Title: Primary Chain
Post by: oldchuffer on August 17, 2021, 06:08:51 PM
Assembling my CB400F engine, is there a way to tell if the primary chain is worn?  I've no idea of mileage so wondering if i should replace it anyway, but they are a bit expensive. Any advice much appreciated.

Lay it on the bench one flat side to bench, if the inner "teeth" touch its toast.
There is a Kawasaki one exactly the same but cheaper

As has been mentioned the Yamaha Part is cheaper at £58.25 for the primary chain from MSP.
Mine was item number 920571011 Chain,Primary drive ZX550-A1 @ £40.22 plus Vat & £8.32 shipping = £58.25.

I think it's a Kawasaki chain rather than Yamaha

Possibly when I bought mine there was a link on this site & I followed that and bought one.
The details I have posted are from my receipt from MSP no mention of a bike make but on the site it looks like its a Kawasaki part looks like its gone up a fiver in price.

I'm sure others here will confirm the part as the Honda 400/4 is not listed on the MSP menu that only goes back as far as 1985 - they do show a later part number for 23131-323-000 as 23131-323-003 @ £137 genuine Honda if you search the part number option.
