CB500/550 / Clutch slip
« on: June 13, 2014, 02:33:58 PM »
has anyone successfully cured the dreaded clutch slip and if so how? mine is bugging me, I can't seem to get up to a good speed without it being a problem, especially if I go over a bump in the road; gear changes I can usually manage but road bumps are frequent around here.

I have thought about stronger springs.  If so, does anyone know a good supplier.

Surely the racing ones don't have this problem and they have even more BHP to contend with.

I had a go on a California III yesterday and must say, although rather heavy, once rolling was surprisingly nimble and the low down torque was phenomenal.  Much more fun than my friend's Harley.

SOHC disk just seemd to be the right thing.  I don't know what I was thinking but it worked and was used on Channel 5.

CB500/550 / Master Cylinder
« on: May 09, 2014, 07:58:00 PM »
This is very annoying and has never happened before. The master cylinder is leaking, I can't work out from where.  On a ride today I lost braking on the front.

Are these serviceable, i.e. using new rubbers, presuming they might be available?

I see there are replacement master cylinders available from Dave Silver.  Has anyone tried one?

All advice welcome.

CB500/550 / Saddle
« on: April 19, 2014, 01:43:07 PM »
Many years ago, I bought an aftermarket saddle which has a plastic base.   The cover on mine has now fallen apart and it is time to seek a replacement.  Not feeling inclined to spend my precious evenings messing about with a cover I was looking for a complete unit but was shocked to see that Dave Silvers want £125 for one, almost as much as my bike is worth!

Does anyone know where I can buy a complete aftermarket saddle, say for around £35?  Am I asking the impossible?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

CB500/550 / it works!
« on: April 14, 2014, 03:10:15 PM »
15 months under a tarp in the garden; oil change plus filter, fresh fuel, drained carbs, charged battery, started third kick, it even ticks over by itself.  Must be a Honda.

New chain and sprocket set, headlamp, rear tyre and brake shoes.  I just need to put some filler in the front mudguard, a new hole has appeared but the rest is still solid.  Scrub that, gaffa tape will do for now.

I just need to bleed the front brake, rub over with an oily cloth and should be ready for MOT.

CB500/550 / brake shoes
« on: March 10, 2014, 03:02:47 PM »
I fitted new brake shoes at the weekend, fitted being the operative word.  The pattern ones from Dave Silver Spares do not fit properly and I had to file a small amount of aluminium off each one in order to fit into the brake cam and also to have enough gap to get split pin to go through.  Not very good.

CB500/550 / ....ready for spring..hopefully
« on: January 24, 2014, 10:29:35 AM »
well, after my overly ambitious idea of getting bike going for winter I have decided to fix all of those annoying things that had built up through neglect.

New brake shoes and oil filter arrived.  Chain and sprockets on order.  New tyre and headlamp fitted, just hope it will start after sitting under a tarp for a year.

CB500/550 / Ready for winter...
« on: September 05, 2013, 02:32:58 PM »
Hopefully, I will be getting the bike back on the road this month, just in time for winter.  I can't believe that during the best summer for many years my bike has been sitting under a tarpaulin!

Misc / Open / Carol Nash Microdot
« on: May 19, 2013, 05:16:24 PM »
I foolishly followed the advice given me by Carol Nash and applied their microdot stuff to the parts of my bike.  12 months later I now have horrible dried gluey stuff all over my bike and it is far from invisible.

Has anyone else had this stuff sent to them.  Is it just me doing it badly or have others had this problem?

CB500/550 / Headlamp
« on: May 16, 2013, 08:27:36 AM »
Hello everyone.  My headlamp reflector has suddenly corroded really badly and I need a replacement.  Does anyone know where I can find the cheapest alternative.  I found this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321010689431?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

but I don't know if they are any good.   Second hand parts seem to be foolishly expensive at the moment, I thought I would be able to pick one up for a fiver but discovered I was living in the past, as always!

Any views would be appreciated.

Best,

Steve

1972 CB350, been sitting outside unstarted since last August, drained carbs, kicked over, fired, started second kick.  Amazing!

CB500/550 / MOT
« on: March 28, 2012, 02:30:58 PM »
Just come back from MOT land with a new certificate.......huzzah!  No problems, apart from loose connection on main beam, which I fixed outside the bike shop.

While I was there I saw a very shiny CB400/4 which is not such a common sight these days.  Sadly, the owner was not in attendance.  Anyone on here?

CB500/550 / Help, I've over-wintered my bike by mistake....
« on: March 07, 2012, 09:15:13 AM »
Due to the pressures of trying to record, mix and master two albums (due for release in March and April) I haven't had the time to get my bike ready for it's MOT and it has been sitting in my workshop since the end of October.   Lack of use is bad news for bikes and being in the workshop means it is out of sight.  During it's rest I have managed to knock into it and snap the number plate and at one point it almost disappeared as things started to pile upon and around it, proving that bikes are just not meant to be inside.  Once I can clear the junk sitting between the bike and the door to the outside I should hopefully be able to drag it out into the sunshine and see just how bad things really are.  Please wish me luck.

CB500/550 / Old petrol
« on: November 18, 2011, 09:43:05 AM »
For the first time in years, my bike is resting in the workshop because the swing arm bushes are wobbly and the MOT ran out at the end of October.

How long can they stand before the fuel starts to gum up the carbs?

I keep meaning to start it up but never seem to get the time, let alone fixing the swing arm.  The weather just hasn't been pleasant for riding and chainsawing, welding the Land Rover and recording in the studio seems to eat up the whole day.
