CB350/400 / Re: Parakeet Yellow Paint Code

I'm not 100% certain being a USA colour but Freedom Green was used on 750's and not 500's, maybe the 550's though🤔🤔🤔🤔.

Well I meant 500/550 but the 550 like the 500 not the 'F' series or 'K3' Julie. Wasn't the USA  early 550 just a bored out version of the 500?

I think this is a '74 550 with that colour scheme. I just need to confirm it's the corrert for Johnny's bike before shelling out on some paint for him. The panel I have is NOS and never painted (bought it off Bryan when I got my 500K0 so he will know).

Dave ... it's gonna look stunning whatever shade you finally decide. Sadly never photo'd my lovely Parakeet Yellow F2 ... it got nicked from work ..never to be seen again. Some b*stard on FaceBook about 2 yrs ago posted a comment on a Hull memories site when there was a  feature on the place I worked saying ' Yea nicked loads of motorbikes from there' . I always looked around for a 400 with front engine triangular plates made of some sort of brass alloy??? as the PO had laser cut some for it where he worked. ... so a magnet would have been a good detective tool.

My mate Graham Curtis has restored about 3 Parakeet Yellow 400/4s . One was a magazine resto project for Classic Motorcycle Mechanics in 1994 . So I asked him about paint and he said he had it mixed a shade  brighter yellow  than the original as he preferred it . I did the same with 'Honda Scarlet' for my 1960s bikes as the original looked slightly too orangey to me. Attached is the magazine cover and a shot  with Dinah May sitting on it as she was a model employed by Honda in the late 1970's to promote the new bikes including the 400F2.

Below for Johnny

Johnny ... is this the green you are looking for on this original 500 panel? I think it is 'Freedom Green Metallic' ref.  'TE' but someone like Trigger/Julie/Bryan with probably be able to confirm.

Your not going to be heading there soon by any chance Ash?
I can go there any time you like as it's about 2 miles from where I do my painting.

Y31 is just a Honda reference code not a paint code as such.

Isn't there a paint supplier (not painter) near you Dave that does have a spectrophotometer?

The place I go to in Hull will supply paint he has formulated from spectrophotometer readings for no extra cost.
He did that for me on some paint I got to match 'Honda Gentle Maroon Metallic' for my mate Jim using a NOS side-panel.

Someone told me Chevrolet WA9414 Yellow is a very close match. Never checked it out though. Can't the paint shop scan your NOS tank or panel Dave?

Peter Horton is your man. Kent400 on here.
Wondering too if it's the correct speedo for the bike though.
I think there is slight adjustment on the hairspring but a delicate job.

Are thanks Ash

I will give that a try over the next day or so and see..... I have two meters one a fluke and the one you see which is a new one all bells and you Know what ..... which is all automatic so will try both.....it was meant to be a new battery what came with the bike.......... but if it is that at Fault I will get a Motobatt one if it is..as I got them on all my bikes.... My Kh400 had one on that 13 years before I changed it last year, I built that 17 years ago this year .... had to rebuild it two years ago after a silly "woman" ( Girl ) done a U turn in font of me coming back from the Copdock bike show after a good day as my BSA won but coming back home on the KH400 she did that......... But ha ho after a broken Shoulder and 8 broken ribs later I am here to tell the story as they say.

Cheers
Mo

Oh dear glad you recovered OK Mo.

Not saying the battery is at fault just another thing to try as I read on another forum that a guys charging issues were down to the battery in the end .....  after a lot of head scratching.

If you then still suspect the stator then send it to me and I will check it out for you electrically.

Mo ... I wonder if it's anything to do with the battery. Those later 5-speed epoxy coated stators are pretty reliable and you said you thought that the stator magnets still have a lot of magnetic strength, so I would imagine you should be generating a decent amount of power/

If your meter has a 10 Amp DC range it may be worth connecting it in series between the battery positive terminal and the wires that connect to the battery as in this Honda diagram attached. IMPORTANT THOUGH !!! Don't use the electric starter ... only use kick-start. Measure the current with just the yellow wire connected from the alternator and then with both yellow and white connected. Report back with your findings at tickover and 3k RPM.

If your meter does have the 10A DC range you need to connect the red probe to the high current socket on the meter. Send me details of your meter and I can suss it out if you are uncertain.
UPDATE ! You meter does indeed have a 10A DC range as I just checked it out in one of the pictures in an earlier posts and there is a 10A red socket to be used in conjunction with the normal black negative socket.

The clip I found isn't correct ... must be off one of  my other Hondas.

Can anyone take some measurements please so I can make one myself.

Looks like this:-

Quote from: McCabe-Thiele (Ted) link=topicentr stand tube c=29828.msg296716#msg296716 date=1710284798
I never thought of it at the time - afterwards I did wonder if a couple of really close fitting bolts with a thick washers  could be inserted on each side then give them a good thump with a lump hammer. The bolt might stop the tube from distorting alternate on each side in the hope of breaking the rust layer after thorough soaking in penetrating oil. Even better if the tube was threaded to take the bolts?

I  tried everything Ted and even hack-sawing like many recommend on here but I found that the pivot tube was severely  corroded to the centre stand  (all UK bikes, so used in all kinds of weather unlike USA bikes). I did about five of my centre stands and also my friends CB250K4 early last year  by drilling out and success on every one. The good thing is that the original pivot tube was hollow so the drill centres pretty good.

I need to check the exact  size of the drill I used though .. from memory it was just slightly smaller than the pivot tube OD.

I always drill 'em out. Never had a lot of success with the hacksaw method. Or on occasion remove the pivot  tube completely and weld in a section of tube from a Vauxhall Corsa wheel nut wrench.

Agree with Bryan .. if original Keihin brass-ware then re-use if possible.
Also check your carb rubber diaphragms for splits.
Also check the little rubber bung that blocks one of the ports ... they sometimes go really hard.
