Whats the recommendations for replacement batteries....... Lets assume that money is not the deciding factor, and were after performance and longevity......... The battery will be in a cold garage over winter, on the bike with an optimiser permanently fitted. The optimiser is rated for all types of battery......... Should I go for Lead Acid, Glass Mat, Gel, or Lithium?

Glass mat. Motobatt. Not that I have much experience, but this hasn't let me down.

I've used Varta AGM for my vehicles recently.
We've got a VW diesel which ran with the original as above for 119,000miles in eleven years and never ever needed battery attention. Never really thought about buying that brand or type before until that one.
So on that basis, I bought one for my 750 and so far (just over a year) it's been better than anything else I've had. Even stood outside under a cover for three months with no attention at all and no problems. It just seems to hold charge and start with ease.
Not particularly special in spec and cost £45 delivered via amazon.

Do not use acid if you value your exhaust system

Do not use acid if you value your exhaust system
I got a Motobatt last may,and it works great,I have an Oxford optimiser,
but previously it got corrosion on the inner RH silencer

I would not recommend Motobatt. I bought one for my Vmax and it was dead after 1 year and just out of warranty. I now have an Odyssey as per my previous Max. Not cheap but fantastic batteries.

I would recommend Motobatt. I've had one in my 500 for the last three years, during which it has done less than 100 miles. I don't use an Optimate, just charge it once per month or so.
This would have killed the old lead acid batteries in no time.

The 350F had a standard lead/acid battery that has been on an Oxford optimiser most of the time and it has failed at 13 months old. Red light was on the optimiser and the voltage was down to 9.7V. Tried a recharge that put it back to 12.9V but in the time it took to put it back on the bike it lost its charge again.
What about a Lithium battery? Are they safe to use since laptops and Dreamliners appear to catch fire. ;D

Tempted to answer on this one too.
Varta accues in my BMW for years.Lately in the Fireblade too.
Tried an Odyssey this autumn, after a month only 11.7 volts!
Cost 3 or 4 times the Varta accu! The ad said it would take extreme abuse which indeed I did not give it.
But it was dated August '15 so maybe something has happened to it before I got it this summer?
Dealer would send it back and tell me. But I've had no reply now 2 month later.

Thanks for all the input. I have decided to go with a JMT YB12A-A Gel battery from M&P at a cost of £39.95p.
Got to be better than the standard lead/acid battery. Whilst I was doing the carbs on the 350F the battery decided instant death was the way forward. Never seen a battery go that quick ever.

Think that's a good price/quality compromise. Bike batteries all seem to suffer from some degree of variable quality. Presume that it's the clearances between plates and the demands of electric starters and intermittent use. Many chargers can also play there part. I've had old (not sealed) car batteries last 13 years, but never a bike beyond 5 years.

Waiting for Mick to express his reservations about MotoBatt... but I have two of them. Oldest is now 3.5yrs in the 400 and I never touch them, not even disconnecting in winter.
Last May I bought one for the VFR when the battery the PO installed new (an LP one) completely failed after 3yrs. One (or more) cells shorting and in that case even the ignition won't work after a bump start. Again, so far so good so I only have good things to say about them.
The best thing is the massive CCA, though probably all AGM (or decent modern battery) is the same.

I have used a Motobatt in project 400 and considering the amount of cranking its been asked to do on a new engine its been great. It keeps a really strong charge as well. But, if money was no object I would have bought an Odyssey, I have used one of these in my Jota for 5 years now and it has never let me down despite sitting for months on end sometimes without a charge, well worth the extra money.
