CB500/550 / Swing arm bearing refurbishment
« on: August 01, 2011, 08:44:09 AM »
My swingarm seems to be developing play and MOT is coming up.

Is it necessary to replace the swing arm pivot collar as well as the bushes?

Also, does anyone know of a cheaper supplier than David Silver because, using all the parts, it looks like the job is going to cost over a hundred pounds which seems a shocking and extraordinary sum to pay.

Other Bikes / CB350K Front forks
« on: June 30, 2011, 12:40:08 PM »
....are rubbish.  I just filled mine with oil as I imagined their lack of damping could have been due to the fact that I had rebuilt them many years ago but never refilled them.  When I took it for a test ride up a rough track I hit a bump and it bottomed out badly and I thought my shoulder joints were going to explode.

Anyway, with this in mind I refilled the forks with oil and it hardly has made any difference.  I think they simply must be worn out.  I neglected to measure anything when I took it apart but suspect the damper has worn down.

Does anyone have any cheap suggestions for repair to get through an MOT?  In the past I have tried engine oil but this makes them too stiff.

CB500/550 / Paint
« on: May 19, 2011, 09:18:50 AM »
What paint would members recommend for a brake caliper?

(for those who are wondering about this radical departure from my usual rust and hammerite stand point, I am tidying a caliper for sale, not to put on my bike ;D)

Has anyone successfully removed a fused bleed nipple from a brake caliper and, if so, how is it done?

Sadly I can't afford it, but if I could I would ride it just like that.

CB500/550 / finned points cover
« on: April 27, 2011, 06:14:13 PM »
I used to have finned after-market points and rocker covers.  In a fit of madness I threw them in the scrap bin many years ago and now I would like some more.  Does anyone know who made them?

CB500/550 / Riding a CB500/4
« on: April 15, 2011, 11:26:07 AM »
What a joy!  I went to the shop ( the long way!) on my bike last night and it was wonderful, bike handling and running really well, no insects around to get in the eyes and virtually no traffic.  Navigating those lovely twisting corners I reminded myself of what a stunning acheivement of engineering the 500/4 is; superp power to weight ratio, extremely smooth engine, great handling and fast enough still to be unnerving on country roads.

It also reminded me that it had been a while since I had given the bike an inspection, as I held on tightly, hoping nothing would fall off or give way.

The summer is very nearly here!

CB500/550 / Wet plug leads
« on: February 17, 2011, 08:34:20 AM »
Does anyone have problems in the wet and if so has anyone come up with a good answer?

Basically, when my bike is wet it takes it about three or four miles to get running on all cylinders.  It is very frustrating.

Is there a good route for the HT leads which helps them keep away from places where they can short circuit?

When I was keeping the bike inside there was no problem but at the moment the ground is so waterlogged I can't get round to the back to put the bike in.  I only just managed to get out last time, she's not the best off-roader!

CB500/550 / First ride since the snow.

I took the bike out today for the first time since the snow.  Very muddy and wet but great fun once it stopped raining.

CB500/550 / Bikes standing..
« on: December 19, 2010, 03:01:03 PM »
Just to say that due to the recent cold spell my bike has been standing idle for about a month now.  I started it  and engaged first gear to move it and there was quite a snatch from the clutch the first time as the plates had started to bind.  It just goes to show that regular running is really worthwhile, if it had been standing much longer the clutch may completely have bound up meaning a strip down to free it.  Luckily, however, the engine started perfectly.

CB500/550 / Rear brake pedal
« on: December 07, 2010, 03:14:41 PM »
I have two different kinds of rear brake pedal, one is round in cross section and the other is flat.  Does anyone know to which models these apply?

Also, I have headlamp brackets with indicator mountings on.  Are these a later type?

CB500/550 / Reversed brake caliper.
« on: November 22, 2010, 09:53:07 AM »
Has anyone tried turning their forks round so that the front brake caliper is on the opposite side and behind the fork leg?

On the American site there is a magazine article which suggests doing this.  I wondered if anyone has experienced the difference.  I am about to fit new gaitors so need to remove my forks anyway.  Maybe I should try this while it is apart?

(I was very pleased to see that the article suggests throwing away the bulky and weighty 4-4 system and replace with lightweight and stylish 4-1 system  ;))
