Project Board / Re: CB350F Restoration by royhall
« on: July 02, 2015, 08:06:08 AM »
Your well on your way with it Tim, were just approaching the jobs in different directions. You'll be there soon (I know what you mean about time, I'm getting some flack for always being in the garage. Apparently I'm obsessed) ;D Gardening this weekend. :(

The re-bore was done by a small machine shop near where I live. The guys called David Burton, he's a real eccentric character but a superb engineer.
I get a fair few bits done by him. He re-ground the back disc on the 750 as it was a bit tram-lined, came back literally better than new for £40.
Cant just remember what he charged me for the re-bore (possibly £80 getting old ya know), but I know it was much less than another quote I had and the job he did was fantastic.

If you want to when your ready, you can post your bits to me and I can drop them in to him, its no problem as its only about 1/4 mile away.

Cheers Roy.

Looking good Roy..

You have just answered mine and JamesH's question. How much is it to re-surface  a CB 750 brake disc? The 750K0 disc  is  different than the later bikes. My bike had the later wheel hub/disc (K1-K6) so I bought a K0 front  wheel complete with correct hub & 'rotor' (disc) from the States but it's surface is slightly scored. I also have the original K1-K6 disk (not badly scored) and a K7 one, (not badly scored) . What do you reckon I should eBay them for BIN ?

Can you also find out the re-bore costs, as I may have some barrels to do off a twin.

Cheers ... Ash

Agree on Clutch plates stuck after period of standing .Welcome from me too. I have an 8/75 CB400F myself. Lovely little bikes and much easier to restore now repro parts available.

You can download a Genuine Honda Service (Shop) manual off my Dropbox here for free: Plus parts list.

What I find as a non-pro is that if the cross head screws are chewed up a bit, reform the cross as best as you can with hammer and flat head punch. Then whack the punch against the head with a hammer to jar the threads and then use a decent fitting crossherad driver to remove. If you hit the head of the driver with a hammer it will reform the crosshead in the screw. If totally knadgered , either use a cold chisel on the side of the screw head to try to tap round or drill out. ALL with great care and attention of course. Impact driver useful of course if you have one but take care not to hit it too hard and not much use if the screw head is f'ed.

CB750 / Re: UK K0 on Ebay
« on: June 30, 2015, 02:43:59 PM »
So Ash, when you complete your UK CB750 K0, so it's as good as the day it came off the production line, will you take £10k off me for it?. Shall I send you a deposit now and when can I take delivery?  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hope your well Ash
x

Probably never sell it in my lifetime Julie but If it was finished now and I had to sell it and only got 10k for it, I wouldn't be disappointed. Probably 'cos the parts were much cheaper 6 years ago, like the pipes were 500 quid etc.etc.then instead of the 2.5k GBP someone is asking on eBay for a new Honda set.

For some reason people squirreled away 400/4's almost new in the 70's and there are some almost brand spanking new looking  ones around, with next to no miles. Not surprised that they command getting on for 10k if anyone is daft enough to pay that. Bob Heath of visor fame owns an Ex-Honda UK CB750K0 with about 500 miles on the clock.. that bike would be worth a lot more than 10k as it's exceptionally original, as is the 1st UK one and the press one YLY70H or Dick Emery's if its still around. Suppose mine is the 14th UK one so people may pay silly money but it had had a hard life before I got hold of  it, so to me its a sub-10k worth bike.

IMHO it would need a bomb spending on it to get correct. Superficially looks nice but a few nasties lurking there, that I won't go into to avoid sounding even more anoraky than I am. I am told I am out of touch with pricing but I still maintain that all of the ones on eBay recently are totally overpriced. I still think totally restored K0 = no more than 10K GBP tops and a genuine  UK supplied model  will sell easier. I have yet to talk/contact anybody who has actually paid even that kind of money for one. There are also tons of decent 400/4 cropping up for low money recently around the 3k mark. I reckon my 250/350K twins will be worth more than my own  400/4  , which has all the nice bits new on it like NOS exhaust, NOS mudgards etc. We probably have DS to partly thank for that.

Transition model  :-\ with linked carbs.  :-\ Funny looking airbox with no ribs. Correct recessed ignition ( key wrong .. no plastic plug)  and black kill switch though. Rear lamp not oval as on true UK models though. Tank has K1 style trim with black stripe

Don't remember Takasago rims being standard on a CB750 , always DID. HM341's too.

Steff is bound to have an input on this one !

Brymor, near Masham. I highly recommend the Rhubarb Crumble ice cream, but keep an eye out for the strange flavours like Brown Bread.

Cream o' Galloway. Whisky Honey and Oats ice cream was my preference here.

For a massive breakfast try Border House Teas in Masham.

Is that near where the Theaksons Old Peculiar Brewery is ? ... lovely beer that ... used to drink it at The Hayburn Wyke Inn. Once gave my son, then 10,  half a pint of it when a swarm of wasps got him, to null the pain. Seemed to work too.

Ash, I think you are overstressing mate. Consider the facts

(1) its an old motorcycle no matter how many new bits

(2) You are unlikely to rag the arse off it in any way that comes close to its original owner(s)

(3) Being honest its probably going to be a sunny high day and holiday bike

(4) No matter what you build it with, run it in nicely(but not too carefully) with lots of oil changes and it will outlast either of us!!

Point taken  :-[

Going through my new parts I bought about 6 years ago for my 750 and 250 and breathing a sigh of relief that I bought them then and not now (like HM 300's for £500, front mudguard for £75, 750K1 seat £140, etc from DSS). However some parts are cheap still in comparison e.g. Wonder if they have just escaped the net.

https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/by-part-number/hpart_9501451100/ Throttle grip 83 pence + VAT

https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/by-part-number/partnumber_17620402010/   Chromed fuel cap inc. seal for CB250 £8.50 +VAT

These are new part prices not NOS.

So do I Plastigage or not given that I am pretty sure my measurements were spot on as the guy that measured them is an old engineering 'sage'  from the NEL ?

Must admit that the old SOHC four crank (a 400/4) I ever fitted new shells to, I didn't Plastigage and it was fine (the 400/4 crank and shells on my current 400/4 looked so nice I just left well alone and refitted).

Having said this the Honda shop manual specifically tells you to Plastigage and not to rely on measurements.
