Wales called Wynns,
they had some great trucks/tractor units
PS, speaking from memory, the Red Lion serves a nice pint

It was the boot space that I liked Bryan, plenty of room in there for all my shopping ;D. Just looked on DVLA and they have it down at 11,000cc, and 24,390kg revenue weight, would that be right?

Gardner Diesel engine....made in my home town, Patricroft, Eccles. I was offered an Engineering Apprenticeship there in 1966. Turned them down as I felt it was such a big place that I would just be another number ! No regrets though.
They made the best Diesel engines in the world (at the time), but one silly strike after another led the Family that owned it close it down.
-
11 litre 6 pot diesel that runs flat out at 1800 rpm and at a temperature low enough any heater is useless and yes when it was working about 25 ton would be about it, I am old enough to remember the "Upgrade" to 32 ton.
Due to a "quirk" in the injection system it was possible to start them backwards when things got a bit tired
-
well,
with the sunshine today,I went for a potter arround,I used the little RD as I didn't want salty spray on the CB,
both previously tucked away in the garage ,keeping dry with chargers connected !!
my main excuse is that I am having a new hip on wednesday,so I don't expect to swing my leg over till end of february,
-
Ouch! Good luck with it John, but once it's done and healed things should be much better for you.
-
Good luck with op John - mate of mine has had both hips done and he's as good as new now!
-
Little RD looks beautiful John.
Good luck from me also for your impending operation.
I don't expect to get my leg over for a while either.
Happy Christmas, Peter.
