CB350/400 / Tyres
« on: December 03, 2020, 04:37:09 PM »
Having finally built the wheels and then been distracted from the workshop for a while, it's now time to sort the tyres.
First set is for the CJ250T but as wheels are the same as the 400 I'm hoping for a bit of advice / recent experience.

After many calls I've found the local KTM garage seem really helpful and are happy to fit tyres and also check over the wheels I built to make sure they are true and tensioned properly.
Happy at that as I can well remember fitting tyres many years ago and have no desire to revisit that painful struggle!

Are there any recommended tyres for these bikes - not after anything sporty (CJ250T and sporty don't really go together!!) but ideally reasonable cost and a bit classic look.
I've had a Google and have no idea what tyres are good or bad these days so any help appreciated so I can get them ordered up and over to the garage.

Cheers,
Andy

I guess it's just a lack of confidence really and I'll bet 90% of wheels are not at the right tension but don't even get considered.

As a comparison I thought I'd ping the spokes on the spare set of wheels but that just showed how bad they were as the variation in note was massive - yet I'd have happily ridden the bike without checking them if it wasn't being restored.

I've no idea who would be able to check the wheels around here - maybe I'll try the tyre places and see if that's an option.

Andy

Thanks Ash,
That's as technical as I got so far and is probably all that's needed.
All spokes sound similar and none are 'tonging'.
Having never done a wheel before I have no experience of the right sound but guess if the spokes are all tight and sound similar it's probably OK.

I often think too much these days - can't help smiling when remembering the stuff we did to our bikes back in the 80's without any thought or fear.

Andy

Got both wheels laced and trued without any real drama - happy so far.
My nervous gremlin is just wittering on in my ear that I have no idea if the spoke tension is right as these are the first wheels I've built.
Is there any way to check this myself or am I best taking the wheels to someone to do a once over for peace of mind?

Andy

Thanks Bryan,
The visible thread is on the other side, i.e. towards the hub - on the old wheel all the thread seems to be inside the nipple, although I haven't tightened anything very much yet so guess it may change then.

Just finished initial lacing up of the newly arrived DID rims and Bryan is correct, the slightly angled ones go from the outside to inside of the hub.
Having a spare original wheel for comparison was a godsend!

Starting on the fun bit of truing the wheel and having 'enjoyed' time watching a few videos on line I've got a couple of questions hopefully someone can help with...
Should the spokes be tightened up at all before starting to true the wheel?
Seems most recommend truing the radial direction first and this is done by tweaking the inner spokes only (the outside to inside ones)
For the sideways truing is this also done just with the inside spokes or does this need the outer ones also fitted?
At what stage do you tighten all the spokes to the correct tension - if after truing does this throw the wheel back out of true?
Is there any explanation of the ding test or how to know how tight to do the spokes?

Finally it looks like the new DSS spokes will have a bit of thread showing once tightened, where the original ones seemed to have all thread inside the nipples - is that correct?

Andy

Julie,
What polishing wheel do you use for this.
I have been cleaning and smoothing a couple of plastic bits and wondered if you used the sort for alloy polishing on a grinder or a car body type polisher etc?
Any advice very welcome before I start.

SOHC Singles & Twins / Re: CJ250T brake pipe
« on: October 31, 2020, 12:01:06 PM »
Thanks again
I did originally hope that the brakes would be the same as the 400 but sadly not the case.
The two hoses are both a small mount shorter than the 400 ones - by about 25 - 30mm which probably would fit but pushes the hoses 'out' of line quite a bit.

For the pipe it's hard to tell, definitely a different part number but I can't compare so easily as the CJ pipes are all damaged / cut on the old bikes.
Having a good look it might be possible to fit the 400 pipe but I need to get the front end together first to check for sure.

I think the difference may be due to the CJ having a slightly longer fork slider for some reason which shortens the hoses and changes the run of the pipe and clamp position etc.
I thought the forks were common parts until I dismantled the two bikes and found that one had shorter sliders and when I compared them to the 400 they matched up.

I'll give Legend a call and see if they can do 'special' hoses or only supply standard kits etc.

Andy

Al,
I had lots of trouble trying to find a tap for the M20 size fitting on my 400 tank - the old tap was a bit knackered and thought I'd quickly get a new one and play with restoring the original at leisure.
In the end got one from 4into1 in the US which so far seems fine - total cost was around £38 including postage and customs charges.
Still bemused that all the taps I could find are M16 yet I've got three 400 tanks all of which have the M20 size.

Thanks.
Julie - I tried Legend first as I got the 400 hoses from them recently and they look really good but sadly they don't do any for the CJ.

Bryan - I'm trying to get as original a look as possible so prefer to have the metal pipe if feasible.

I had some made up by Predator a few weeks ago but when I got them the hoses are wrong and I think the pipe is also not correct. They are not sure when they can make new ones so I was hoping to find an alternative.

Hi,
Struggling to find anyone who can do replacement brake hoses and pipe for the old CJ250T.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks guys,
Think I'll order a rubber cover and see if it can be wiggled over the trip knob without removing it as it sounds like it's risky removing it.
Have an old speedo to play with first so that should help.
Just a small tear in the cover but it will annoy me if I don't al least try and fix it!

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks Al,
I'll have a look on their site now.
Do you know hoe the knob is removed as well by chance?

No, not a reference to a bizarre retro swimming trunk ailment!

I wondered how the trip meter knob is removed on the speedo?
Also, can the rubber cover on this be replaced without opening the clocks (assuming the rubber bit is available)?

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks Bill,
Luckily I've got spare complete original wheels to compare to which will hopefully make it easier

Cheers,
Andy
