Other Bikes / Re: BMW R80

Hi Dave,
I've had an R65 many years ago and an R100 RT Classic more recently. Engines are virtually bomb-proof - if servicing has not been skimped.  Depending on the year, gearboxes can be troublesome. Not sure of change points but early bikes had a circlip holding a bearing in place.  BM accountants decided it wasn't necessary as the bearing couldn't come off the shaft!  True, BUT it could move and cause bearing failure.  Saved them a few pence on each bike. Many replaced under warranty, so the circlip was refitted and the groove re-introduced.  My 95 R100 had the groove - a friends 88 R80 didn't.  I made a rig for the lathe to re-machine the groove in the hardened shaft with a thin grinding disc in the dremel.  All gearboxes can suffer from gearchange spring failure which leaves you in whichever gear you were in when it failed.  A few special tools needed to strip the box and the casing has to be heated to get everything out.  I made the tools and gave them to the mate with the R80 but could beg them back if you needed them.

It's so frustrating Ted, I've asked yet again today if they can confirm which speedo cable type I need for a cb550, the reply avoided answering the question.  I'm fairly certain I know having taken mine off but confirmation would be great so it's over to Roo to answer it for me.

Could I suggest something I do,

Take the bike for a run   about 15 to 20 miles  get it nice and warm
When home, keep the engine running, put on centre stand

Get your long screw driver

Now ,turn one airscrew a quarter turn out,
Check what happens, blip the throttle, OK?

If it struggles, turn to previous settings

But if its OK,do another, repeat, and check

Remember, Modern fuel is different than 50years ago,

It might like a leaner tickover

Good point John, most folk overtighten canister oil filter by hand often needing a chain grip tool to remove them.

I try to use the lower torque reading given or just by feel as the O ring becomes compressed.

Unfortunately I haven't been riding like in the past: looooong stretches >130km/h uninterupted on motorways. It was always great how well the engine responded afterwards.

My understanding of spark plug technology  is they are designed to be  self cleaning at higher revs/temperatures - obviously there is a limit to this function so if the mixture is overly rich right through the range they will soot up.

I suspect throttle blipping was something we used to do to keep the plugs from sooting up at idle to make a clean getaway.

My experience primarily with cars using carbs is that a vehicle used for mostly short journey work fitted with the manufacturers standard plugs would foul up badly needing a good run to clear the carbon deposits.

I particularly remember a disabled customer who ran an Automatic Opel Commodore 2.5 GS (1974) from his home to work a  distance of less than a mile. On collecting his Opel from Ashbourne it would not exceeed 45-50 mph flat out. During the course of the journey to our service department  in Burton the top speed would slowly improve until it would reach 60-65 mph. After a service the car would drive like it should for a 2.5 litre straight six.

Fitting a different plug type to cope with the short journey used mostly on auto choke was not an option as the customer would drive to Scotland a few times a year where he had family. In reality he wouid have been better driving a car with a much smaller engine.

Can I suggest when you fit the replacement, make sure you don't over tighten it,
