CB500/550 / Part exchange
« on: June 10, 2019, 03:44:44 PM »
I am going to look at a 1970 Triumph Trophy TR6R with a view to a possible part exchange for my CB500.  Just wanted to canvass opinion about how much I should hold out for for the Honda.  My bike is untidy but in good order and well maintained with MOTs going back to 1995 and lowish mileage.  I know it won't be top dollar but at the same time I'm not really up to date with bike prices.

CB500/550 / Brake lever not returning properly
« on: May 01, 2019, 12:33:54 PM »
My front brake is being annoying, the lever does not come all the way back when released.   The brake works well and does not at all feel spongey.  My question is whether or not it is worth trying to rebuild the master cylinder, are they serviceable and, if so, are the correct parts available to buy?

Failing that, which are the best aftermarket master cylinders available in people's experience?

CB500/550 / Plug caps
« on: January 08, 2019, 10:05:32 AM »
I'm just in the process of putting on my new coils and looking at the very sorry state of the plug caps at the other end.  They are a really mixed bunch and the ones on cylinder 2,3 don't reach properly and only just hang on.  Currently, from left to right sitting in the bike, I have three right angle NGK and one straight long NGK caps.  Before I order new ones I wonder if anyone can enlighten me regarding the correct configuration.

Many thanks,
Steve

CB500/550 / Plug Caps
« on: September 23, 2018, 04:48:00 PM »
I am about to buy some new sparking plug caps.  Please can someone tell me which ones go where, i.e. straight ones and right angle ones.  Mine have always been wrong and only just reach on no.3 cylinder.

CB500/550 / Clutch annoyance
« on: August 06, 2018, 04:16:03 PM »
Having made my bike run properly again I now notice that when I try to accelerate hard to overtake things the clutch very often starts slipping.  This is really annoying and is the one thing that puts me off this machine.  I have searched through the various articles about this but cannot find a definitive answer.

I notice that my bike is running the original clutch and it operates very smoothly under normal circumstances engaging and disengaging properly but when I push the bike hard in third or fourth gear it will slip and also if I go over a bump in the road at higher speeds in top gear.  Is there an upgrade that actually works such as different plates or springs?  I saw an article here about 450 plates and cb77 springs but that didn't seem conclusive.....

CB500/550 / Missfire at low revs
« on: July 22, 2018, 05:32:43 PM »
Not sure what the problem is, runs very badly, popping and misfiring and chuffing back through the carbs at low revs, drops to to 3 or 2 cylinders momentarily, but when I open up and keep above about 4000rpm it runs like a dream.  I thought it was the points because when these aftermarket points get old the timing goes all over the place.  However, installed a good used genuine set and reset ignition timing and still has exactly the same problem.

Does anyone have any ideas?

CB500/550 / Squeaking sound
« on: May 30, 2018, 06:03:36 PM »
oh dear, just arrived home and in the last mile the top end has started making a squeaking sound.  I switched off the engine and kicked over with ignition off and still makes sound.  I think I will have to take the top off and have a look before I do any more damage.  So ends 23 years of continuous faithfull service.

Does anyone have a spare top end for a 500?

Misc / Open / V5C
« on: January 11, 2018, 12:53:45 PM »
My son is buying a moped which comes with a spare parts bike which has no v5.  Once I have taken off good parts I want to scrap the rest.  Is this a problem, not having V5 for parts bike.  The seller says I don't have to take the second bike if I don't want it.  Not sure what to do.

CB500/550 / Strange whine from front of bike
« on: November 25, 2017, 10:38:17 AM »
Approaching a local town in the pouring rain after about a fifteen mile ride, a terrible grinding whine started to come from the front end.  I touched the brake momentarily to see if it was coming from the disk, no change.  Eventually, after much pointless inspection, I worked out it was coming from the speedo and after a thump it went away for a moment but then soon came back.

I'm only relating this story in case it happens to anyone else, it was very worrying because I had recently had the front end to pieces to replace the mudguard and thought maybe I had forgotten to tighten something.

Other Bikes / 1972 CB350K Carbs
« on: September 03, 2017, 04:56:55 PM »
I tried to ask this question on Hondatwins but had no reply.  Has anyone here fitted 32mm MK1 Amal Concentrics to a CB250/350k or similar?

My original carbs need a complete overhaul and being CV type have always been a bit flakey, but I have a really good pair of Amals which will bolt straight on.  The carbs came with some home made manifolds, which makes me wonder if they came off a CB racer?

Other Bikes / CB350K drains battery
« on: July 26, 2017, 05:12:02 PM »
Does anyone know why the battery runs flat when the bike is left for a week?  I should point out that I haven't left anything switched on.  All electrical things seem to work normally but if I leave the bike even for a few days, I have to disconnect the battery.

Recently, I forgot about this problem, left the bike for a fortnight and now the battery won't hold charge at all.

CB500/550 / The trouble with chrome is..
« on: July 16, 2017, 07:11:39 PM »
..having fitted a lovely shiny front mudguard (the old one had serious holes) the front wheel now looks really crap.  Before, when the whole front end was crappy, it was fine.

Now I either have to clean up the rest of the bike, shudders, or have to distress the new mudguard  ;D

CB500/550 / Fork gaiters
« on: July 09, 2017, 08:51:00 AM »
Hello all.  Perfect weather for riding but my bike is off the road because I decided to replace the front mudguard.

Foolishly, I tried to replace the mudgaurd with the wheel on and managed to stick the brake hose clip through the new fork gaiter causing it to tear.  I ordered some more after-market gaiters from David Silver and when they arrived yesterday decided to take off the forks and do the job properly and replace mudguard at same time.

However, I was shocked to discover that the gaiters I bought in May this year have started to perish and split already, which to be honest is pretty poor.  I know they are not the original Honda part but they should still be serviceable, so I am going to send these new gaiters back, I don't want the same thing to happen again.

I'm going to speak to Silver tomorrow, I'll let you know what happens.  In the meantime it's a lovely sunny day again and no bike to ride.

CB500/550 / Chrome
« on: May 05, 2017, 09:20:30 AM »
Sadly, the front mudguard now has so many holes it has become beyond usefulness even by my standards.

Luckily, I managed to find a replacement on ebay for £35 which is pretty good I think. (wondering if anyone here was the seller?) The only problem is, it's so good it will look too shiny on my bike.  I might have to get the Brasso out and shine up the other bits to match!
