Title: Fork seals orientation
Post by: SeanFD on September 22, 2020, 05:05:07 PM
I am about to replace the seals on my 750K2.

I always believed that a seal was inserted so that the size could be read from the outside - which seems not unreasonable.

However a while back, I was watching a Hackaweek video on this and he said the fork seal should be inserted with the ridge (see pic) facing up, which, on my seals (from DSS), would mean the size etc would be on the inside, ie invisible.

Now maybe he has different seals, but the ridge looks the same; can anyone clarify this for me?

That's probably because Hacker week is on about the aftermarket seals that one have a spring only on one side and not the double springed OEM type with a spring on top and one on the underside. But regardless, the writing always faces you when they are inserted, so writing uppermost.

For me, the most common cause of oil leaks is...er...forgetting to put the drain screw back in.

Still...it didn;t take me long to identify the cause of the oil puddle on the floor...  :-[

Thanks Julie.

Interestingly, the ones I took out had only one spring, but no ridge.

Oh twaddle, did my first ever fork seals 3 weeks ago. Spring on both sides so thought it didn't matter. Looks like I will get to do second ever set.  :-\

Oops.

You might be lucky; 50% chance you got at least one right.  ;)
