Title: #78 Main jets
Post by: mr wilkes on October 19, 2017, 06:42:30 PM
Hi again,

Looking for a UK supplier for some #78 main jets for my carbs. Thought I had sourced some but I can only get #75's from my local supplier.

Any help would be really appreciated.

For models with the 649A carbs (instead of 627B) ment for most European markets (France and UK the only exceptions). These models also had an airduct over the airfilterbox instead of the gaze net. In tests they performed equally well as the models that had #100 jets and no cover. Airscrews are supposed to be one turn out +/- 1/8 and needles in 3rd (middle) position. Why? Answer: we don't know. It's a mystery. Differences in quality of petrol? Some have hinted that Germany had regulations on maximum air intake noise. Below the result that shows my bike (with #78 and cover) was capable to reach its theoretical top speed of 185 km/h on the dyno stand.

CB500 four, My carbs are 649A type which run #78 main jets  "Thanks for the good info Delta" I have looked on 4into1.com but they are out of stock and I would prefer a UK-European supplier if possible.

They don't have the stamped numbers like the genuine Honda ones so I'm guessing they are either out of a kit or replica ones, either way they will do the job :D Thanks again Trigger.

Delta, can you help me with identify which model my bike is? I was looking at the service and part manuals that you posted on another post and its thrown some doubt on what model my bike is! I thought it is a K2 but my bike has the ignition key unit  between the clocks, not on the left side of the frame? the clocks are the later larger ones tilted towards the rider, also the petcock is the same as on the cb550.

I wrote to Honda years ago for an age related document and the year of manufacture is 1976.

Mr Wilkes, your bike - by numbers and by year - is definitely a CB500K2-ED. ED means European direct sales. Probably this was 'grey' or parallel import, as we call it. The ignition key unit between the clocks must have been done by a PO. Your model or should I say our model, as I own one myself, share many parts with the CB550K2 that was marketed in 1976 in the US: the tank striping for instance but also the front legs. Our CB500K2-ED is different however from the CB500K2-A that was marketed in 1973 in the US. I bet instead of two greasing nipples on the side, you have one nipple underneath the swing arm and the five stage rear shocks if the originals are still there. Unfortunately neither CMSNL nor DS have documentation on this model. You've probably found the correct Parts List at Honda4Fun. BTW, as far as I know, that site is the only one that has it. Honda4Fun also offers good and detailed info here: scroll down http://www.honda4fun.com/home/faq/generali/111-cb500-differenze-k0-k1-k2  Useful info is also found in this site where you can enter a parts number: http://www.motogrid.com/OEMpartfinder.htm?aribrand=HOM No need to fill in 'Model', just the partsnumber. After you've clicked 'Search' and then 'select model', you'll be presented a list of models, that had that same part. Although it doesn't cover all 'area codes', it can be useful. It helped me quite a few times. And you can always ask me ofcourse. The CB500K2 (ED, F, G) came in three different colors: Excel black (see pic below), Candy sapphire blue and Candy garnet brown.

Thankyou Delta, some very good info there. Your right about the single grease nipple on the swing arm and the five settings on the rear shocks,  I'm still a little stumped with the ignition barrel though, it looks like it's standard fitment as the wiring harness appears to be intact and the key for the ignition also fits the seat lock. I will post a pic once I figure out  how to compress the file.

I like that. More sensible place for the ignition switch

PO must have moved it from under the tank to between the clocks. Why? I don't know. Not smart 'cause now water can get in there.

A bit of a mess, I have found one on ebay but I'm not 100% sure its the same. good news is the bracket for it is still intact.

I have enlarged the pic as far as I can and I don't think its the correct bracket but it is listed as an ignition barrel so you may have no comeback on it. I have one I will be using in the future and if you want to borrow it till you get another that can be arranged, don't think I have a "spare" to sell though. Part number is 50375-323-020 if you can find one

Can you put some pics up of it? I should be able to repair the one that's been cut up if I have something to work to.

Bit on the expensive side once you add postage and import duty.
