CB500/550 / Alternative to the chrome points cover
« on: March 18, 2024, 08:56:57 PM »
My chrome points cover on my 550 is a bit rusty and new ones seem to have increased in price a fair bit.

Thought I’d see if my CB650 one fits which is cast aluminium and it fits perfectly.

Not for the purists but looks pretty good.

3 of the rubbers holding my battery box on my 550 are shot.
They are not available so I thought I’d make some.

Made a 2 part mould in the lathe and got some polyurethane liquid rubber stuff.
For a first attempt it came out a treat and there was no shrinkage.

The new one is a slightly different shape because it was done on the lathe. May get a new mould 3D printed so it will be the correct shape.

Top pic is the old one.

CB500/550 / What would cause this camshaft damage?
« on: October 22, 2023, 05:46:32 PM »
Engine was running perfectly, I’ve only stripped the top end due to oil leaks.

Found damage to most of the lobes on the cam. There is no damage to the rest of the cam where it sits in the head and no damage to the rockers.
Also found this tiny disk of metal, about 2mm thick by 5mm diameter. Don’t think it’s part of the engine.

Misc / Open / Painting my engine a few questions
« on: October 17, 2023, 03:30:38 PM »
Before I paint my engine with the Simoniz VHT stuff I was just wondering a few things.

Do I need any kind of etch primer first?

Is the Simoniz paint resistant to petrol, if not  can you lacquer over it?

Thanks.

Anyone got one, need more bike storage.
Just wondered if you get condensation on the inside because the walls are so thin.

Got to do my swingarm bearings on the 650 soon so want to spruce up the look of the swingarm.

Anyone got any recommendations for a rattle can that’s pretty close to the original black?

Misc / Open / Anyone had any luck lining a fuel tank?
« on: March 28, 2023, 06:58:44 PM »
I’ve only ever heard bad things about lining a rusty tank but I have one that is pretty bad inside.

Someone has already had a go at my tank, it’s gone like crisps inside. I’ve got every last bit of it out but it needs something to protect it.

Misc / Open / Re-torquing cylinder head bolts
« on: March 16, 2023, 11:12:42 AM »
Rebuild the top end on my 1980 650 just before Christmas and it’s running perfectly with no leaks.

Should I re-torque the cylinder head bolts after a few miles or is there no need?

Anyone know if there are any performance differences on the Honda Police bikes?

Reason I ask is I’ve just picked up a spare engine for my 650, the engine number starts RG01 instead of the usual RC03. A bit of searching on the internet shows it’s a Police engine.

Wondering why Honda would use a different engine code if the Police engines were the same as the standard ones. The engine looks identical to my standard one.

Misc / Open / Removing dents with a steel ball and a magnet
« on: January 10, 2023, 04:08:09 PM »
Was flicking tv channels yesterday and caught an old episode of The Repair Shop.
Guy was fixing dents in the tube of a vintage telescope with a ball bearing probably in excess of an inch diameter on the inside and a large magnet on the outside.
He said the magnet had a pull of 26kg and he slowly massaged the dents out by working the ball over the dent with the magnet.

Wonder if this would work on fuel tanks, exhausts etc. I appreciate the metal is probably thicker but might be worth a go.
