Post by: Davelu88 on July 18, 2023, 12:07:19 PM
Hi Selling my 75 plate 550F was an import but UK reg now , loads done last year frame & swingarm powder coated , new bronze bushes , new headstock bearings & races , seat , indicators , handle bars , ignition , paint , left side switch gear , plus lots more i have forgot . Has a normal wheel on the rear now and not the wide rim as in the pics i do have some of the other bits that came off it , grab rail fender stays , rear light , it does have a Kerker exhaust which is great & i believe quite expensive . had some new seals in carbs and i put them through the ultrasonic cleaner , tank is mint inside. message if anyone got any questions. £2750

I have a question Dave : Is the silencer bolted to the swinging arm ?

Hi , no it is a bracket to bottom of suspension.  :)

So your exhaust moves up & down with the swing arm ?

Must be a very flexible exhaust coupling.

To be honest I have never seen it move as I think the movement is minimal,  it has never leaked or  moved at all since I have been riding it  :)

I suspect you have accidentally turned it into a Bobber then!

If everything is tight and there is no flex joint in the exhaust and nothing has fractured yet, then you have been very lucky or used it very little. Re
   think the silencer mounting.

It’s bent the bracket quite nicely. A good firm ride….

Never been a problem and do not forsee one either , everything moves in unison.

I think you are failing to see what the problem is Dave. The swinging arm moves up and down, anything attached to the swinging arm also moves up and down, so as the suspension compresses going over a bump the swinging arm moves up, this means so would the exhaust, it has to. This would then flex the entire exhaust system, causing it to break, mostly likely in the middle where it joins the collector box. If you don't remove that bracket the exhaust will break into 2 parts, there is absolutely no doubt about that. The exhaust should hang from the pillion footrest bracket as that is static. I'd suggest you fix the problem before the exhaust breaks (which you are very lucky if it hasn't already), run a long bracket to the pillion footrest hole instead.

Not trying to be negative about your silencer fitting - frankly I'm amazed that  it has not snapped somewhere between the mounting point and the cylinder head without some sort of sprung ball socket joint.

As your rear suspension moves up and down the rear of the silencer has to move up and down - at the cylinder head it is fixed so something has to flex between those two points.

Point taken , I will make a new bracket to the footrest  ;)

Good plan! Is the bike you are selling the Orange bike in your older posts? Looking back at that one it seems to have had a bracket to the top of the suspension unit which would do the trick (if you still have it?).

My thoughts on the bracket to the footrest are that it might not support the silencer too well as it would be at quite a shallow angle to reach the existing silencer mounting (but happy to hear other thoughts)!

...but then, looking again it's not too far so maybe a stiff bar would be fine.!

Makes you wonder why Kerker thought it was a good idea to mount the exhaust bracket there, a few inches forward and it would have not been a problem, the location virtually shouts where to hang it from then.

Sorry to belabour the point Dave, I think we all wanted to make sure the exhaust stayed in one piece and the new owner didn't come back complaining about it breaking in a few months.

The new bracket will remove that possibility, might be an idea though to see if the exhaust is damaged where it meets the collector box, it may have splayed the tabs on the end pipe outwards or even have started to crack.

No worries Ken I'm very grumpy at the mo , I did see everyone's point tho so I am putting it right , exhaust looks fine in fact  it is quite solid with no bracket !!!!. Now what does anyone think of my single speedo setup on another bike I done a few months back 🤔

It is a really good bike and if someone wanted to put it back to original it would not take much , this is the 3rd time I have tried to sell it and no takers ?

If you make the bracket into an elongated angled L shape you could drill an extra small hole or two in the existing  silencer bracket to make it nice and rigid - might be better than just a straight piece.

I've no experience in selling an old Honda as up to now I have only been at the buying end twice.

I get the impression that the good prices that some of these old Hondas fetch are very much linked to it looking completely original.

Once you deviate from that all original appearance then I suspect it's a different sort of buyer one who wants a bargain price project bike.

Buyers for bikes like yours probably fit in between the two extremes so are harder to find - you just need a bit of luck in finding a serious buyer rather than a tyre kicker.

That bracket looks the part - it probably rides better as well without the third unintended damper. 8) 8) 8)
