Title: Getting cb750k on centre stand
Post by: Simon46 on August 09, 2018, 12:10:22 PM
Really struggling to get my USA import on centre stand. Is it cause my rear wheel is smaller? Maybe I'm a weakling  ;D

Hmmm, Mine goes on ok although definitely not the easiest I have ever known, you do have to press quite hard on the lever with your foot while lifting the seat grab rail.

If it makes you feel better Simon I have never, ever been able to get a CB750 on the center stand, I struggle with a CB 500/4 and CB550/4 but I can do the CB400/4 on a good day but it has to be a very good day !!!

I attended gatley motorcycle owners group before my local pub got demolished to make way for new houses. . I asked a guy how do you get your massive gold wing on its ctre stand. He goes try it. I declined. He insisted.
I did it. Maybe I used the force luke.  :D

if you have a smaller wheel,it means you have more to lift,

when I had a rear puncture ,and the rear was flat,I found it impossible to lift my 500 onto the stand ,

No it's definatly a struggle. Almost pulls my arm out of the socket. It certainly won't get any lighter or easier as time marches on and when it's sat on the side stand it's bordering vertical which never looks safe !. A slight rock and huge effort to lift gets it there eventually - in 10 years time it will be a different story.

When I got my US ko obviously a large previous owner had been sitting/kick starting on the main stand
this had bent the stop bar meaning the  stand went way too far over vertical, I had a 16 " wheel on the back and both wheels were touching the ground.
When on the stand the rear wheel should be clear of the ground .
I did a total rebuild on mine so had stop plates welded on the stand stop bar .
Can you do a side on photo of the stand  ,that should be able to give a clue.

It's harder in flip-flops

Real men don't wear flip flops  :P

I don't know what my dads been doing to my bikes but he's managed to brake the glue bond on the left hand grips on two of them. He didn't tell me with the 550 and when I put it away it made me sweat somewhat as it slid off in my hand with the bike in limbo not on the stand and not off it.

I think I'm trying to lift it too much. Practice required with a chaperone

Simon, i'm really pleased you are having difficulty in getting your cb750 on the centre stand, because it means that i am not the only wimp on this forum.

I too am having great difficulty in getting my newly acquired American import K1 on the centre stand. Back in 1973 i had a new K2 and had no problem in getting that on the stand, ok, i was 25 back then, now i'm 70 but i don't think i've lost that much muscle and having owned over 100 bikes since i was 16 i don't think it's a technique issue.

Well not you by your own admission!
And anyway, I don’t wear the flip-flops on the Harley, might get caught in the foot clutch.

The method is to turn the handlebars all the way the the left and then press down on the centre stand lever with all your weight whilst gently  pulling the left hand grip towards the rear of the bike, the most important element is the downward force on the centre stand lever, now stop being such a bunch of bloody wimps!
(Except Nurse Julie who by reason of being a lady is simply not heavy enough to generate enough downwards force on the centre stand lever of course 🙂, NJ your only option is to employ the help of an overweight gentleman, do you know of one in your house?, sorry area not house!)

I'm with Mark on this - no more problems at 63 than when I was 25 - maybe things will change over the coming years. Maybe bent stand if a problem?

Hello all,
I’ve been away for over 12 months with medical issues (now sorted) and a full time job (need to sort) but have been avidly reading all your posts.
All this time the K2 has been sitting in the garage and have done nothing to it. The last time I pulled it on the centre stand, it was a real struggle as I’d just had a heart op (rib cage open job) and that hurt.
Now when I bought the K2 from DK it didn’t have a centre stand so I procured one from ebay. Came from Holland and was I think from an F1.
On fitting the stand I thought it was a bit on the long side as the rear wheel sits about 2 ½ inches clear of the ground; other 750s I have seen seem to be less. As its longer, I have to pull back and lift more: hence the struggle. Can someone have a quick measure of theirs (bike) and if its less then I’ve got the wrong stand.
Additionally, I was less than happy about the new fork gaiters I fitted. These were from Dave Silver and must be too short as they have ripped themselves to bits over the year sitting there with the forks on full extension. Good way to blow £18.
That’s it for now, I intend to get the bike MoT’d by the end of the summer (looks to be about now) and will report back.
Ride safe!
Phil

Another K2

Profile of tyre and wheel size would also be factors of course.

Haha, yes, I have the certificate somewhere....it does the job, just. I suppose I could have used a Vernier really 😁😁😁 It proves the point that Phil's centre stand is too long though.

Very true, also depends how knackered the rear shocks are as well.

Not so sure, look at the angle from which his image shows and from which ours show. I noticed whilst I was diligently  ::) trying to get an accurate measurement that the reading varied greatly depending on my eye level in relation to the tape.

I notice one earlier post mentions the technique of turning the bars to the left and pulling on the bars while standing on the lever, no mention of lifting the rear end with the grab rail? I have always used the grabrail to lift on any bike with a centrestand, it seems such a natural way of doing it...

UK CB 750 K2's don't have rear grab rails only the side rail.

Did you know you can measure to a 10 thou accuracy with a steel rule!

They have marks every 1/2mm and you can judge the centre of two marks easily and 1/4mm is 10 thou

Surely the LHS rail is primarily there for lifing the rear end. Turn the handlebars left if required, hold with the left hand, stand on the lever on the stand and pull up and back on the side rail with your right hand. Did a Gold Wing recently, but years since I tried 750. The 550F is a synch. It seems bikes with the 4/4 pipe designs make the angle on the centre stand foot less than ideal. I'm barely 9st.

I manage to put mine on the centre stand on the work bench and you cant pull the bars full left lock on there, whilst wearing slippers.  ;) ;)

Try a Triumph Trophy 1200 there a big top heavy bastard there's no way I can lift that in a dress and heals.

I concur it's all about geometry and mechanical advantage etc.  I had a 1200 Trophy and fitted Lust lowering links as it was too tall for me.

Just that small change in height meant there was no way I could heave it on to the centre stand.

Solution I had the stand shortened by around 15mm and hey presto it was, I wont say easy but easier !! The Trophy is a 350Kg massive lump but I Still think the Triumph designers should have spent more time engineering better leverage geometry.

What I am saying in short is that small changes in ride height due to different shocks, tyres etc can have a really big impact on effort
