It appears from the parts book that the 550K1 didn't get the double thickness plate OR the larger tagged friction plate that the later models did.

Nothing wrong with standard OE plates IMO.

What's wrong with the plates you have now?

Mine's dirt cheap, free to a good home. Just pay the P&P. Needs a rubber though, I nicked the one that came with it. Oh and a pinch bolt but you'll have one of those.

You however must promise to feed it, stroke it gently on occasion and be nice to it. Oh and make it feel loved.

The change in number doesn't mean much in that case, it can mean a change in manufacturer, a change in composition, maybe a harder rubber etc. If it was a major change they'd have changed the part number or the middle number and recalled all the F2s so they could change those.

If it's a 500 stay with the 500 book, same as 550, F stay with the F book and K stay with the K book.

Roo there is no spring washer on a flanged bolt so why would you need one on a stainless one. Just put a plain washer under the head, preferably a slightly thicker one than standard then just do them up to standard torque, not that I ever did torque the casing screws up, just used the pressure on my thumb against the head of the ratchet and never had one come loose yet.

I've replaced every engine crankcase bolt on my rebuild with stainless this time, the casings I use the more modern 8mm headed flanged bolts that Honda use today. I'll zinc/nickel plate them all before fitting.

See if you can get some largish shrink tube, put it over the cable clamps and just shrink it into place. Sharp edges like those will wear the covering away. Position looks ok TBH. If you need some I've probably got some lying around.

Not great that is it, I can see the staining and the scratches, which TBH usually look worse in a pic than they do in real life, I can see where they caught the edges on something as well. Got to be honest and say I've seen much worse. I can't say for sure that I'd have done better without doing one myself first, they could be complete bitches to do OR they could be pretty easy, hard to say without doing one. I've got more than a few of them TBH so maybe I'll have a go and see how one comes out.

My lads grab rail is looking to be the best I've ever done I think, if the finish before you start to polish is anything to go by it should be better than you're sliders. They were really really bad to start off with, one of the worse I've ever started with I reckon.

Have you tried another field coil or stator coil? Just to see if the fault goes away, sometimes swapping parts is quicker than fault finding.

I have a brand new gear lever off another Honda, bought it for the gear lever rubber TBH for my CB1300. It's not chrome, it's BZP. It fits the 500, the rubber position is the same as the 500, the length is the same as the 500, it's just shaped slightly differently.

How authentic do you want it to look, TBH unless you knew I doubt you'd spot it, you need to be a SOHC owner or a fanatic on parts to spot it, get it chromed and I doubt they'd tell the difference offhand.

DS should have all those in Gary. Certainly got the drum collar.

What's wrong with the gear lever? looks ok in the pics.

Professionals get dents out by spot welding a small rod onto the dent, then use a slide hammer action on the rod to pull the dent out, the spot weld is then ground off.

Should have put a close up pic of the clutch cover up so we could see how the chromers did with the repolish. Doesn't look to bad from a distance but could be pants close up.

Tricks & Tips / Re: polishing thread?
« on: November 12, 2022, 05:40:21 PM »
I've been doing it all afternoon and TBH I find it easy. You can get things looking so that you wonder if it will ever go flat and then suddenly it just starts too. It's have you got the patience to keep at it so you get to that point. I've just spent 4 hours doing the grab rails off my lads VT1100 and those were in a really bad state, now they are starting to look really nice.

Maybe you should have started with easier pieces, brake plates are hard to do, loads of stone chips etc, sprocket covers are not easy either. Clutch covers are better because they are protected by the engine so get less damage. Try a camshaft end cap and practice on that. Or a dipstick.
