Title: Side panel grommets
Post by: Sesman on October 05, 2021, 10:06:59 PM
Does anybody know a source for side panel grommets at a reasonable cost. DSS
wants £5 a pop for them!

I bought some cheap items of the net, but they are as hard as iron and I’m reluctant to push the panels in however we’ll they are greased up.

Put the hard grommets in a cup of boiling water for a couple of minutes, it softens them up quite well. Smear with red rubber grease and then fit them in the locating holes and push the panels on. I agree, anyone that pays £5 for 1 grommet needs shooting, it's a rediculous price.

Has anybody tried that wintergreen oil soak method yet, or whatever its called? I've not had a chance yet but it also sounds a bit too easy. anyone had a go?............Just as an alternative maybe?

I’m about to try. Wintergreen and cleaning alcohol. I’m was hoping to permanently change these grommets characteristics to that approaching the OE standard rather than a temporary measure. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I bought a set for the 550 when I restored it, I ended up fitting the old ones couldn’t get the panel located in the new rubbers. Just absolute crap!

That’s certainly how I would describe the ones I bought.  :D

I was  in a hurry rebuilding my cb500/4 when it came to this part of the job, so I just grabbed a trade box of wiring grommets and some vaseline and used the closest generic size, first few time fitting the sidepannels and removing them they were tight and easily pushed right through the frame when fitting, but after a few long rideouts they have bedded in and seem to fit ok now. Enough so as I'm not in a hurry to go searching for the originals that are doubtless age  hardened- in fact I remember they were a right pain to live with back in the past because of that.

When I swaped them for pattern ones on the 750 I had to lube them to get the panal on and then catch the left hand panal in mid flight on the A14

All I can say is well caught!

When you add up the price on a new panal, paint and badges I would consider jumping off the bike to catch it.

I had pannier bags on the bike so thay stopped it from just vanishing.

Depends what you mean by good. Those are the ones I’m about to do chemistry on. When warm they are as compliant as a 6 penny whore (can I say that on here?). When cold penetration is an issue and lubing doesn’t help.

Anyway, experiment commences following delivery of wintergreen and alcohol.

Apologies if my base humour has offended anybody.

Your base humour made me laugh out loud, that, I felt, was a very good way of describing the issue in hand 🤣🤣🤣

 ;D Quite possibly.

I claim no originality. It’s a quote from “Mayhem in Mayfair quartet” by Grace Callaway.

Quite a steamy tome y all accounts. ;)

Okay I'll have to ask what is wintergreen when you get it & what does it do with the alcohol are you making some sort of Poteen without a 'still for cold winter nights?
Title: Re: Side panel grommets
Post by: Sesman on October 09, 2021, 04:31:28 PM
Yes, that’s it Ted. It’s a potent drink, massage oil or you can treat wood with it (wood….snigger).

Apprantly it’s also a persuasive way of refurbishing your hard rubbers…not yours personally of course.

The double entendres are getting out of hand here :D

By Jove, it’s actually working. I’d say a 20% improvement in pliability.

Still needs more time, so will check in tomorrow.

Ok, runners and riders are in. A complete success. Cheap grommets now pliable like OEM. Will now leave a week to see if pliability changes. Next trick, fit panels and test for security.
Title: Re: Side panel grommets

Panels fit fine and pop on off with medium effort. Can wholly recommend buying cheap grommets and treating them as described. Also treated head lamp reflector cones and head light ear mounting rubbers with same success.

Yes, hence the weeks wait. Let’s see…..still no substitute for OEM.
