Humour / Re: Valuable lessons to our minors

I use to drive the plant students crazy when they came asking fo a 10mm bolt and thats exactly what i gave them, then told them to go away and sort out exactly what they wanted!

Hahahaha years ago when I was a skint Toolmaker I got a second job in a local backstreet garage, I had exactly the same problems with the mechanics, I asked for a 10mm bolt, they gave me an M6. Confused the hell out of them when trying to explain. 😂😂

I was given this bike in boxes, reportedly raced in South Africa, it was rolling chassis and engine stripped to component parts, no bodywork. I built it for Sprinting and later built up a 350 engine. All this was done over 20 years ago.

My 21 year son Sam has passed all the bike tests so can now ride unlimited capacity (don’t get me started about how ridiculous having to take the same tests twice is) Sam was born after I built this bike, he asked if he could get it out and running again to have a ride, he’s hooked, he has modern bikes, race bikes, but loved the raw feel, said it felt like he was doing 100mph at 30mph 😂

First off thank you for the help with this little CM125.

Little update. After fibreglassing the mudguards that quite frankly should have gone in the bin, and brushing on some silver paint (it’s a winter runabout costing, including initial purchase price, £135 so far) we had it assembled and ready to run, we had a bit of trouble getting it to run on two cylinders, the coil checked out at the correct 5ohms but I swapped it out anyway, all I had was a CBR600 coil at 3ohms and instant two cylinders and instant starting. So new coil needed.

A few more jobs will have it ready for pottering about on slippery winter roads, exhaust stud to repair, a working horn, plus a few other bits.

On another note, the little CM125 was 40 years old last month, on GOV. UK website it’s showing as not needing MOT but as we haven’t got to April yet still have to pay road tax, I tried to tax it at the Post Office but was refused as no MOT. My girlfriend phoned DVLA who said it doesn’t need an MOT, she was working in the next town so tried in their Post Office who happily taxed it. Just shows that however helpful our local Post Office staff usually are, mistakes are made.

I’ve just repaired a pair of silencers in very similar condition, I gave them back saying they’re done and will get you away but look for new ones as they won’t last.

Next job, we were short of an exhaust collet so I’ve made one up quickly from a bit of old pipe.

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but the photos will not load

Anyway, a really successful day, most of the wiring done thanks to great help here, thanks chaps. Really needed that diagram to help sort out the clutch switch /neutral light and diode wiring for the starter solenoid. All lights working apart from back light which is yet to go on with rear mudguard, indicators working, we have a spark at the plugs.

The coil is after market fitted by PO and the spark is weak with the correct spec’ resistor plugs, tried an old none resistor plug of mine and get a much better spark so not sure what’s going on. I may simply use none resistor plugs if that works ok, any thoughts on that welcome.

Brilliant, thanks fellas!!

All info is helpful. Andy, the images are as you say, a bit too blurry to make out on here, if you could email the images that would be great. I’ll PM you my email address

I should take some photos as we all love a photo of a bike build don’t we 😊

Thanks Bryan. Local Honda Dealer? None round here really, nearest one is probably an hour or two away, and found them very dismissive of the old bikes when I once visited.

I was hoping to find an online diagram. I can find every old Honda except the CM125. Old man Honda has a good selection of earlier wiring diagrams but alas not the CM125. We have a manual for Chinese 125s with a diagram that is very near which helps. I can work through the wiring to suss it out, just thought the obvious thing to do was ask. Thanks again.

Thanks Johnny, yeah sometimes they are so far gone that they just can not be restored. Shame really, it will live again but the finish will be “curbside” 😂

It was so bad the tank was rotted through completely, luckily the Chinese had faithfully copied the CM style when producing the Huoniao HN125 and we were able to pick up a good tank for £20 that’s a perfect match and fit.

Good luck with your QT50

Hi folks. My girlfriend is doing up (I won’t say restoring) a 1982 Honda CM125, she picked it up in a horrendous condition after being stored in a leaking shed for decades, although it will live again it’s condition was that not much could be restored to original. She is bringing it back to life to be used as a winter runabout.

The frame is solid but badly pitted and now hand painted, wheels the same. I hotwired a dead loss ignition and got the engine running after unfreezing it, compression is good.

After some comments about scrapping better bikes than my 500/4 (as well as much encouragement 😊) I can just Imagine some of you recoiling in horror 😂

We are now at the wiring stage, I have repaired PO’s wiring bodges to switch gear but need a wiring diagram and wondered if anyone can point to one.

TIA Tom
