That Engine looks beautiful, i hope mine looks as good when finished, bad news about your frame, you may be luck and the rot is just in the one place, if so it would be worth repairing with a new peice of tube, Pete

The guy i got the engine off said it was 76/77 and was bought as a spare for his F1, the reason i bought it was because as i am restoring my F2 i am always looking for parts, then all of a sudden a real cheap F1 engine comes up for sale, i have in the back of my mind keeping it for a spare if the F2 engine is as bad as a few people say (although i know they are not) i also have a K8 bottom end , i am told this is the same as an F2 so there is another question. As i have aquired so many parts lately i have decided on a cafe racer as a second project, so as i am building my first project i am already obssesing about my next one , SHIT!!! i have got it real bad for the love of god some one please stop me before i have a f---ing garage full of them. The silly thing is i have never ridden one of these 750 Hondas, there is every chance i wont even like them. Pete

Can anyone tell me if the F1 engine is the same as the k6, the reason i ask is i have just scored myself a cheap complete engine, The number is cb750E 2546??? i forgot the last few numbers and cant be bothered to go to the shed, the honda chopper site has the same numbers for k6 and F1 engines, Pete

If you do start taking it apart get as many photos as you can. they always come in usefull plus every one loves to see progress in pictures on the forums, i would suggest before you go too far cost up the bits you think you are going to need, i recently started a rebuild/ restoration of a 750, and it stands me in at least 3 times what i wanted to spend already. Hi all, when i got my bike it had no engine, it still had the ignition module attached to the frame, my question to you guys is can i still use this for anything i know there must be some bits missing, if any one recognises it do they have the missing bits or know where i can get them, or is this part only good for the bin ? Thanks pete

Nice project Andy, cleaning the cylinders up is a real pain, i blasted mine but a friend of mine done his by submerging in a tank of thinners and leaving for a few days. Pete

I managed to get some more parts blasted clean today, it is so satisfying when you have a whole load of clean parts sitting on the bench, when the temperature rises i will have a go at painting them, Also today my new wheel bearings and bearing seals arrived so i can install these and be a step nearer to having a rolling chassis Pete

I just picked up my new rubber, a really nice looking pair of tyres, they cost alot more as they had to fit 2 new tubes, what tyres do you guys use? I am finding it hard to keep motivated with the resoration , the thought of going outside at the moment puts me off I hope the -5 temperatures and snow go away soon. Pete

Today i decided to have a go at removing the broken tap out my engine casing, anyone who has ever broken one off and tried removing it will know it is a really awkward job , drilling is not really an option as they are so hard . I started off MIG welding a blob on to the cleaned end of broken tap, i then placed a nut over the blob and welded the nut to the tap, once done i tried undoing it, but it sheared off a bit further down the tap, so i tried the same again and on the 5th attempt i managed to free up the tap and unscrew it , it made a bit off a mess to the case but nothing real serious, i am just pleased i got it put, i was not so lucky with the two snapped off bolts that i found that were already broken when i dismantled the engine, these two just would not move with the nut welding trick, so i filed one flat, center punched it and hand drilled with a drill bit half the diameter, i made a right F--k up of this the drill seemed to move off center a bit so when i drilled the next hole of the exact size it chewed off some of the casing on one side i must have drilled in at a bad angle. I will attempt to redrill and Helicoil the one i messed up, the other one i am going to leave as it is right next to the big 8mm through bolts that hold the crank cases together, my thoughts are that the engine showed no sign of leaking with both these bolts missing before, so it should be OK especially as i will have repaired one of them, below is a picture of the removal of broken tap Pete

Hi i made a bit more progress today on the restoration, i fitted the swingarm bearings, then fitted swingarm, centerstand and side stand, battery box with some of the electrics, inner guard, oil tank, and top and bottom yolks, also i have received my new SS valves and guides from USA, the head is blasted and old guides removed so i am ready to press in the new ones and grind the valves in, the top crank case is blasted, just need to find the time to blast bottom case, cylinders, and any other bits so i can spray them black, i have opted fro POR 15 engine enamel for the engine, as this seems to be the toughest finish, and totally petrol and solvent proof. I am a bit pissed off as i managed to snap off a tap in the crank case half when cleaning out the threads, so i am going to have to do the old MIG weld a nut on trick and hope that this works, there is also two broken off engine case bolts that were already broken off , i will either drill them or try the same nut welding trick.
Happy new year to all
Pete

I just put all mine together and i think it would of worked better with the old thin washer and rubber, it seems like the top bearing is too thick and does not sit far enough down in the head, so when assembled there is only four or five threads of the top stem poking through. if i had used the old thin washer i would have had 3 of more threads , i dont think this head bearing kit is worked out very well for the F2 Pete

The parts for the F2 are getting harder to find, for example pistons ,rings and valves, i would say the fact that there are plenty of them still running and on the road would suggest they can last, apparently the valve guides are the first thing to wear out, but are easy to replace and still available, also the valve tips can take quite a beating the fix for this is to instal lash caps, nearly all engine parts for these black engined F2's are available, dynoman & cycle x in the USA make piston kits, ss valves, springs , cams ect, if you look around and have a large wallet anything is possible, i am rebuilding one at the moment , i dont expect to do more than 1000 miles a year on it so once rebuilt it should be good for a long time, you have to remember that k models also have there problems its not as if they go on for ever with out anything wearing out, but the production run was long so parts are a bit cheaper, and easier to get in some cases. I have 14 bikes and if i go on to any forum there always seems to be negative coments about any one of them, i think there is nothing better than to make up your own mind , my opinion of the F2 is it is the last and the best of the sohc Hondas and a fast appreciating classic, i may change my veiws when i have finished it , if a k model came up for the right price i would also like to own one of them one day. oh yes the f2 have points, but aftermarket electronic igniton is available still Pete
