CB500/550 / Chrome
« on: May 05, 2017, 09:20:30 AM »
Sadly, the front mudguard now has so many holes it has become beyond usefulness even by my standards.

Luckily, I managed to find a replacement on ebay for £35 which is pretty good I think. (wondering if anyone here was the seller?) The only problem is, it's so good it will look too shiny on my bike.  I might have to get the Brasso out and shine up the other bits to match!

CB500/550 / Fork Gaiters
« on: April 23, 2017, 09:58:10 AM »
The sun was shining yesterday so took the bike to town to pick up some groceries, such excitement, and upon my return I decided it was about time to replace my fork gaiters because they had started to perish and I had been meaning to do it for ages, finally resorting to gaffer tape.

I had been dreading this job, but, stripping down the forks was much easier than I remembered and it all went pretty smoothly and quickly.

However, there is one problem which I can see I encountered the first time I put these on 22yrs ago; the top part of the rubber does not attach firmly to the headlamp bracket and keeps popping out.  Last time I had to use a jubilee clip as you can see and sadly have had to resort to the same method again.  Is there a better way of doing this or is it a common fault?

CB500/550 / Battery - where to buy?
« on: February 24, 2017, 08:30:47 AM »
Hi

The battery on my 500 hasn't lasted well this time and the previous one from the same shop was faulty and so, consequently, I'm thinking of changing supplier.

Does anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks,

Other Bikes / Crank cases
« on: July 12, 2016, 01:10:29 PM »
Very simple question, are Honda crank cases machined as a pair or are they able to be mixed?, i.e top crank case from one engine and the bottom one from another?

Other Bikes / CB350K I don't believe it!
« on: July 09, 2016, 05:25:41 PM »
It's only taken me twenty one years to get round to getting this bike going again.
Rebuilt engine, new brakes front and rear, wheel bearings, replaced silencers etc.......

After doing some tests today   I went for a ride through some fields, had it running for about half an hour, adjusted the tick-over and clutch and generally doing the things that you can only really tweak properly during a proper run, when, it started making a noise from the left hand crankcase which doesn't sound terribly good at all.  I think the second hand crank has started to fail.  The big ends on these things cannot be repaired, once they fail that's it and it's really hard to find spares.  I do have another crank but I'm left feeling rather despondent and wondering why I bothered in the first place.  I should have just put it on ebay as a 'barn find'.

Now I have to decide whether to bother stripping it down and finding out what's happened or just chuck it in the corner of the workshop for another twenty years.  >:(

Other Bikes / Headlamp compatibility
« on: June 28, 2016, 09:04:26 AM »
I have discovered that Honda CB350K has an odd sized headlamp, the same size as 400/4 in fact.  Does anyone know if it is also the same size as CB250N?

Misc / Open / cb250/350 k clutch adjuster/lifter
« on: April 27, 2016, 07:18:56 PM »
My CB350 clutch adjuster is so worn it will not lift the clutch enough to stop it dragging and replacements are almost impossible to find or very expensive.  Is this part fitted to any other bike or has anyone successfully modified one to make it work when very worn?

This is probably a question for Ash?

Misc / Open / Motorcycle Auctions
« on: April 21, 2016, 08:10:59 AM »
Has anyone here bought bikes at auction (not online) and if so was it worthwhile and a good experience/ value etc.

Any thoughts welcome as I am thinking about buying another bike for a project and notice that ebay prices are generally quite high as ebay is available to all 24/7.

Tricks & Tips / Home made paddock stand
« on: April 06, 2016, 11:40:20 AM »
In the spirit of 'make do and mend' I have made my own stand for the bike to help me remove the front wheel using an old cheese grater and some elastic bands...

it starts in an upright position then using the long parts as a lever one can pull back towards the rear of the bike and elevate into position.

As the bike has no centre stand of it's own this device is an absolute boon.

CB500/550 / Is this price realistic?
« on: March 22, 2016, 10:44:11 AM »
I've just seen this on ebay, very similar to mine except mine is running and has full MOT.  I just wondered because I thought a bike like that would only be worth about £750 at the most.

Misc / Open / Helmets
« on: March 08, 2016, 12:04:18 PM »
Well my beloved Davida open face helmet is getting a bit old now and should be replaced soon.  As much as I love the freedom of open face helmets I am aware that I am getting older and stiffer and slower and should really be looking at the added protection of a full face helmet to compensate for my delayed reactions and generally realising that, contrary to what I thought in my twenties, I am not invincible.

With this in mind, does anyone have any suggestions for and experience of good full face helmets that do not look too modern.

Thanks

CB500/550 / Chromium Plating
« on: March 01, 2016, 09:57:16 AM »
I have a spare very solid dent free front mudguard from an early 500/4 (has holes for front number plate).  The rust is quite light, not penetrating, but the chrome has gone completely.  How much hassle is involved in preparing for re-chroming and is it worth it?  My current mudguard has become somewhat like a colander and I have to put gaffer tape on it to stop water flying up at the front.

I have been following a few on ebay but the price seems to go quite a lot higher than I want to pay and they are often not that good.

CB500/550 / first ride of 2016
« on: February 04, 2016, 02:49:41 PM »
Well, it isn't raining today so I thought I would take the bike out as I was a little worried about not starting it up since November.  After pulling away the tarpaulin, turning on the petrol, it started third kick, very pleased.

I feel so inspired I might even treat the bike to a new set of rubber gaiters for the front forks.
