After restoring the 650 Katana it let me down a few times. It's probably an easy fix for an experienced motorbike mechanic with adequate workshop facilities but by then I was swearing at the bike as it had pissed me off too often and I had fallen out of love with it. I sold it on eBay last week and with the proceeds bought something else.
A K75. Just picked it up from Burnham on Sea, a lovely smooth comfortable 65 mile ride home on a bike I've always wanted.

The K75 is a flat 3 cyl, the K1000 is the flat four.

It's a flat three, so there.
When I was dispatching, two other riders had K100s for long distance deliveries, Scotland etc. One of the guys had an electrical problem on his, which I sorted for him so I took it for a test ride. Since that day, I always wanted one - or a K75. I don't give a toss if you don't like it so keep your childish comments to yourself.

The fairing needs repairing, the screen is cracked and needs replacing but it's ok for now. The seat needs recovering and the tank is the wrong colour
Apart from those minor issues, it starts, stops and gets down the road quick.

No ABS. It does come with some large touring panniers with removable inners.

I bought it for long distance travel as I don't really want to take the 400 abroad. The 400 will always be my favourite and I'll never sell it.

Don't get me started on superdreams. I used a 400N when i despatched in London in 1983 until the engine blew up.

I think Mick was referring to the CX500 which was a favourite of despatch riders for many years due to it's reliability and relative simplicity, bmw's would no doubt have been their dream bike bar the price at the time!

400nN, the only bike i had to replace a complete alternator on because it holed a piston

How did that happen? Was it something to do with the CDI pre igniting?
+1 on the CXs, also a lot of Kawasaki GT550s

Honda reckoned the alternator coils partially shorted and altered the timing enough. At first you had to order both stator and rotor as an assembly at megabucks then they changed so you could order just the stator plate cheaper (but still expensive), strangely when you opened the parts box you got both parts!!!

I've just sold my K100RS 16V which is the flat four version, a great bike, bullet proof engine, well built and will go forever with good maintenance.
The only downside for me was that the ABS is temperamental and its very heavy but once on the move its solid as a rock. I still have some spares if anyone is interested. They have a loyal following too, especially abroad.

I saw one on ebay which had the ABS warning light on but the dealer claimed was only a warning light issue. From talking to a K100 owner, the ABS pump is certainly knackered and they cost £1700 to replace. I think I'm better off without ABS.
Just out of interest, what spares have you got?

The pump is not usually the problem, the ABS unit (brain) is unreliable and only a handful of people have the equipment to test/repair the unit, obviously new ones are unavailable so there's a limited supply of good used units. The brakes are fine without the ABS so generally when the unit goes, owners just ignore the ABS warnings and ride without ABS.
The bike went last week and I've bought a BMW F800ST as a replacement so I'm clearing out everything, they're on fleabay at the moment. If they don't sell together I'll probably ditch some parts and keep the rest

That's why I asked about ABS.
I had a K100 in my barn (it was Eamon's) and that had the ABS light on continuously. The general consensus amongst K100 owners was that replacement cost more than the bike was worth so most seemed to just ignore it...
