I have looked after this engine for the last 8 years. It's lived in the barn with the (now all gone) dozen or so motorcycles and miscellaneous parts that formed "Nirvana Motorcycles". It was built in the early 90s by Dave Jupp (of VJMC fame) from a set of F2 crankcases that had suffered from a chain "blow" and various other scrap pieces that were about. It lived in Tippetts Motors showroom in Surbiton until the inevitable glass/chrome corporate refurb consigned it to the scrapheap. No room for this sort of thing in a modern motorcycle dealer. Dave did a fantastic job. He split the duplex primary chain and half of it descends into the box below where there lives a large electric motor with a small electronic timer. Press the button and the motor ran for about 60 seconds before resetting. A glass mirror case and internal lighting completed the show. I decided that the engine had to find a new home (not least because the owner of the barn was retiring and wanted to sell up and move to the coast), but had to be sure that it went somewhere that would appreciate and look after it. Sammy Miller fitted the bill and after a few calls they admitted that they had just completed a new extension to the museum and that this would make a fitting addition to the new exhibits. Today, Bill (the curator) came down and collected the engine for the beginning of the next stage of its life... More soon.

Hi all. Sorry about the recent error message when trying to upload attachments. The folder on the server was set to 4Gb and we have now exceeded that. When I set that up, storage was quite expensive. It is still expensive but in general you can get 100x what you could for the money. I've reset the allowance to 400Gb; that should keep us going for another few years. (There are 5,600 attachments on the server at present...) I haven't changed the other settings: - Max size for any attachment = 1Mb
- Max attachments per post = 5
- Max total size per post = 4Mb
Please use a picture resizer to get your photos down to <1Mb, or host externally and use the [img] function. That's the one that looks like a tiny Mona Lisa on the toolbar. Steve

I've been working on one of these for a customer so thought I'd have a go at putting one on here.
Unfortunately, forum software doesn't do that sort of thing very well (or at all actually...), so I'm going to link to an external site (my blog) and will host it there.
So the question is "What should be in it?"
I'm not offering to write it but happy to import/edit/format etc.
I'll be using Wiki software so there should be an opportunity for reader edits and comments (if you are good)

As Admin, I can manually adjust the stored post count directly on the database... [ Guests cannot view attachments ] I thought I'd just post this picture though to mark the occasion

Many years ago I started a "Mugshots" thread on .net (actually it was started by Raul in Spain - and it was 2005)
There are now 29 pages of them.
I think its about time we had one on here...

Hi all.
I thought you might be interested to see how the forum stacks up so far this year vs each year since we started:
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
2007 was the year that we switched from the previous bulletin-board system to the SMF forum software.
In comparison, here are the same stats from .net:

Interesting...

Having got "Goldie" back right at the end of probably the warmest and driest September ever and with a dreadful weather forecast, it was with some trepidation that I looked out of the bedroom curtains at a reasonable hour (post Suzuka Grand Prix) to find a glorious sunny (if not warm) morning. Time for a ride...
Nervous. Last time I rode one of these was about 5 years ago and I've ridden a series of modern Triumphs since then. Would it go? Would it stop? Would it piss fuel all over the swingarm and the road?
The answer was "Yes" to all of those...

Fuel on. Choke on. Thumb the starter and she bursts into life.
As I remember, a cacophony of rattles at tickover with that glorious four-pipe Honda soundtrack.
First impressions? The front disc brake is absolutely useless (even on a dry sunny morning) - I'm going to have to take it apart and take a look. The throttle is very heavy and it feels very small.
I guess it is about the same physical size as the Street Triple that I rode the other day, albeit with less than half the power. I am definitely sitting "on" it and not "in" it as I do with the Tiger.
Filled it up with fuel. Yes it leaks out of carb #1 (more fixing to do). The neutral light doesn't work and the indicator switch has no central detente.
I really need to do a few miles and then go home and check that all the nuts & bolts are still there, that the tyres are still inflated and the oil level hasn't dropped. I needn't have worried. It was great.
After 20 miles or so I headed home. Maxed at about 75mph (ish) which was fine. Felt good, handled OK (a bit hard) and sounded great.
All in all, very pleased. It is still filthy after 8 years in a barn and there's definitely a "patina of age" about the bike. Love it!

I've had this bike for 8 years and it hasn't turned a wheel. Now, thanks to Sean Brennan at SB Engineering, I have a re-commissioned bike and a shiny new MOT (if not a shiny new bike) There's still loads wrong with it but I'm going to resist the "K0 Disease" as exhibited by one or two on here and just ride it until the summer finally finishes. Then I'm going to pester yo lot all winter about all the anoraky little details (is there such a word?) More soon. Steve

My Tiger 800 doesn't have a centre stand so I bought this paddock stand during the summer.

I changed the rear brake pads today and the brake cleaner seems to have disolved the glue that holds the rubber pads onto the frame.
Those of you "in the business", what glue should I use to fix them back on (rubber/steel)

It has been a long time since we last discussed this and I think that the old "Cafe guru" stuff is a bit dated. I will rename and renumber the membergroups if you'd all like to pitch in with suggestions. At present: Newbie | | 0 posts | Member | | 10 posts | Bike Polisher | | 50 posts | Plug Changer | | 100 posts | Top End Fixer | | 250 posts | Engine Builder | | 500 posts | Ace Restorer & Cafe Guru | | 1000 posts |
Bearing in mind that Bryan has over 2500 posts, we need a new scale... How about: SOHC Lurker | | 0 posts | SOHC Newbie | | 1 post | SOHC Associate | | 50 posts | SOHC Member | | 100 posts | SOHC Pro | | 500 posts | SOHC Master | | 1000 posts | SOHC Jedi | | 2500 posts |
Also, I might reserve the name "Sponsor" for those trade sellers who are actively participating and donating to the site. Thoughts?

I have an almost new one of these from the SOHC/4 shop. I bought it to check that the new logo works (it does), but after one wash it has shrunk and I can't wear it any more.
It is (was) a Medium but would now fit someone smaller than a male medium.
Free to a good home.
Anyone got kids/grand kids/small wife ?

My good wife and I (plus Springer) are off to a cottage near Bala for a week in mid-August.
Any of you around that area?
I always make a point of hooking up with a fellow member when I move out of the Thames Valley...
Recommend a good pub and a free beer is on offer!

A couple of members have posted recently saying that PMs don't always get through.
I watch the server logs (sad, I know) and can confirm that the system works perfectly...
Some reasons why you don't get a response once you've sent a PM:
1. The recipient has changed their email address and never received the email notification (please make sure the email address in your profile is correct) 2. The recipient hasn't noticed the [1] next to the "My Messages" menu item 3. Once read, the [1] goes away (it just indicates unread messages) and it is easy to forget 4. They really don't want to talk to you...
Also, please don't "Reply to" the notification email as I get them on the admin account. The notification emails are sent from the server, not from the other party. To reply to a PM, go to "My Messages"
Don't forget that you have a "Sent Messages" folder as well as an "Inbox" so you can see what you have sent in the past.

Now that we have a sexy new server with all bells and whistles working, I have installed a couple of extra plug-ins (and more soon!).
One of them is the "Donations" plugin which you will see in the menu next to "Members".
I have never asked for donations before, but speaking to Glenn Stauffer on sohc4.net, he manages to almost completely offset his hosting costs due to the generosity of the members there.
The new host is more expensive than the last (but worth it!) - so I am respectfully asking for help from the good members of this forum.
[I will continue to run the forum whatever - but every little helps!]
Steve
