Title: Technical appreciation
Post by: K2-K6 on March 28, 2023, 12:00:30 PM
For those interested in deeper examination of mechanical parts within some engines

https://youtu.be/F39gjxxGHfY

Warning, for the impatient it may not be for you  :) slow delivery but a very lucid look at this element of engineering from Brian Garvey.

Nice one, that was really interesting, albeit a tad long winded bless him. I'm not surprised F1 motors are so expensive, just looking at the machining of that sprung gear on the end of the cam. Bit like an over engineered cush drive really but what a piece of design and execution, brilliant.

I can see that he must be a good engineer, he must be able to get those hands into the smallest of places, have you seen how much his thumb bends the wrong way when he's holding that sprocket assembly :o..............old bannana thumbs! ;D

;D I thought the same about thumb dexterity Roo.

Yes, needs to bring the speed up a little hence my warning for the impatient. Very clear in his view and explanation though.

If you read Keith Duckworth auto biography he explains how they had problems with the DFV,

I kinda got it straight away and having a visual aid meant that it was really clear. I was always pretty good at physics and maths, couldn't really see why he said folk dont understand that particular theory really, you can see the extrra travel on the crank to allow room for the swing and rotation of the con rod. Anyway, spot on, cheers 8) ;)

Now I’m stuffed, was watching him doing pneumatic-valve operation and theory last night. He’s proper clued up that chap isn’t he. Long winded but clued up.

I've got more to watch when I get time.

Something else interesting https://www.f1technical.net/news/20316 overview of how they burn really really lean fuel mix currently.

But.......https://global.honda/heritage/episodes/1972introducingthecvcc.html this principle was developed by Honda to production in the 70s just how far ahead were they  :) and interesting that they have come to the fore in F1 terms recently.

Well I have to say I didn't get it from the slider crank rig he had built.
It appeared to me that every time he turned the crank to 90 deg it looked like he turned it too far, hence I was unconvinced.
I was sure he was right and that it was simply a slight camera angle offset that made it look suspect, so being a bit anal I drew it out myself which made it blindingly obvious.
10cm con rod and 3cm crank.
Got to do the maths now just to see if I still have half a brain cell left.

Worryingly I did an engineering degree and the first year was common across all disciplines.
I can remember doing vector diagrams to dynamically balance several different weights about a rotating shaft so I may well have done all this stuff and forgotten all of it. It was 1976? ish.
If you mention this year, Roo will gleefully tell you he was aged 1. Don't ask how I know.

However what an amazing bit of engineering and mind boggling all the torsional tweaks they have to do to the camshaft to get it to work as well as they can.

The name changes as you go around the country, spotted that being an HGV driver, Bap in Yorkshire, Stottie in the North East, a Roll in the Midlands, Balm in the North West, teacake in the south, a TEACAKE FFS, a teacake has bloody currants in it.

Your ageist comments are so uncool Roo.
Like when I helped you set your 2nd contact breaker up correctly and you said I understood it because "contact breakers are more your era"
If you can't say something nice don't say anything.

PS got my bus pass today! There thats made you envious!

You have my sympathy.
I'm still doing a day a week which I do enjoy, but its got a 3.5hr round trip commute attached to it, so I leave at 07.00 and get back at about 20.00-20.30 and I am cream crackered.
Not sure how many of those I could manage now.

My license was due to be renewed on the 28th this month. I thought a fair bit about it and decided if I didn’t have a valid license they would stop asking me to work!🤣 I am now HGV negative! Feel liberated. Happy Days! (sorry Bryan) 🤣

I gave up my HGV this year as well Johnny, just couldn't justify the £100 medical, I was thanking of maybe doing a few days on the agency but they said I had to have driven within the last 6 months so I needed a refresher course. Only been driving the damn things for over 40 years so how they can think I don't know how to do it is beyond me. I did renew last year but didn't do a days work so why bother. Plus you need to renew your other licenses every year as well, I didn't do that at one point as I thought they were all valid till 70 but no, had to go on a course and they said your license has expired and I said no just the HGV but it appears not to be the case.

I have most of my teeth thank you.
I am tired because I couldn't get to sleep as I was trying to understand why the top half of the piston stroke is faster/further than the bottom 90 deg.
Fortunately I had alight bulb moment so I hope to sleep better tonight.
Have a good time fishin.

It’s stair rods here, gonna doss in the car park and get up at sparrows to have a mooch and see where they’re hiding. Then it’s fish scaring time.

I’ll bob over next week and hear the Swiss watch that is the 400 after your fiddling

What the hell Ken! Refresher Course?? Yes bit of an insult!  Medical here was going to be £180. Wasn’t a problem, employer said they would pay. But just decided this retirement game is for me. Plenty going on!

Thanks Roo! Could do with just a couple more degrees of heat sometimes, other than that it’s great.
