Title: OEM Tank / Sidepanels - how do I verify?
Post by: Lobo on December 04, 2012, 10:47:56 PM
Hi all,

The side panels on my 'new' 400F are obviously repros, but the tank... unsure. Can anyone tell me how to positively confirm these parts as OEM or otherwise?

You've guessed it, new to the CB400F....

Cheers,
Lobo

Don't think there is any definitive way

Don't know but mine is dry and off the bike at the moment. Post pics if you want me to compare (mine's a 78 F2)

Thanks guys. I assume from this no part numbers etc stamped into the underside - my tank is not nearby but I have had a thorough look all about it (inc underside) & nothing at all in respect of markings. Cap / lock all a great fit - have no reason to suspect the tank apart from the matching side panels seem a bit too...er...light.
Tom, out of interest, just forward of the aft-most horizontal 'flange' (that the seat rubber mount captures) my tank has a small downwards vertical flap, pressed out of this whole bracket. Does this tie in with your OEM tank please? (sorry, bike in a lock-up 40 miles away - ie no pics)
Cheers,
Lobo
(On the subject what defines the OEM Sidepanels? I'm guessing mine not OEM, as appear to be light polycarbonate mouldings.) Originals made from....?

Tanks supplied as spares did not always come with the preserve nature sticker and rarely with the cap, never with the tap

Some pictures for you. I think the answer is yes - see what you think. Also one of my side panels. As Oddjob says the side panels are the same colour all the way through. Number on the inside. The flange the rubber fits over on the tank has some digits on it

Cheers Tom, fantastic - thanks for your help. It appears the tank may be original which is great. Just gotta swap it to your Parakeet yellow & perhaps source some OEM side panels as mine really are crappy.
Thanks again,
Lobo

Yup i would say rarely, fitted lots of new tanks to accident bikes in the 70's and always remember having to get new pins for the cap and catch

I have no reason to suspect my tank is not the one that came on the bike. Has no sticker.

the fuel tap on a genuine tank has the filter on it repow looks like a single plastic pipe plus the threads for the taps are diffrent
