CB500/550 / Brake caliper piston
« on: April 09, 2021, 02:31:37 PM »
I'm just about to replace the piston on my fron brake and notice there are Honda ones and pattern ones.  Does anyone know if there is any difference?

Thanks

I'm thinking about this bike, wondering if it's a good price?

CB500/550 / Wheel rebuilding
« on: July 29, 2020, 02:10:57 PM »
After looking at Woody928's 550 rebuild story, I started to worry about my wheels.  They are just like his and every now and again I wirebrush them and the paint the insides, usually when I need a new tyre, but I'm wondering now whether it is time to think about having them rebuilt.  The front spokes are quite rusty and because front tyres last so long I can't remember what it is like on the inside.  The outside of the rim is pretty rusty.

Does anyone here know a good place to have it done and how much should I expect to pay?

Should I go for stainless, aluminium or the period correct chrome plated rims?  Problem with chrome plated steel rims is they might rust again fairly quickly.  I imagine the hole where the spoke goes through is the weak spot.

Sorry to ask, I'm in the dark a bit here, I've just ridden them in the past but in the last couple of years my bike has suddenly become quite old. ( a bit like me )

CB500/550 / Why is this so expensive?
« on: June 24, 2020, 09:53:47 PM »
I'm not criticising this bike, just hoping someone who knows more than me about cafe racers can educate me and tell me why things like this attract such high prices?  It makes me tempted to convert my bike.  Perhaps there is something I'm missing?

CB500/550 / Alternative tanks
« on: June 11, 2020, 02:47:52 PM »
Just to say, growing impatient at not being able to ride, I ordered a 750K1 tank and it came in the post today and it fits really well on the 500.  I just had to grind a small bit off the mountings on the frame, 2 or 3mm each side.  The length is perfect, no adjustments needed to the saddle.

I'm sharing this info in case anyone else has this problem as it is seemingly getting impossible to find 500K tanks now.  I think people have been buying them to restore.  My longer term plan is to weld the 500 tank then put it back on and then sell the 750 tank.  Knowing me it could well take years to get that organised.  :)

Luckily, it was already painted black so no need to do anything else.

CB500/550 / Just to get it running again...
« on: June 01, 2020, 02:15:30 PM »
Will 750K1 tank fit on just until I can find the right one?

The fuel tap is on the wrong sid but it seems to be the same type of tap fitting.

CB500/550 / Tank repair
« on: May 15, 2020, 06:07:48 PM »
I have decided to braze my tank.

I burnt off some paint and in the archaelogical layers, you can see where the original stripe was just under 4cm from top of badge holder, which is a lot lower down than some people reproduce when they paint tanks, that is the ones you see on ebay...

SOHC Singles & Twins / CB350K draining battery
« on: April 01, 2020, 09:49:19 AM »
When I leave my bike overnight it drains the battery unless I disconnect it.   It's so annoying, I was thinking of putting a switch in but that's not ideal.  Any ideas?

Other Bikes / Triumph T3 900
« on: March 26, 2020, 08:36:47 PM »
I have been looking at one of these as they seem to have come down to affordable prices.  Does anyone have experience of them, from what I have read they seem pretty practical?

CB500/550 / Petrol Tank
« on: March 25, 2020, 05:35:29 PM »
Very shocked to find that after 46 year's service the petrol tank has developed a rust hole behind the Honda badge.  I thought I would get the bike going after a winter rest, and given that we can't go anywhere seemed like a good way to spend time.  Does anyone know where I might find a reasonable/useable replacement that won't cost silly money, assuming people are allowed to sell such things at the moment with this crisis and all that.  I have thought about patching but always found this to be unreliable in the long term.

I suspect that alcohol in the fuel might be to blame, does tend to attract water.

CB500/550 / Electronic ignition
« on: July 25, 2019, 04:19:33 PM »
With the difficulty in trying to find decent quality replacement contact breaker points, I am considering going electronic.

Do we have any recommendations for systems that are affordable and reliable?  This is a very new concept for me, I have only ever used points before.

CB500/550 / Clutch
« on: July 15, 2019, 01:38:39 PM »
Sorry to bring this up again but I am going to try replacing my clutch plates and springs.  I have tried everything else.  When I go over a bump in the road the clutch starts to slip and overtaking things is a bit of a gamble, too much throttle too quickly and off goes the clutch.  It is very annoying.

The reason I bring it up here is that I have seen so many conflicting views about what to do.  I have looked at Barnett plates but some say they leave residues in the oil, and some people think the heavy duty springs make the clutch too heavy.

What do we think?

CB500/550 / Inner Tubes
« on: July 05, 2019, 09:52:02 AM »
Yesterday the back tyre went down suddenly, luckily on a straight bit of road and not in a corner but as I was doing about 60 it was a bit scary.

Looking at the tyre, I can't find anything that might have caused the puncture and also the inner tube has split.  I don't know whether the split happened while I was coming to a stop or if it was the cause of the sudden deflation.

The rubber of the tube seems quite thin and wonder if my tyre people put in a cheap tube last time.

With this in mind, do we have an opinion about which tubes are good?  Being made nervous by the incident, I was thinking about using a heavy duty type, like Dunlop or Michelin which I think people usually use for motocross?

CB500/550 / CB500/4 Speedometer
« on: July 03, 2019, 09:51:46 AM »
The odometer on my bike has stopped working.   The speed bit is OK but for some reason the miles don't change.  Is there an easy fix for this or will I need to look for a second hand unit?  (would have to be faded and battered not to stand out too much)

The base appears to be pressed together and not easy to undo.
